1 September 2018 Tabernacle Times Praising God C Growing Disciples C Serving The World DEATH BY IPHONE SYNDROME September approaches and we are preparing for Apple season. The world is waiting breathlessly this month for the announcement of the latest iphone. Turns out there may be several announcements not simply the next replacement for the iphone X, but two other phones, not to mention a new Apple watch. It will be a big day for tech-geeks. Few things have transformed our world more than the smartphone. And not simply by what it has created, but by what it has ended. Let s call it the death by iphone syndrome. Think of the things that the iphone has killed. Okay maybe not completely killed, but dramatically removed from the cultural scene. For example, think of all things maps: as in world atlases, guide books, globes and the old foldable paper maps of cities and states. They re no longer needed, thanks to Google Maps. Think about point-and-shoot cameras. Now used only in the domain of dedicated photographers. Or, how about hand-held game consoles and mp3 players (even Apple s own ipod). All of it is now completely unnecessary, if not irrelevant. So was there any hope for mapmakers? Of course. If they were smart, they led the way for map apps. If they didn t, they kept their store and sold paper maps until they finally went out of business. There is a huge lesson here for the church, and knowing what business we are in. Really in. As James Emery White wrote in Rethinking the Church, in the late 1800s, no business matched the financial and political dominance of the railroad. Trains dominated the transportation industry of the United States, moving both people and goods throughout the country. Then a new discovery came along the car and incredibly, the leaders of the railroad industry did not take advantage of their unique position to participate in this transportation development. The automotive revolution was happening all around them, and they did not use their industry dominance to take hold of the opportunity. In his video, The Search for Excellence, Tom Peters points out the reason: the railroad barons didn t understand what business they were in. Peters observes that they thought they were in the train business. But, they were in fact in the transportation business. Time passed them by, as did opportunity. They couldn t see what their real purpose was. One of the most foundational lessons for churches in a fast-moving, ever-changing world is to remind ourselves what business we are actually in. So, here goes.. We at TUMC are not in the Sunday school business. We at TUMC are not in the traditional (or contemporary) music business. We at TUMC are not in the door-to-door visitation business. We at TUMC are not in the well, plug in whatever method or program you like. We at TUMC are in the worship business. We are in the discipleship business. We are in the community business. We are in the mission business. MOST OF ALL, we are in the loving God and loving others in Jesus name business. And as our world changes, and programs & methods must necessarily change with them, it s good to be reminded and to remember what business we really are in. Grace and Peace, Pastor John

3 Mark your calendar September 23 at 4:00pm Why does Tabernacle need a Safe Sanctuaries Policy? AND Why should I learn more about it? But Jesus called for them and said, Let the children come, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. ~Luke 18:16 Joy Melton sets forth the United Methodist Church s guidelines for their safe sanctuary policies. She has asked and answered key questions in her recommendations guiding Tabernacle s approach to our Safe Sanctuaries Policy. Tabernacle has in place a plan to prevent child abuse because we are a community of faith-a safe haven and sanctuary-where children and youth can be confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal and the development of spiritual resources that they need to face suffering and evil. I invite everyone in the congregation to attend Safe Sanctuary Training September 23rd at 4pm in the Fellowship Hall. While this training is required for EVERYONE that interacts with children and youth it is informative for members at large to understand how our screening and training reduces the risk of abuse, reduces the risk of the church being accused of negligent hiring practices and reduces the risk of false allegations being brought against workers. Source: Melton, Joy Thornburg. Safe Sanctuaries: Reducing the Risk of Abuse in the Church for Children and Youth; Discipleship Resources, ATTENTION College STUDENTS (& PARENTS) We would like to send Care Packages and cards to the college students this year, so please send updated addresses, phone numbers and s to the Church Office as soon as possible tabernacle@tabernacle-umc.org Please or call the Church Office and give us this infor - mation so we may continue to be a part of their lives as they begin this next chapter in their academic careers.

This discipleship program is called Confirmation. Classes are taught by our Pastor. Following Confirmation, those who desire may make a profession of faith (if they have nt already) and formally join our church. We will meet ~12 times over the next 9 months. Some of the topics we ll look at include Basic Christian Beliefs, Taking a Good-Book Look, The Life of Jesus, Mission & Service and much more. We ll have several lock-ins, a retreat, and a whole lot of fun! All interested parents and youth are invited to a brief Information Session on Tuesday, September 4th at the Church at 7:00. At 5th Quarter, we provide free pizza, sodas, music and a bonfire as a place for students to get together and hang out after a game. Along with parental presence, there is always a need for more adults to be present, to fellowship with the students and support the parents present. We hope you will choose to come and help us show love to these students and families in our community.

6 For three years now, I have been excited and impressed with all the new faces at the ALIVE Service. People whom I had never seen before, are now friends, friends in Christ. They are people who have been drawn to our church by the Christian love and friendship that they have found. I watch the attendance grow and wonder how we will accommodate the growing number of worshipers. Now the way is clear: Tabernacle United Methodist Church is becoming a focal point in our community. The need is established, and by working and building together, we will have a new Christian Life Center that will allow us to continue to accommodate those people whom God is sending, people who will come to know our Savior! Please help assure that the people of our community have this opportunity to know Christ with your continued support of our CLC Building Project. ~Steve Swain, Hospitality Chair What do this picture and our Adult Choirs have in common? There s room for MORE!!! That s right, there is room for YOU! ALL ARE WELCOME to join our Adult Choir at any time, and don t forget about the Handbell Choir Join any time, no experience necessary! 7 Church Under the Bridge is a worship service and outreach for the Greensboro community that serves a meal, music and message to those in attendance. Most who come to this service are homeless or in low income housing. This is a great opportunity to serve our community as the hands and feet of Christ. Our next CUTB Service is Saturday, September 8! If you would like to participate, please meet us at the TUMC Fellowship Hall on the 8th at 4:45pm to help load sound equipment and the dinner supplies. You are welcome to ride with us in the bus if you need transportation. We will head to 300 Spring Garden St., Greensboro, to set up and get ready to serve the food. The service is over by 7:00pm and we will be back at the church by 7:30pm. We hope you will consider joining us, as we need folks along to help with set-up and to minister and serve food. However, if you cannot go with us, you can help by sending your support in the form of Hygiene Kits, described below, or by making baked goods, or purchasing bottled water for this outreach. Each Hygiene Kit should contain: 1 bottle of water, 1 hand towel, 1 washcloth 1 comb, 1 metal nail file or clippers 1 deodorant, 1 toothbrush, 1 toothpaste 1 bath-size bar soap, all packed into a 1-gallon Ziploc bag Food Lion usually has a 24-pack of bottled water on sale 2/$5, in their store brand. 10 Join the CIRCLE OF 10 Club! We have so many new people visiting our church every Sunday that it s easy to forget that being a friendly congregation means intentionally introducing yourself to those around you. The Circle of 10 Club is simply a commitment to greet every person sitting within 10 feet of you in the sanctuary on Sundays.

11 TUMC Trustees Mid-Year Report The Trustees of Tabernacle make every effort to keep our facilities as up to date as possible. This is one of the things that makes our church appealing to our congregation, visitors, and prospective members. In the past three years we have concentrated on the interior of our facilities with great success! This year we are spending a greater amount of time on the outer appearance of the facilities. Things we have accomplished or are in progress for this year: New center handrails have been installed on the front of the sanctuary. These new handrails give safe direct access to the front door without having to go around the columns. A new 12 x 15 foot carpet has been ordered for the narthex. It will replace the existing carpet which has served its purpose well but is now worn out. The new carpet should be delivered the week of August 20th. We are in the process of renovating the basement restrooms. After 21 years they were in dire need of new paint, new mirrors, and new sink and counter tops. The partitions have been removed and privacy locks have been installed on the doors. These should be complete no later than the end of September. Landscaping work around the sanctuary continues in progress. Granite edging will be installed between the sidewalks and the planting area the first week of September. This will insure that the mulch stays in the plant beds and not on the sidewalks. It should greatly improve the appearance of the grounds. A new air conditioner was required for the chapel. That unit was installed the week of August 20th. One of the units failed. Two units are required to cool the chapel. None of the above improvements could happen without your help. Although the trustees are well within our budget, cash flow at Tabernacle is down due to the summer months. If you feel moved to financially assist in the completion of any of the items above, it would be greatly appreciated. David Helms, TUMC Trustees Chair We Need more CDL PASSENGER (Class C) DRIVERS! Do you have your Class C CDL? Are you willing to get your Class C CDL? to drive the Big Bus on a trip for one of our ministries? Our Children, Youth, and Adult Fellowship all have outings during the year that require the Big Bus. Tabernacle currently has a few awesome, dedicated drivers, that we don't want to burn out or take advantage of. If you are willing to become a Tabernacle Driver, please let us know by contacting Youth Minister Savanah Aldridge at saldridge@tabernacle-umc.org. Our ministry greatly values your time, energy and support; thank you!!! Tabernacle United Methodist Church
