2 The Lenten Journey 2019 Dear Parishioners and Visitors, Our Lenten Journey begins with the Ash Wednesday Celebration on March 6th. It is always understood as the spiritual preparation for the Great Celebration of our Faith, namely, Easter. Following the Old testament Tradition and Jesus own example of 40 days of prayer in the wilderness, the Christian world embarks on this Spiritual Journey of Repentance and Renewal. The three age old practices of Lent are: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. It begins with receiving Ashes on our foreheads. One of the formulas of prayer used while applying Ash on the forehead is : Repent and Believe in the Gospel. What I have experienced in Brooklyn is that on Ash Wednesday there are several Services in all Catholic Churches and great number of faithful come to the Church throughout that day to receive the Blessed Ashes. Even people who do not go to the Church regularly go to the Church on that day and receive Ash on their forehead. Somewhere in their heart there is this feeling that not everything in their lives is perfect and there is need for Repentance and Conversion. The Lent season invites believers to turn back to authentic Christian life. A story is told of a man who, while driving a car, met with a terrible accident. Some people soon gathered at the scene of the accident and came forward to offer him immediate help. But the man said: Oh, there is nothing wrong with me. Someone said: But sir, you have just been in a terrible car accident. You are bleeding and have some deep bruises. There may be internal damage. But the man said: There is nothing wrong with me. Another person suggested : At least have a doctor check you out sir. We shall call an Ambulance and it would not take long. But the man again insisted: I told you, there is nothing wrong with me. Soon, hearing the news about the accident, his wife arrived at the accident scene and picked him and drove him home. Later he died from internal bleeding. There is nothing wrong with me attitude can be a very dangerous position in spiritual life. A true and sincere Christian is one who humbly stands before God and says: Be merciful, O Lord, for I have sinned. The holy season of Lent is a time for our spiritual renewal, by giving up our old sinful nature and being reconciled with God and our brothers and sisters. Lent calls us for a complete change of heart through repentance. This we try to achieve through Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. It is a time for giving up. Think of giving up something hard, namely, sin. Do not limit it to giving up chocolates and candy! Those are superficial things. Eat anything but fast from sin. You don t have to starve but make Satan starve by refusing to sin. I wish you a joyous season of Lent. God Bless you all. Fr. Antony Vadakara CMI Your Pastor., TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

February brought cold and rainy weather, but lots of warmth filled the air when our St. Mary's widows gathered to celebrate Valentine's Day and the February birthdays of our members. We began our morning with a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Sijo. Love was the topic of Father's homily. Father Antony and his two guests from India joined us. The "Birthday Girls" were acknowledged: Gloria Gabrielli, Betty Hill, Jean Hinman, Emily Rossi, Julie Seviecicki and Celeste Gisla. Gloria and many of our members contributed to the yummy sandwiches. Gloria Rossi provided potato salad, and Margaret Machado made a delicious green salad. We also included our Chaplain, Father Sijo, with a birthday song. As they do each Valentine's Day, Judy Clemens and her Mom Rosemary brought bags of little candies for each member. Gloria provided a beautiful birthday cake plus Mass cards for each member who celebrated her birthday. Thank you, Gloria, for all you do! Our next gathering will be on Friday, March 8. We will begin with the Holy Rosary at 9:45 AM, and Mass at 10 AM. We especially remember our dear member, Marlene Sarmiento, who passed away in January. We will surely miss her, as we do all of our members who have passed on. Please call Gloria Gabrielli at: , or Celeste Gisla at: if you are interested in becoming a member of Anna's Ministry For Widows. All are welcome! What is the difference between Funeral and Cemetery? I think I have it all taken care of, I have a burial rite already at the Cemetery. Who picks up the deceased if they pass away at home? What are the Church s teachings around being buried? Why is a Catholic Cemetery important? We are here as your resource through one of life s most difficult times. For more information, please contact Nicole Zamora, Director of Community Outreach, at (916) or by at nzamora@cfcssacramento.org. HOLY HOUR March 7 Holy Hour Devotion is the Roman Catholic Tradition of spending One Hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1673 Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque stated that she had a vision of Jesus in which she was instructed to spend an hour every Thursday night to meditate on the sufferings of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. This practice later became widespread among Roman Catholics. The inspiration for the Holy Hour comes from Matthew 26:40. In the Gospel of Matthew, during the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion, Jesus spoke to his disciples, saying "My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me. In keeping with this tradition, St Mary offers a Holy Hour every first Thursday of the month. You are welcome to come and adore or you may simply lay your cares at the feet of Jesus. Adoration begins promptly at 7pm. If you come late, please enter in silence and sit in back of church so as not to disturb those in silent adoration. Praise be Jesus! Now and Forever!
