1 March 2018 Tabernacle Times Praising God C Growing Disciples C Serving The World Out of the Woods COSTLY MISTAKES Three brothers left home, prospered, and were struggling with how to repay their elderly mother for her love, kindness and devotion throughout their lives. The first one said, I will build her a huge house, the kind of house that she always dreamed about when we were kids. And this he did. The second son said, I will buy her a top-of-the-line Mercedes car with a driver, because she always felt that she was our chauffer when we were young. And this he did. The third said, I know that Mom loves to read the Bible and now she can t see very well so I am going to buy her a parrot who can recite the Bible. And so he did. He bought a large brown parrot, hired twenty monks who spent 5 years teaching this bird the entire Bible. In order to get the monks he had to donate $2,000,000 to the local monastery. When he was done all his mom would have to do is name the chapter and verse and the parrot would recite it. Shortly after receiving these gifts from her sons the mother sent out letters of thanks. To her first son she wrote. Thank you for the house but I have found that it is much too huge for my tastes. I really only live in one room but have to clean the whole house. She wrote to the second son, Thanks for the car, but I ve gotten too old to travel. I stay home all the time, so I never use the Mercedes and the driver is so rude. She wrote to the third son, Dearest son, you were the only son to have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken you sent me was delicious. Talk about costly mistakes! That son paid a great price for his extravagant gift only for it to be misunderstood and squandered. It reminds me of another Son - Jesus who also gave an extravagant gift. My prayer (and God s too) is that we might help those who don t understand the true nature and Intent of this gift before their own goose is cooked. [Sorry I just couldn t help myself! J] Paul writes, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 Why not share that good news with someone today!? Grace and Peace! Pastor John
2 2 Palm Sunday March 25 th Palm Sunday (also Passion Sunday) is in the Christian tradition a holiday commemorating Jesus Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem before his suffering and death on the cross. In many Christian churches it is associated with the blessing and procession of palms. This tradition corresponds to the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday is the first day of Holy Week which also includes Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Adult Cantata WHISPERS OF THE PASSION Maundy Thursday, MARCH 29 th 7:00p.m. Join us Maundy Thursday evening as our choir and guest orchestral musicians share the good news of the gospel as we remember the passion of Jesus and the power of the cross. This service of music and message testifies to the timeless truth of grace and redemption. This year s cantata, Whispers of the Passion, allows us to focus on the cross through five inanimate objects present during Christ's Passion week (Palms, Chalice, Robe, Crown of Thorns and Cross) are presented as the "silent witnesses" to the message of grace. This will be a service that includes Holy Communion as a reminder of the Lord s final night and meal with his disciples. In this Last Supper, Jesus shared himself and established the New Covenant with the words, This is my body given you for this is my blood shed for you. Maundy is a term that comes from the Latin, mandatum novum, literally a new commandment which Jesus gives. Join us as together we remember Jesus service and sacrifice for us.
3 3 Community Sunrise Easter Service 7:00 a.m., April 1st at the TUMC Ballfield Join us (and millions of Christians around the world) as we greet the Easter morn and hear the wonderful resurrection message of Jesus victory over sin and death. This year we will join with many other churches in our community for this special service. Well it might be early, but you don t want to miss this powerful time of worship. Coffee, doughnuts and juice will be provided following the sunrise service. Easter Morning Worship Service 9:00am Alive & 11:00am Traditional Services There is no more important service in the Christian year than Easter. The good news of Jesus Christ s resurrection is the foundation for our faith and the source of our hope. Invite a neighbor, friend or co-worker and come help us sing the joyous hymns of new life and victory over death! Experience the joy of this glorious day as we hear again the amazing words of how the stone has been rolled away! When he came near to the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd began joyfully to praise God with loud voices for all the miracles they had seen. Hosanna! Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! Luke 19:37-39 REMEMBER TO BRING FLOWER CUTTINGS TO PLACE ON THE FLOWER CROSS ON EASTER SUNDAY AS YOU ARRIVE FOR WORSHIP ON EASTER MORNING.
4 4 Scout Troop 426 BBQ Fundraiser is close March 23rd! Make plans now to attend and support our local Scouts! CUTB is still in need of cold-weather gear like hats, gloves, socks, 1X-4X jackets, 2-man tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and as always, bottled water. There is a collection box in the Commons area for drop-offs, or you may call Steve for large donations pick up. And, thank you so much for your continued support of this ministry! SAVE THE DATE FOR THE TUMC GOLF FOR HONDURAS TOURNAMENT - JUNE 2ND, AT COUNTRY HILLS GOLF COURSE! What better reason to dust off those clubs than to help send our missions teams to Honduras? Start putting your teams together for a great morning of golf, for an even greater cause. $50/golfer or $200 per/foursome; price includes greens fee, cart, and lunch. We re Going Home That familiar phrase elicits unique images and emotions for each of us. For some it may be returning to your family after a long military deployment; for others it may mean driving to Grandma s house to join family for the Christmas holidays. But for Alger and I going home means at least twenty-four hours on a large jet flying to the other side of the planet to join our friends, partners and family in our adopted homeland Cambodia. Facebook is the best way to track with us on this journey. Go to our individual pages Joyce Garrett Morris and Alger Morris Follow us so our posts will appear on your newsfeed! St. Patrick, Bishop of Armagh (d.461), was a Roman citizen who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Ireland. After escaping to his native Britain, Patrick heard a voice telling him to return to Ireland to serve the people he had met there. It is said that St. Patrick used the shamrock to teach about the Trinity. Its threein-one leaves symbolize Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in one Supreme Being. The Irish people knew intuitively that God is present in all of creation, and St. Patrick showed them that, in the mystery of the Holy Trinity, God was beyond all of creation as well.
