2 Thank you. Life is always changing and everything, whether good or bad, will eventually come to an end. Nothing in this life remains the same; only God is unchanging and constant in His love, always. In a parish, from time to time, a new pastor is appointed, and the parish adapts to the new spiritual leader of the community. Back in August of 2008, I was fortunate enough to become the pastor of St. Mary Parish. I fell in love with St. Mary parish immediately because of the dedicated and committed parishioners. I could see from the start that the people here were strong in their faith and in their desire to serve God and one another. I have been a priest for 46 years. During that time, I have been teaching and giving formation to seminarians, served as the major superior of a CMI province, served in a few parishes in India, was the rector of the CMI Major Seminary in Bangalore. St. Mary parish has been one of the most rewarding and the finest parish community that I have encountered. I trust that you will give the same love and support to the new pastor as I take my leave. Finally, I want to thank all of you for your love, prayers, and support. It is hard to leave you, but as I said in the beginning of this farewell note, change is inevitable and all of us have to adjust to it. I want to thank all of you for the many ways you allowed me to be your pastor. As the years go by, I will look back fondly on our time together. While I am leaving you, there is one who remains constant: Jesus Christ. Jesus has been here from the beginning and will be with you for the rest of time. If through the power of the Holy Spirit you allow Jesus to guide (you) our St. Mary Congregation will always have a mission. A passion for our Lord and Savior will see you through all your future trials. This passion guided the earlier congregations of St. Mary, a passion which allowed them to navigate their own trials. They managed and flourished; so, can we. I hope you have a wonderful future. I hope that under new pastoral leadership you find a way to connect with the neighborhood and invite more people to join you Sunday morning. Finally, I share with you the blessing: May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm on your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand Amen. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Parochial Administrator TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Look around most Catholic churches, and you will discover an image of John the Baptist, often in the old baptistery, or in a window near where the font is or was located. He has two feast days in the calendar: one commemorating his birth, and the other his death. There are only three nativities in our calendar: for Jesus, for Mary, and for the Baptist. John s birthday is reckoned according to the schedule given in Luke s Gospel of the angel s announcement to Mary. The angel tells her that her cousin Elizabeth is in the sixth month of pregnancy, and so Mary hastens to help her. Reckoning Christmas as December 25, we count backwards nine months to March 25 for the Feast of the Annunciation. Then we count forward three months to June 24 for John the Baptist s birth. Halfway to Christmas, his nativity gives ample reason for rejoicing in the summer, and his symbols of fire and water are used playfully in bonfires and dives into the sea. Even at the polar opposite of Christmas in the calendar, the energy of Christ s birth in the Incarnation provides cause for rejoicing. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. OUR MISSION STATEMENT St. Mary Parish prepares and sustains its members and guests for a life and eternity in the presence of God. In accomplishing our mission, we proclaim and celebrate our salvation through Jesus Christ enlivened by the Holy Spirit, nourish our sacramental life especially in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist and demonstrate our faith worshiping, educating, serving and encouraging vocations.
3 We Welcome the Following New Parishioners To Our Parish Family: Robert & Kimber Facino Ryan & Katie Little John & Melissa Potter We encourage all New Parishioners to take a moment to register. Poinsettias Last year we were blessed with your donated poinsettias for our Christmas Mass. This Christmas we are asking again for your donation of red poinsettias. Your red poinsettias will be used as part of the Christmas decorations in the church and on the altar. Please deliver your poinsettia to the church by Sunday, December 23, 2018 so that they are fresh for the presentation at the Christmas Vigil. If you have any questions, please call Marte Frasca at (916) , or at mfrasca@saintmaryschool.com. Praying for Your Requests The Prayer Request Group prays for the needs of St. Mary's parishioners and their loved ones. Please fill out a Prayer Request Form and place it in a Prayer Request Box on one of the tables in the vestibule, and we will be happy to pray for you. We usually meet Monday evenings in the Church. In December, we will meet twice in the Holy Spouses Room, at 6:30pm on Dec 3, and at 6pm on Dec 17 before the Penance Service. On Dec. 10 we will meet off site for Christmas. We might suggest that you come early before Mass and shop, so that you won t be disappointed. If you have any valuable gently used articles that you would like to donate, please drop them off at the Rectory before 3pm on weekdays or in the Church Library (vestibule) on weekends before 12/6/18. Calling All Widows! Our November Mass was very special as we honored and remembered the deceased Anna Ministry Widows Group members. Eighteen former members have died since our group began eleven years ago. We also prayed for all of our deceased spouses. Our chaplin, Father Sijo, gave us a very inspiring homily. Mass was followed by a lovely luncheon provided by several of our members. Our next gathering will be on Friday, December 14. Our Mass will be at 10:00 am, preceded by the Rosary at 9:45 am. Our meeting and lunch will be held in the Holy Spouses Room. The lunch will be catered by Vince's Restaurant, and it promises to be special. Please come join in some holiday fun. If you would like to join our Widows Group, please call Celeste Gisla at (916) or Gloria Gabrielli at (916) See you on December 14. BOWLERS WANTED Ladies, if you enjoy bowling, talking with friends, laughing and having a good time with the girls, then the St. Mary s Ladies Bowling League has an opening for YOU! We bowl at Country Club Lanes on Thursday Afternoons (holidays excluded) at 12:30pm (takes about 2 hours) in teams of three. It s only $7 per week...and it s more fun than cleaning the kitchen!! Call Carol Perri (Secretary) at or talk to her personally before/after the 9:30am Mass on Sundays. Thank you to St. Mary School students, parents and teachers and parishioners of St. Mary and Sacred Heart. Together we collected, assembled and delivered 24 Thanksgiving turkeys and food baskets to those in need on our community! There will be no regular SVdP meeting in December. We will have a potluck on December 16. Details will be sent to members. December 30th is the fifth Sunday collection for St. Vincent de Paul Society. Thank you for your ongoing support.. As the fall and winter season are upon us, we expect more calls for help. In addition to your financial support and prayers - we need more members! Have you ever thought about joining us to serve the poor? On January 26, 2019, we will have an orientation/training session and would love to have you attend and learn more about us. Those who want to help will get a binder of information and be teamed up with an existing member. Consider a new years resolution to join us! If you are interested in learning more about our Society please call or Michael Carroll at mcarroll51@comcast.net or Thank you for your ongoing support and prayers.
5 SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous. YET TO DO One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done. Marie Curie Annual Catholic Appeal 2018 Report of Gratitude As we reflect with gratitude for the many blessings God has given us, Catholics throughout the Diocese are invited to view the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Report of Gratitude. By coming together as Catholics, see how parishioners have helped social service agencies in Northern California to provide hope and help to our brothers and sisters in need. More than 253,000 individuals and families, through love and care inspired by Jesus Christ, moved closer to independence and dignity. Take a moment to see the difference you ve made this year. Visit scd.org/annual-catholic-appeal. The 2018 Appeal is approaching $3.7 million in commitments so far. If you have not yet participated, prayerfully consider a donation. No contribution, no act of charity is ever too small or insignificant. Envelopes are available here at the parish, or donate online at scd.org. St. Mary School is now accepting applications for the School Year! St. Mary School offers a preschool to 8th grade curriculum. We invite you to contact us for more information or to schedule a tour, (916) For your convenience, a brochure on our application process is available in the vestibule. Why Catholic School? Many parents ask why they should send their children to a Catholic School. A Catholic School provides a faith-filled, family community environment where children are given the opportunity to receive instruction in their faith throughout each day. High academic standards, Virtue education, and the development of the whole child allows students to grow spiritually, soundly, emotionally, and academically. It s the Catholic School Advantage! CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK begins Sunday, January 27th with Family Mass at 9:30 a.m., followed by OPEN HOUSE from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. This is a great time to show off the great things we offer at St. Mary School. During Open House, our parents will be serving breakfast in the hall. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair will be in the Library for an entire week so don t miss it. We look forward to seeing you there! 12/9/18 ALTAR SOCIETY BOUTIQUE & BAKE SALE FR.
