2 THREE INVITATIONS FROM JESUS Matthew s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) lists three invitations from Jesus that we his followers need to listen to attentively, since they can help to lift the air of discouragement and weariness that often pervades some parts of our communities. If we do not go to Jesus when we labor and are burdened with life s problems, to whom or to what do we go? If we do not look for answers to our problems in Jesus we will not find them elsewhere or else just find partial or deluding answers. The answers of the culture of our time are deluding, because the culture of our time falsely tells us we will find happiness in sin. But sin never brings happiness because sin is sin. Therefore, the culture of this time wants to lay upon us a yoke that is heavy and painful. Pray to Jesus. If you do not spend time with Jesus how can you find his peace? Spend time with Jesus in prayer every day to find his peace. Come to Jesus here in the Eucharist. Open your heart to Jesus. Walk every day yoked to the Lord in prayer and meet him in the Eucharist. «Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest». This is the first invitation. It s directed toward all those who live their religion as a heavy burden. Not a few Christians live beaten down by their conscience. They aren t great sinners. They simply have been taught to have their sin always before them and they don t know the joy of God s continuous forgiveness. If they meet Jesus, they will find themselves relieved. There are also Christians who are weary of living their religion as a worn-out tradition. If they personally meet Jesus, they will learn to be alive, trusting in God as Father. They will discover an inner joy that they don t know yet. They will follow Jesus, not out of obligation, but out of attraction. «Shoulder my yoke it is easy, and my burden is light». That is the second invitation. Living in the presence of Jesus doesn t weigh anyone down. On the contrary, he frees up what is best in us, since he proposes that we live our lives making them more human, worthy, whole. It s not easy to find a more passionate way of living. Jesus frees us from fear and pressure, he doesn t bring them in; he makes our liberty grow, not our slavery; he awakens in us trust, never sadness; he draws us to love. «Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls». That is the third invitation. We need to learn from Jesus how to live like him. Jesus doesn t complicate our life. He makes it clearer and simpler, more humble, more whole. He offers rest. He never puts onto his followers something that he hasn t lived himself. He invites us to follow him on the same path that he has walked. That s why he can understand our difficulties and our struggles, he can forgive our stupidities and our faults, always encouraging us to get up again. We need to focus our efforts to promote a more vital contact with Jesus in our communities that are so in need of courage, rest, and peace. Sadly, it is precisely their way of understanding and living religion that leads so many, almost inevitably, to not know the experience of trusting in Jesus. Think about so many people who, both within and outside of the Church, live «lost», without knowing at what door to knock. Surely Jesus would be good news for them. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Pastor

Poinsettias Last year we were blessed with your donated poinsettias for our Christmas Mass. This Christmas we are asking again for your donation of red poinsettias. Your red poinsettias will be used as part of the Christmas decorations in the church and on the altar. We hope to have many fresh poinsettias for the presentation at the Christmas Vigil. Thank you! Prayer Group Accepting Prayer Requests The Prayer Request Prayer Group meets weekly to pray for the needs of St. Mary's parishioners and their loved ones. 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We had sixteen hundred years experience with one Eucharistic Prayer in our repertoire, and the liturgical reforms of the Council of Trent shaped the way we worshiped for four hundred years. In the last years of the Tridentine Mass, the early 1960s, we tended to see children as miniature adults. Fully rooted in the Sunday assembly by the decision of Pope Saint Pius X to push Communion back to the age of seven or so from the standard age of twelve to fourteen years during the early 1900s, children were still more tolerated than acknowledged. The Mass was in Latin, and by the 1960s the people had begun to regain their voices in the dialogue Mass, so the focus was on training little children to recite or sing in Latin. The new attention to the experience of children, their ability to enter into ritual, their spontaneity, their ability to grasp key concepts in faith, felt untraditional. Yet we can trace in our tradition the ways in which children have long been given a special place in the assembly. From earliest times, boys have served in choirs and certain ministries in monasteries and in parish churches. Girls were sometimes entrusted to nuns, learning liturgical chants and the arts. Yet, in our day, the formation of a Lectionary for children and Eucharistic Prayers suited to them are truly tremendous breakthroughs in our treasury of prayer. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S.
