2 Thirukkural The Tirukkural or Thirukkural, or shortly the Kural, is a classic Tamil sangam literature consisting of 1330 couplets or kurals, dealing with the everyday virtues of an individual. Chapter 17 : Bearing no envy One should make it a righteous way of life, to hold no envy in his heart. Not being envious of anybody is a rich reward; there is nothing that can match it. One who, in his envy, doesn t appreciate the wealth of others, is known not to value virtue and his own wealth. Those who know of the ills inflicted by envy, will not do anything evil out of envy. One who feels envious of the wealth given away as charity, will have even his kin suffer without anything to wear and eat. For destruction to be caused, there is no need for enemies; if one has envy, it will suffice. Envy is a damned ill that will destroy one s wealth and consign him to a fiery inferno. An envious person doesn t ever attain glory of those who have no envy, there is none who has fallen from glory. Fr. Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel s demands first place. Today s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status as an equal. No, even more a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy challenge me to hate meaning reform, redo, even utterly revamp so I can give everyone, no conditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love? 4 St. Mary Parish 85th Annual Parish Festival Festival Raffle Sneak Peak Registration for CFF classes will be after all Masses this weekend (September 3rd & 4th). FOR THE CHURCH FESTIVAL IN SEPTEMBER They are very popular each year especially in the way that the Altar Society sets them up in the bookcases by categories, they were very easy for the most avid reader to select his or her favorites. Please go through your books now & drop them off in th St. Mary's Church vestibule (formerly the Baptistery) in the boxes provided. We would really love it if you would sort and label them into categories. WE NEED BOOKS THAT SELL!!! NOVELS, MYSTERY/THRILLERS, HISTORY/ BIOGRAPHIES, POLITICAL, WESTERNS, YOUNG ADULT AND CHILDRENS' BOOKS If the Church is closed, drop them off at the Rectory during business hours. We are not having a White Elephant Booth this Year, but something very SPECIAL. It's a SURPRISE!!! If you have a child entering 1 st grade or 7 th grade this year, they need to enroll now for the two-year preparation for their sacraments in 2 nd grade and 8 th grade. Saint Mary s Welcome Committee Volunteers Search As Welcome Committee Chair, I am pleased that we have new parishioners since the beginning of this committee. At this time, we will be making follow up calls to encourage parish registration forms to be returned so that we may update our parish membership list. 5 Bible Study A Powerful Study on the Blessed Mother Begins September 7th Have you ever wondered why Mary is so important to our faith as Catholics? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes. Join us for an extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. The Bible and the Virgin Mary is based upon the book Hail, Holy Queen, by Dr. Scott Hahn. It teaches Catholics how Marian doctrine and devotion are firmly rooted in Scripture and answers common objections from non-catholics. St. Mary Parish Sacramento will be hosting this study in the St. Mary School Library (Cabrini Center) beginning September 7 at 7pm and continuing for 12 sessions (no study on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.)
