2 Thirukkural (The Tirukkural or Thirukkural, or shortly the Kural, is a classic Tamil sangam literature consisting of 1330 couplets or kurals, dealing with the everyday virtues of an individual). Chapter 16 : Possessing Forbearance. Like the earth that bears even those who till it, supreme virtue is to be patient with one s deriders. One should always tolerate a transgression; It is even better to forget it. Turning away a guest is the most abject poverty; Enduring the excesses of a moron is the mightiest might. To turn back a guest is an act of the poorest among the poor; to endure the excesses of a moron is the mightiest might. If you want to lead an unabated fulfilling life, you have to preserve and practice forbearance. One who retaliates is not held in high regard; One who is patient is precious as gold. Those who retaliate rarely rejoice for a day; The repute of the patient remains till the end of the world. Even if an untoward evil is done unto you, it is better not to resent and do an unrighteous deed. Defeat a person who has, out of arrogance, done you harm, by your forbearance. One who, patiently, bears the harsh words of a transgressor, is purer than a puritan. Great ascetics who conquer hunger, by fasting, are inferior to those who patiently endure the harsh words of others. Fr. James Narithookil, CMI Pastor Alms atone for sins (Sirach 2:29). Alms are mercy translated into hands-on compassion. Jesus confirms Sirach s wisdom, Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (Matthew 5:7). Conduct your affairs with humility (Sirach 3:17). Humility: we re all alike and special, for we re children of God. Jesus confirms that wisdom, too: Do not recline at table in the place of honor. Take the lowest place (Luke 14:8, 10). In fact, When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite friends, relatives, wealthy neighbors. Invite the poor, crippled, lame, blind, physically or figuratively, society s most vulnerable and marginalized, who cannot repay you (see 14:12 14). Jesus seems to be telling us to prepare for eternity with God s chosen by becoming their friend here and now. Mercy is measured not by our delight in welcoming those we like most or who can repay us best, but by sincerely embracing those we like least, who cannot repay us at all. Utter humility inspires pure mercy; pure mercy leads to eternal joy. Peter Scagnelli, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Please contact the rectory at Bible Study A Powerful Study on the Blessed Mother Begins September 7th Have you ever wondered why Mary is so important to our faith as Catholics? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes. Join us for an extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. The Bible and the Virgin Mary is based upon the book Hail, Holy Queen, by Dr. Scott Hahn. It teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture and answers common objections from non-catholics. St. Mary Parish Sacramento will be hosting this study in the St. Mary School Library (Cabrini Center) beginning September 7 at 7pm and continuing for 12 sessions (no study on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.) Sessions are 90 minutes in length. Cost is $35 per person. Watch the trailer at For more information or to register for the study, call Gwen Devereux at or gwen@devereuxonline.com. You can also register on the St. Mary Parish Sacramento Facebook page! Invite your friends and family! Open to all ages high school and up.

7 Liturgy Committee Did you know your parish has a Liturgy Committee? The committee members are the leaders of the liturgical ministries; altar servers, RCIA, CFF, Eucharistic Ministers, music ministry, school representative, ushers, church environment, lectors, deacons and priests. We hold bi-monthly meetings where we discuss upcoming liturgies, special circumstances for the liturgical season, give the pastor input in decision making regarding the liturgy, etc. If you volunteer in a liturgical ministry your voice is represented in these meetings. When policy changes are handed down to you from your ministry leader they are the product of discussion and collaboration by the committee, with the pastor making or approving final decisions. If you are interested in knowing more about the Catholic faith or want to finish your initiation sacraments (first eucharist & confirmation) contact Deacon Lu (916) ext. 12 During these summer months we just keep plugging away here in RCIA. We have 3 kids, 1 teen and 6 adults preparing for sacraments. A few of these are baptized Catholics and as such will not need to wait until next Easter! This is an exciting time to become part of the Church. There will be another Inquiry period starting on Monday, September 12th, for those interested in learning more about the faith. Please call if you are interested in becoming Catholic. Please pray for all of these people! Please contact Deacon Lu at x12. We look forward to hearing from you!
