1 TABERNACLE U.M.C. Tabernacle United Methodist Church 5721 Methodist Road Greensboro, NC Telephone: (336) April 2016 OUT OF THE WOODS Avoiding Shark Attacks They advertised a special on flying sharks. And the TV channel didn't disappoint the people who tuned in. It showed an island just off the coast of South Africa where great white sharks jump as much as 15 feet in the air for their prey - and seals are their meal du jour. The area around this island is called the Ring of Death...and a whole lot of seals would agree. No one knows exactly why the sharks there get airborne as they do. It's apparently the only place on earth where they behave like this. But the TV special showed real footage of a shark suddenly coming up underneath an unsuspecting seal, grabbing it in his jaws, and soaring into the air with his catch. Over time, the seals learned something about these jumping jaws. These sharks seldom attack when the seals are traveling together. So they tend to stay in groups of seven or eight. But occasionally a stubborn seal will just go off on his own. And the scientists say when a seal goes off by itself, he is just asking to be shark food. There's a powerful lesson to be learned from those seals who live in the Ring of Death. If you want to avoid being your enemy's prey...stay with the pack! 1 Peter 5:8 says that you and I have an enemy - the devil - who is looking for someone to devour. And I'm convinced that he operates much like those sharks - he looks for someone who's off on his or her own - and pounces on them. You're a lot less vulnerable as long as you're sticking close to your spiritual brothers and sisters, to your church family. The problem is that right now maybe you're allowing yourself to be isolated, distant and even cut off from people who love you and people you love. The shark loves that. The first followers of Christ were living in a ring of death in Jerusalem after Jesus' death, resurrection, and return to heaven. But they knew one of the great secrets of safety and strength. In Acts 2, beginning with verse 42 - the Bible says, They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer...all the believers were together and had everything in common... Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. O.K., what's the key word here? Say it with me...they stayed together, and it was very difficult for any predator to get them. The question is - have you allowed some walls, some distance, some resistance to come between you and the people you've been close to? Family? Friends? Church family? Maybe you've been wounded...maybe there's been misunderstanding, poor communication, careless words, a lot of frustration...or you didn't get your way. Maybe you're just hurting or struggling and you don't want people to see you like this. For whatever reason, if we re not careful you'll become like one of those seals, away from the encouraging protection and love of your spiritual brothers and sisters. Alone. There s another name for that: shark bait. Out there by yourself, Satan can get you to believe all kinds of lies, fall for all kinds of temptations, and do all kinds of things you thought you'd never do. In the end, it can be as disastrous as a seal swimming alone. Let this season after Easter be the time you renew your commitment to being part of the Body of Christ back to God's fellowship...back to the church...back to those you were serving the Lord with. Together. It s not just a good idea. It s God s idea. See you Sunday! Grace and Peace! Pastor John

7 God is in the Nursery God is in the nursery with our little ones. There is no greater treasure on this side of heaven than the little ones God has given us. Your role in this service is vitally important for many reasons. The first and sometimes lasting feelings a child will have toward church are formed in the nursery department. I personally still remember the woman, Ms. Gores, who taught me "Jesus Loves Me" in the nursery. As a nursery worker you are being entrusted with the most important and vulnerable members of our church family. Your service is essential for your own spiritual growth. In addition to praying for the children and finding ways to show them God s love while in your care, a growing Christian is always a serving Christian. Jesus was known for putting others first, when you serve in the church nursery you are walking in His example. The church nursery is the first contact young families will have with Tabernacle and your friendly greeting and exceptional care for their children can make a great first impression of Tabernacle's love. Please pray about serving in the church nursery and contact Kim Cripps or the church office if you can offer your time and service in this capacity. Thank you so much! Kim Cripps The United Methodist Church s Social Principles include this statement: We recognize, embrace, and affirm all persons, regardless of country of origin, as members of the family of God. We affirm the right of all persons to equal opportunities for employment, access to housing, health care, education, and freedom from social discrimination. We urge the Church and society to recognize the gifts, contributions, and struggles of those who are immigrants and to advocate for justice for all. Update on the Montagnard Family About 14 years ago Tabernacle UMC sponsored a family from Vietnam through Lutheran Family Services. The family has 6 children and has now taken the last name of Cam. Several of them have become American citizens. About 10 years ago they bought a lovely two story home near a relative who had immigrated here earlier. The oldest child goes by Jen. She and her husband Crow, also Montagnard, have two precious little girls. Her husband started his own tree service and beautifully remodeled their fixer upper home. The oldest son Khan graduated this past spring from A+T University with a degree in electrical engineering. His education was totally funded by scholarships. He recently moved to Kansas City and is working for Honeywell. The next two oldest sons graduated from Smith High School. Mon is taking classes at GTCC and works with Phon at a local barbecue restaurant. Next in line is Phet who graduated from Smith High School this past June and is attending UNCG. The youngest son Het, who was a babe in arms when he came to the USA from the refugee camp in Laos, just began attending Smith High School. Their mother Nhoi and their father Dja both work at the Industry for the Blind. This family speaks for themselves and for other refugees from around the world. Their story is an example of what the majority of immigrants and refugees accomplish when they are given the opportunity. Let us not deny to others that with which we are blessed and take for granted every day. Most of our own ancestors immigrated here from other countries. May we open our hearts and share our love and resources as Christ has taught us to do.
