2 Apostolic Exhortation (Continued) TWO SUBTLE ENEMIES OF HOLINESS 35. Here I would like to mention two false forms of holiness that can lead us astray: Gnosticism and Pelagianism. They are two heresies from early Christian times, yet they continue to plague us. In our times too, many Christians, perhaps without realizing it, can be seduced by these deceptive ideas, which reflect an anthropocentric immanentism disguised as Catholic truth. Let us take a look at these two forms of doctrinal or disciplinary security that give rise to a narcissistic and authoritarian elitism, whereby instead of evangelizing, one analyses and classifies others, and instead of opening the door to grace, one exhausts his or her energies in inspecting and verifying. In neither case is one really concerned about Jesus Christ or others. CONTEMPORARY GNOSTICISM 36. Gnosticism presumes a purely subjective faith whose only interest is a certain experience or a set of ideas and bits of information which are meant to console and enlighten, but which ultimately keep one imprisoned in his or her own thoughts and feelings. An intellect without God and without flesh 37. Thanks be to God, throughout the history of the Church it has always been clear that a person s perfection is measured not by the information or knowledge they possess, but by the depth of their charity. Gnostics do not understand this, because they judge others based on their ability to understand the complexity of certain doctrines. They think of the intellect as separate from the flesh, and thus become incapable of touching Christ s suffering flesh in others, locked up as they are in an encyclopedia of abstractions. In the end, by disembodying the mystery, they prefer a God without Christ, a Christ without the Church, a Church without her people. 38. Certainly this is a superficial conceit: there is much movement on the surface, but the mind is neither deeply moved nor affected. Still, Gnosticism exercises a deceptive attraction for some people, since the gnostic approach is strict and allegedly pure, and can appear to possess a certain harmony or order that encompasses everything. 39. Here we have to be careful. I am not referring to a rationalism inimical to Christian faith. It can be present within the Church, both among the laity in parishes and teachers of philosophy and theology in centers of formation. Gnostics think that their explanations can make the entirety of the faith and the Gospel perfectly comprehensible. They absolutize their own theories and force others to submit to their way of thinking. A healthy and humble use of reason in order to reflect on the theological and moral teaching of the Gospel is one thing. It is another to reduce Jesus teaching to a cold and harsh logic that seeks to dominate everything. A doctrine without mystery 40. Gnosticism is one of the most sinister ideologies because, while unduly exalting knowledge or a specific experience, it considers its own vision of reality to be perfect. Thus, perhaps without even realizing it, this ideology feeds on itself and becomes even more myopic. It can become all the more illusory when it masks itself as a disembodied spirituality. For Gnosticism by its very nature seeks to domesticate the mystery, whether the mystery of God and his grace, or the mystery of others lives. 41. When somebody has an answer for every question, it is a sign that they are not on the right road. They may well be false prophets, who use religion for their own purposes, to promote their own psychological or intellectual theories. God infinitely transcends us; he is full of surprises. We are not the ones to determine when and how we will encounter him; the exact times and places of that encounter are not up to us. Someone who wants everything to be clear and sure presumes to control God s transcendence. 42. Nor can we claim to say where God is not, because God is mysteriously present in the life of every person, in a way that he himself chooses, and we cannot exclude this by our presumed certainties. Even when someone s life appears completely wrecked, even when we see it devastated by vices or addictions, God is present there. If we let ourselves be guided by the Spirit rather than our own preconceptions, we can and must try to find the Lord in every human life. This is part of the mystery that a gnostic mentality cannot accept, since it is beyond its control Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Parochial Administrator

4 LECTORS WANTED Our Parish is in need of Lectors for weekend and daily liturgies. Lectors proclaim the word of God and is a wonderful ministry. Lector training is provided that includes a review of the revised Lector Directives, handouts and a "hands-on" reading at the Ambo. Once training is completed, the Lector is commissioned by Fr. James and placed in the reading schedule. Lectoring enriches one's faith and provides a better understanding of the word of God. All Mass readings are available: Daily Mass Monday Saturday, 8am, Saturday, 5pm, Sunday, 8am, 9:30am, 11am and 6pm. If you have a gift of good speaking and a willingness to share that gift please contact the Lector Chair, Dale Walton, at (916) PARISH VOCATIONS MINISTRY Everyone is called by the Lord to a vocation. Some of us are called to the special vocations of Priesthood, Diaconate or Religious Life. In recent months, we have been asking families to bring home the Vocation Cross and to pray for vocations during the week. To continue to draw awareness to this ongoing need, we would like to form a Parish Vocations Ministry. If you are interested in serving this effort, please contact Deacon Lu at (916) Ext. 12 or at amdg946@sbcglobal.net. For more than 45 years the St. Mary Parish Fireworks booth has raised funds to support Parish Youth Programs. This year we are pre-selling vouchers that can be used at our booth in July. There is a contest to see which class can buy the most, with a Popsicle party for the winning class. Please consider buying a voucher for your family to use at our booth and help support your parish youth. You can also help us sell vouchers after Masses in May and June, plus we plan to sell at Primavera and some mornings in the quad before school. We will be selling after all Sunday masses on May 6 and 20. Contact Aaron Patella at aaronjpatella@yahoo.com or to buy your voucher, to sign up to help or for more info. ART & ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY We would like to thank Suzie Rozewski for her many years of service to our parish as our Art & Environment Chairperson. Suzie has worked very hard to provide us with a beautiful environment for us to worship our Lord in and enhance our Liturgical experience. Suzie has decided to take a well deserved break. Fr. James has appointed Marte Frasca as the new Art & Environment Chairperson. Thank you Marte for agreeing to serve the parish in this very important role. If anyone is interested in helping Marte, please contact her at or marte@jafrasca.com May Rosary in Honor of the Blessed Mother The Rosary offers us an opportunity to step back for a few minutes from the noise and din of life. In our busy modern life with its distractions and discouragements, the Rosary can be a wonderful means of prayer and an easy way to come into contact with the presence of God, Our Lady, and the saints. It is an especially good technique for growing in deeper understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The mysteries of the Rosary now take us through the whole Gospel, into the mysteries of eternal life, which are dimly but powerfully portrayed in the Book of Revelation. (Father Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R) The month of May is dedicated to the celebration of Mary the Mother of God. Please join us in praying a scriptural rosary in honor of our Mother Every Thursday in the month of May (May 17, May 24 and May 31) at 7:00 pm at St. Mary s Church. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

5 The Parish Office will be Closed Monday, May 28, 2018 In observance of the Memorial Day Holiday. We pray for the souls of all who died while serving our country. Thank you to those who have already made a gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. Your gift will make a difference in someone s life. As of May 8, 2018, 220 parishioners have participated this year at our parish, totaling $32, in gifts and pledges. If you have not yet made a donation, it s not too late! Prayerfully consider a gift. No contribution, no act of charity is ever too small or insignificant. Envelopes are still available in the church or the parish office. Don t forget 25% of what you give is returned to our parish. This year, Appeal funds will be used to provide tuition assistance to St. Mary Parish School and assistance to our St. Vincent de Paul chapter. OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary Parish prepares and sustains its members and guests for a life and eternity in the presence of God. In accomplishing our mission, we proclaim and celebrate our salvation through Jesus Christ enlivened by the Holy Spirit, nourish our sacramental life especially in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist and demonstrate our faith worshiping, educating, serving and encouraging vocations as modeled by Mother Mary.

6 THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in baptism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibility to make other disciples. These realities make today s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Holy Hour for Vocations: Please join the Office of Vocations and St. Basil Parish (Located at: 1200 Tuolumne Street, Vallejo, CA 94590) in prayer and fellowship for vocations on Thursday, June 7 at 6 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Vocations at (916) or by at msmith@scd.org. Save these dates for our RCIA Summer Series, presented by the Diocesan RCIA Committee: June 23, July 14, July 28 and August 11, The series is designed for RCIA coordinators, team members, catechists and all those who work with the process. Keep an eye out for more information to come! For any questions, please contact the Diocesan RCIA Committee at rcia@scddec.org. We are gearing up for a new year of Catholic Faith Formation (CFF) for the school year. Registration is open now. We will have a table at the Festival, 8/19/18 and on Sunday 8/12/2018 after Masses for registration. Registration packets are also available at the parish office. These classes for grades K-8 build upon the basics of our faith and apply to everyday situations through the use of Gospel Weeklies. By discussing the upcoming Gospel on Wednesday, the children are more in tune when they hear it again on Sunday and understand how the words written centuries ago still apply to life today. Our classes are held on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school. As a reminder, children receiving Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation must attend 2 consecutive years of instruction per Diocesan guidelines.
