2 Apostolic Exhortation (concluded) The logic of gift and of the cross 174. An essential condition for progress in discernment is a growing understanding of God s patience and his timetable, which are never our own. God does not pour down fire upon those who are unfaithful (cf. Lk 9:54) or allow the zealous to uproot the tares growing among the wheat (cf. Mt 13:29). Generosity too is demanded, for it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Discernment is not about discovering what more we can get out of this life, but about recognizing how we can better accomplish the mission entrusted to us at our baptism. This entails a readiness to make sacrifices, even to sacrificing everything. For happiness is a paradox. We experience it most when we accept the mysterious logic that is not of this world: This is our logic, says Saint Bonaventure, pointing to the cross. Once we enter into this dynamic, we will not let our consciences be numbed and we will open ourselves generously to discernment When, in God s presence, we examine our life s journey, no areas can be off limits. In all aspects of life, we can continue to grow and offer something greater to God, even in those areas we find most difficult. We need, though, to ask the Holy Spirit to liberate us and to expel the fear that makes us ban him from certain parts of our lives. God asks everything of us, yet he also gives everything to us. He does not want to enter our lives to cripple or diminish them, but to bring them to fulfilment. Discernment, then, is not a solipsistic selfanalysis or a form of egotistical introspection, but an authentic process of leaving ourselves behind in order to approach the mystery of God, who helps us to carry out the mission to which he has called us, for the good of our brothers and sisters I would like these reflections to be crowned by Mary, because she lived the Beatitudes of Jesus as none other. She is that woman who rejoiced in the presence of God, who treasured everything in her heart, and who let herself be pierced by the sword. Mary is the saint among the saints, blessed above all others. She teaches us the way of holiness and she walks ever at our side. She does not let us remain fallen and at times she takes us into her arms without judging us. Our converse with her consoles, frees and sanctifies us. Mary our Mother does not need a flood of words. She does not need us to tell her what is happening in our lives. All we need do is whisper, time and time again: Hail Mary 177. It is my hope that these pages will prove helpful by enabling the whole Church to devote herself anew to promoting the desire for holiness. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us a fervent longing to be saints for God s greater glory and let us encourage one another in this effort. In this way, we will share a happiness that the world will not be able to take from us. James Narithookil, CMI Parochial Administrator TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral liturgy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Christians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. Rev. Altar Society Meeting Our next meeting will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month 11/20 /18 following the celebration of the Mass with Father Sijo in the Holy Spouses Room. It was decided that our Christmas Luncheon would be held at the Olive Garden Restaurant on 12/18/19. Our Bake sale & Boutique will be on the second Sunday in Dec. We will not be collecting for the St. Vincent de Paul Society this meeting because we will be collecting for our CHRISTMAS DONATION. At our last meeting, we surprised Mary by celebrating her 90th Birthday. It was great fun!!! LECTORS WANTED Our Parish is in need of Lectors for weekend and daily liturgies. Lectors proclaim the word of God and is a wonderful ministry. Lector training is provided that includes a review of the revised Lector Directives, handouts and a "hands-on" reading at the Ambo. Once training is completed, the Lector is commissioned by Fr. James and placed in the reading schedule. Lectoring enriches one's faith and provides a better understanding of the word of God. All Mass readings are available: Daily Mass Monday Saturday, 8am, Saturday, 5pm, Sunday, 8am, 9:30am, 11am and 6pm. If you have a gift of good speaking and a willingness to share that gift please contact the Lector Chair, Dale Walton, at (916) ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrection. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright J. S. The cross is presented at the Sunday 9:30AM Mass. The family is asked to gather around the cross each day during that week to offer the vocation prayer which will be included with the cross. Families can make a special place for the cross in their home. Perhaps you can add a candle near the cross or add other touches to make that place special. Then the cross is brought back to church on the following Sunday so that another family can take the cross home. We encourage all of you to pray daily for vocations. Jesus Himself said: Ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for His harvest.
