1 November looks like an extremely busy month for Council First of all don t forget about daylight savings time and adjust your clocks accordingly on November 2nd. It is a true blessing to live in a nation where we decide who our elected leaders will be and it is up to us to re-elect them if we are satisfied with the way they represent us or remove them by voting them out if otherwise. We live in the greatest nation on God s green earth, so let s keep it that way and don t forget to vote on Tuesday November 4th. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, World War I ended. President Woodrow Wilson established Armistice Day for November 11th in Armistice Day became Veterans Day in 1954 to honor all veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Knights of Columbus Council 9884 is blessed and honored to have many veterans as members. Veterans are special; they seem to walk prouder and speak more confidently than the rest of us. You ll know who they are; check out the room next time we say the Pledge of Allegiance at one of our meetings. It s because of the sacrifice of veterans that we are able to vote and enjoy the freedoms we have. Fly your flag proudly on November 11th and if you know any veterans shake their hand and thank them for their service to our country. Thanksgiving Day will be here before we know it. Family gatherings, turkey, dressing, potatoes, football, more turkey, I m getting hungry already. I would like to share this prayer with you and your families. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day with all your loved ones at your side. Thanksgiving Dinner Prayer Heavenly Father, on Thanksgiving Day, We bow our hearts to You and pray. We give You thanks for all You ve done, Especially for the gift of Jesus, Your Son. For beauty in nature, Your glory we see, For joy and health, friends and family, For daily provision, Your mercy and care, These are the blessings You graciously share. So today we offer this response of praise, With a promise to follow You all of our days. -Mary Fairchild Eddie Martinez, Grand Knight For More on the History of Veterans Day: The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words: Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. 2 Knight of the Day Our Knight of the month is the youngest of three, has a brother and sister who live in Chicago. His Dad is still alive at 91! His first job was washing dishes at the Resurrection Hospital in Chicago where his mom worked as a neonatal nurse. He also worked at a steak restaurant where the best part was test tasting the steak in the morning to make sure they were safe for consumption by the customers. Our Knight s ultimate favorite band is Led Zeppelin. His wife is impressed by how much he knows about the 60 s and 70 s music, artists and bands. As a young man he enjoyed watching concerts. He also enjoys sports. His favorite baseball team is the Chicago White Sox, and his favorite football team is, you guessed it, Da Bears!!. He has a collection of R & R LPs from the 60s & 70s and a nice collection of baseball cards. He also wrote poems. He came to Texas in 1985 with the company he worked for, GTE which is now Verizon. He is a Certified Public Accountant with another company still today. In 1987 he met his wife at a wedding reception of a fellow worker. He spent quality time with their two sons when they were young coaching them in baseball and flag football, going with them for trick or treat on Halloween, and cheering them on when they run Cross Country in high school. He always made sure everyone was home to sit down for dinner. He was active in their Boy Scouting life, traveling and camping with them and was actively involved in Brad s getting his Eagle Scout rank with a lot of support from the troop leaders especially Tom Moore. Even now that they are away from home he keeps in touch with them almost daily, checking on how they re doing with their studies and keeping track of their expenses. He shows them the value of money and how to manage it right. The sons appreciate this lesson from their dad. His wife loves that he is a great Christian husband, father, and a thoughtful son to his 91 year old father. He s smart and understanding of her mood swings, enjoys what she cooks for him. even if it s not that good. He makes her laugh often, he has conservative values, family oriented, and excellent financial planner. She knows in her heart that their happy marriage and family life is God s plan for them. She feels so blessed and very proud to be his wife. Our man became a Knight in 1993 gaining his major degrees and Fourth Degree in He has always been active around the church with being very involved in the Pro Life ministry and serves as much as he can with ACTS Ministry. Currently this Knight is our Culture of Life Director. Please help me congratulate our Knight of the Month, Tom Mazur! Family of the Month Our Sir Knight was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in He obtained a degree in marketing from one of our many Catholic Universities, Seton Hall. He relocated to Atlanta to work for a large textile company. On one of his trips back to New Jersey City he met, fell in love with Martha. They married in One year later they welcomed their son, Frank, Jr., of course! Two years later they were blessed with a little girl whom they named Christina. Currently, Frank Jr. resides in New Jersey and Christina lives in Coppell. Frank and Martha are now called grandpa and grandma. His job required frequent traveling to Dallas. This meant a lot of time away from his family. So a move to Dallas was planned and in 1976, they moved to Bartonville, TX. While in Bartonville, he decided to branch out and become a manufacturer s representative himself and work out of his residence. As his business expanded he was representing 10 major suppliers of textile products. Within a short period of time he outgrew his two car garage office. So he decided to build another free standing two story house for his business and a "in-laws house". Frank was very active one the political arena of Bartonville. He was instrumental in assisting in the construction of the current Bartonville City Hall. Retirement beckoned to him, and in 2003 he officially stepped down. Now, eleven years later Martha and Frank have decided to downsize into a home in Lewisville, TX. Frank has the distinction of being one of the thirteen remaining Charter Members of Council He has been active as a dealer in our casino nights and makes it to the Council business meetings. We wish to present to Frank and Martha Fehrenbach with the Knight Family of September 2014 award. Poc: Gary Marco, Family Activity Director 2

4 NEW FUNDRAISING ACTIVITY REPORT Wow bottom line up front: Council 9884 is set to receive approximately $660 from the Flower Mound Fish City Grill First Tuesday Charity Event. As we ve been publicizing, Flower Mound Fish City Grill, a dinner gift certificate sponsor of our last St. Philip Casino Night opened up their first Tuesday event to us on October 7 th. 15% of all proceeds on October 7 th were set aside for KoC charity work. Well, Sandy and I personally got there right when they opened at 11am, Dave Worden and his wife joined about a dozen other patrons shortly thereafter, followed by the Jacob party and the Polasek party. Samantha left me a phone message saying there was a good stream of folks all day long. Thank you to all who participated and/or told their friends. When I called Samantha back, she didn t give me the dollar amount we raised right away, but she wanted to invite us back! I asked how well we did, she gave me the estimate. Then I asked how well we did compared to other groups. I m not allowed to say, but I did call you first to kick off our new year, and I didn t call anyone else while I waited for your call back. So we re back on for Tuesday January 6 th. Mark it on your calendar, save some Christmas gift money or take your wife out after all of the work she does over the holidays to a great relaxing dinner. We ll continue our previous reminder notices in December and January s newsletters. PoC: Bob Dubek, Past Worthy Treasurer Hello Fellow Knights. Here we are less than 2 months until Christmas. When Christmas arrives we should be in full swing in our preparation for the Art Auction. Be ready to get a call to help with that in some way. We will need help before and during the event. The Women s Club has their Italian Dinner coming up and we Knights have a number of things going on in November. The CheerFest will be over by the time you read this but it continues to be a strong supporter of the Knights. Good income for a small amount of work. We also had the day at Fish City Grill. Many of us eat out at least once a week. That is a great place and going back in Jan. should allow many who did not get a chance to go in Oct. to get over and help us out. Fish City was Happy so we should not let them down. The DJ Service is up and going well, playing its first gig and the crowd was very happy with all the serves. Next we will be entertaining guests at the wedding of Megan Rohr daughter of Knight Troy Rohr. It should also be a fun time. We still don t have a name for our newly arranged DJ Service. Your brother in Christ Dan Jacobs Deputy Grand Knight A provision of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act changes federal law to allow U.S. veterans and military personnel not in uniform to render the military hand-salute when the national anthem is played. The new law took effect on October 14, This change adds to a provision which was passed in the 2008 Defense Bill, which authorized veterans and military personnel in civilian close to render the military salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag. In a press release, Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary Dr. James B. Peake said, This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation s flag Traditionally, veterans service organizations rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization s headgear, although this wasn't actually spelled out in federal law dealing with respect to the flag. As with all other Americans, the etiquette is to place the right hand over the heart. 4

5 IN GRAPEVINE On Sunday October 6th we had 54 people (including: 8 youths; 20 women) from the St. Philip Pro Life community, including several Knights from Council 9884*, showed their support for the Culture of Life. We held signs such as Abortion Hurts Women and Pray to end abortion on both sides of Main Street outside St. Philip. Fellow Knight Jeremy Stephens was the point person for the event and did all the heavy lifting (Thank You!). This is a nationwide event held every October. Some photos of Knights are on the next page. All Knights should obtain their A.C.E. wings as we are a Pro Life organization. The following link has all the information you need on how to gain your wings: Upcoming events that will help earn your ACE. wings are the first Saturday Rosary for Life in the St. Philip Mary Garden (8:30 A.M. every month), the March for Life in January (details can be found online) and a screening of the movie Bloodmoney (To be determined, I will send when time and place are confirmed). *Knights in attendance: David Jones, Vince Zawlocki, Dennis Bozimowski, Dan Jacobs, Louis Hernandez, Walter Johansen, Art Carrera, Bill Miller, Gary Marco, Jeremy Stephens and Tom Mazur.
