2 Calling all men ACTS Retreat Comes to St. Philip ACTS Retreat will be held for the men of St. Philip over the weekend of September 12, hosted by our brothers in Denton as a mission to initiate the ACTS ministry at St. Philip the Apostle. The retreat starts on Thursday, September 9 and runs through Sunday, September 12. The retreat will be held at Lake Sharon Christian Center, Corinth TX. There are only 40 slots available so if you missed signing up last weekend, be sure to get your act together and check it out! Come and see. PoC: Director Tom Bonfield, tjbonfield@verizon.net Or Greg Walterscheid gwalterscheid@conleygroup.com ACTS ACTS. What is it? Acts of Congress? Professional stage Acting? No. It is a religious retreat that will enrich your awareness of God in your daily life. Read more about ACTS and how it started at Our Lady of Perpetual Help outside of San Antonio, TX at PoC: Bob Dubek, family_of_7@msn.com JUDGE NOT I was shocked, confused, bewildered As I entered Heaven's door, Not by the beauty of it all, Nor the lights or its decor. But it was the folks in Heaven Who made me sputter and gasp-- The thieves, the liars, the sinners, The alcoholics and the trash. There stood the kid from seventh grade, Who swiped my lunch money twice. Next to him was my old neighbor, Who never said anything nice. Herb, who I always thought Was rotting away in hell, Was sitting pretty on cloud nine, Looking incredibly well. I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal? I would love to hear Your take. How'd all these sinners get up here? There must be some mistake. 'And why's everyone so quiet, So somber - give me a clue.' 'Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock. No one thought they'd be seeing you.' The Date for Submitting Any Item for Publication in September's newsletter is a bit earlier than usual, Monday 8/23. Please help the editor to make YOUR newsletter worthy to report YOUR Council's charity work. Send in your activity reports, plans and updates. Whatever! Remember, just going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in your garage makes you a car. Every saint has a PAST. Every sinner has a FUTURE! Let ACTS help light the way to YOUR future.

5 The Respect for Life Corner This month, I ll recap the past six months and project our direction for the next six. In addition to the 1 st Saturday Rosary in the Mary Garden, we have also had enough support to participate in six prayer vigils at Dallas abortion clinics. At each visit we have had the joyful experience of learning that 1 or more young women have decided not to go through with their planned abortions. To be clear, our group does not talk to or counsel the women; there are trained counselors present for that purpose. We are there to support the counselors in praying the rosary and other prayers. But it is always gratifying to hear that our prayers are having some effect. So thank you to our Saturday morning and Wednesday vigil Prayer Warriors ; your efforts are fruitful. Due to scheduling, our next vigil will move from the 1 st Wed of Aug to the 2 nd Wed, Aug 11. Since we will be more flexible with scheduling now, we will not always meet on the 1 st Wed. For this reason, I ll ask that if you think you may want to stay informed of our vigils, send me an and I ll put you on our addressee list. Being on the list in no way commits you to joining us, but it does show us your support and if someday you are able to join us for even one visit, you will know the particulars; even if you cannot join us, you can join us in prayer no matter where you are In July, we expanded our ministry with a second monthly event by visiting the Loreto House in Denton (which happens to be one of the charities to which St Philip s tithes!!) They provide pregnancy counseling and have the most high-tech 4D sonogram equipment in TX, which was purchased with a matching grant from the KofC. This equipment is so sensitive it can detect a 4-week-old baby s heartbeat and once a woman sees that, 90% change their mind about having an abortion. They also have a thrift store to support the center. The center and the thrift store are looking for volunteers to help the project. Loreto house was started 2 years ago by Randy & Laurie Bollig, St Mark s parishioners, and still not self-supporting. This is a golden opportunity to put your faith into action and we will continue our support. To read about this amazing effort, see: They are located in the Carriage Shopping Center, just off the McCormick exit, I- 35E in Denton. Read more about them in this newsletter. Look for our fund-raising support for the Loreto House at an upcoming Sunday morning pancake breakfast. Your Brother Knight in Christ, John Bowen, , jbowen76@verizon.net. Loreto House Loreto House is a Catholic Life Center and a Sanctuary of Hope for any woman, of any faith, who is dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Loreto House is a Sanctuary of Hope for families who have questions about end of life issues and the ethical care of the infirmed, sick, or dying. Loreto House does not provide physical shelter at this time, however will refer as best as able. Loreto House services are offered without regard to race, faith, or marital status and our services are not contingent upon you converting", or taking spiritual training. Loreto House is openly Catholic but does not force faith on any person whom God brings to us. Loreto House is totally dependent upon revenue from Holy Family Thrift Store and benefactors like you, for our support. Loreto House can help the terminally ill Yes, a very important part of our apostolate is counseling in End of Life issues. Volunteers will assist you and your family with information, prayer, and referrals. Provided free of charge are documents from the Catholic Bio ethics Center on a variety of subjects including: Suffering and Compassion, Organ Donation and Brain Death, Advance Medical Directives, Euthanasia and Physician Assisted Suicide, Nutrition and Hydration for the Persistent Vegetative State, and Bio ethics. If a woman you know thinks they are pregnant, call our 24 Hour Help Line and we will arrange a free pregnancy test as well as our other services. Loreto House volunteers are ready to listen Support is tax deductible Loreto House is a qualified 501 (c) (3) charity, and your donation is deductible to the full extent allowed by the IRS. Loreto House is not a medical clinic. Volunteers are not licensed physicians and do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Only referrals are provided for those needs. PoC: John Bowen, , jbowen76@verizon.net.

6 Get Security! Don t wait. Act today! When your family is hungry, you see that this need is taken care of quickly. You don t put it off until tomorrow. You act immediately to the best of your ability. As a provider to your wife and children, your responsibilities are great and your time is spread thin. It is easy to forget important tasks or let them slip to the backburner for later. Everything, including your health, can change in the blink of an eye. Don t put off today what can t wait until tomorrow. As your professional Knights of Columbus agent, I urge you to make securing life insurance for you and your family a top priority. It is my fraternal obligation to make sure that every member has the opportunity to protect his family with the Order s top-rated insurance products. I ll work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is what they need the most. Your Knights of Columbus insurance program is second to none. As the premier safety net for Catholic families for more than 128 years, our insurance program makes me proud. But I m also concerned that too many of our brother Knights have not yet looked into the needs of their family. I suspect that, for many of them, life insurance has drifted to the backburner until tomorrow. Do not be one of them; move your insurance needs to the forefront today. I m Kevin Pfister. Call or kevin.pfister@kofc.org. Let s talk. Pray Your Holy Rosary Daily. Brother Boyd Burris attended the 42 nd annual Knights of Columbus International Golf Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana June Boyd had to withdraw from the tournament due to a back injury but Texas was well represented. Byron Richard from Vidor won $65 in the scramble and Don Sheehan from Houston won first place net score in his flight. This is the first time in 10 years that someone from Council 9884 has come home empty. David Slavik won his flight in Texas, Arizona and South Carolina. Carl Montagna won his flight in South Carolina and Boyd has won his flight in Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Florida. Next year the tournament will be in Lafayette, Louisiana June Any Knight who is in good standing and their Council is not under suspension can participate. Players are placed in groups of twelve according to handicap and the handicaps range from 7 to 62. Cash prizes are awarded to teams from the scramble to closest to the pin. All that is required is three scorecards from rounds before the current tournament and must be witnessed and signed by a PGA professional. There is a one-day ladies tournament and tours and activities for those ladies who don t play golf. Start making plans for next year and share in the fraternity with Brothers from all of the lower 48 States and Canada. Contact Boyd Burris for hotel details in Lafayette. burrisbp@verizon.net, (home) , (cell)
