2 Thirukkural The Tirukkural or Thirukkural, or shortly the Kural, is a classic Tamil sangam literature consisting of 1330 couplets or kurals, dealing with the everyday virtues of an individual. Chapter 19 : Avoiding backbiting Even someone, who is a sinner and does not speak of virtue, will benefit from never slandering anyone in his absence. One, who does good deeds much beyond what books on virtue prescribe, will benefit more from never backbiting anyone. Do not slander another in his absence, even if that person does not speak virtuously and has committed heinous deeds. To wear a deceitful smile in one s presence but to slander him in his absence slaughtering his reputation, is more harmful than refuting all that is virtuous and doing unrighteous deeds. It is better to die than to live by backbiting and then being hypocritical; so dying, may yield the benefits spoken of by moral scriptures. It is passable to speak impolitely to someone face to face, but never utter an imprudent word behind the back. One, who extols righteousness but is insincere at heart, is exposed when he is devious enough to backbite. One who smears another behind his back, opens himself up to similar smear when he falters. Through slander behind the back, one who gets estranged from friends, is incapable of indulging in pleasant talk and gaining friends. If one is known to habitually sully his friends for their faults, what damage would he do unto others? Out of its commitment to its virtue of patience, the earth tolerates the presence of a slanderer on it. If one looks at his faults in the same light as others faults, will any harm befell the lingering human lives? Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Pastor Mercy is one thing, malpractice quite another. Why, then, does the defrauded master in Jesus parable praise the devious steward? Jesus shows by example how to sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources, indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No matter how costly such service, or how minimal the return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a reward that is literally out of this world. For Amos and Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical charity toward our neighbor. Paul, too, declares that the only worship acceptable to God is offered by a community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to life, lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument (1 Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Y ear of Mercy challenges us to live as children of light, as devoted to self-sacrificing service as the children of this world (Luke 16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God s kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring treasures. 5 Bible Study A Powerful Study on the Blessed Mother Begins September 7th Have you ever wondered why Mary is so important to our faith as Catholics? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes. Join us for an extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. The Bible and the Virgin Mary is based upon the book Hail, Holy Queen, by Dr. Scott Hahn. It teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture and answers common objections from non- Catholics. St. Mary Parish Sacramento will be hosting this study in the St. Mary School Library (Cabrini Center) beginning September 7 at 7pm and continuing for 12 sessions (no study on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.) Sessions are 90 minutes in length. Cost is $35 per person. Watch the trailer atwww.bibleandthevirginmary.com For more information or to register for the study, call Gwen Devereux at or gwen@devereuxonline.com.
