A good time was had by all and Brother Ed Cabrera and his family and crew put on a wonderful evening. September is shaping up to be a busy month, starting with a successful Germantown Festival Sausage Shack performance, thanks to a great team effort of many of our brother knights. The results appear to surpass last year, which is great. As we continue into September we have are regular business meeting on the evening of September 18, followed by the annual Christian 49ers meeting, where the past year is reviewed and we have election of officers. All third degree and higher members of our council are members of the Christian 49ers, so please plan to attend both meetings. On September 21, we have a number of events scheduled, beginning with a breakfast we put on for the whole parish, serving it after the 7:30, 9:00 & 10:45 masses. We could use some help preparing the breakfast and ask that interested brother knights contact me (twilson16@aol.com or ) to volunteer to help. We ll meet in the kitchen at about 6:30 AM Sunday morning to begin the preparations. Please come help for what time you can come. Also on the 21 st is our annual Knights vs Senior High Youth Group Volleyball match, organized by Brother Steve Jung, who needs brothers to play in the game, after which we will feed the participants. We also will be delivering one of the two shrimp boils auctioned at our gala this past spring. September 27 is when we install the crosses for Respect for Life, Brother Ed Cabrera could use a few volunteers that morning. On October 5 we will host the annual family picnic, immediately following the life chain, all knights, knights families and life chain participants are invited. On October 18 & 19 we will be participating in the Air Show in Millington, which will include the Blue Angels this year. Brother Alex Mathis (alexmathis@gmail.com) is organizing the volunteers. You get to see the air show from right up front and get fed as well. A great opportunity for you to help our council make some money to support our charitable efforts and to enjoy yourself at the same time. Brother Bob Tragarz is planning another dinner social for late October (we ll post the exact date and time very soon). Please check our website for more activities and information. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. Vivat Jesus! Tom Wilson, GK 2014/15 Council & Call Multiplier Our first year of using Call Multiplier as a communication channel has been a great success. Call Multiplier allows us to quickly notify our members of upcoming events and important news. It allows us to send out phone messages or text messages. One added benefit is that it allows us receive text replies and touchtone responses to our messages. Therefore, we are renewing our yearly subscription for a cost of $ This covers the cost of all phone messages and text messages sent out by the council or the 4th Degree Assembly. Please contact Mike Richert at gricher1@comcast.net if you have any questions. Page 1

3 Community The air show is back in Millington and our council earns money for our efforts running food booths. This allows us to pay for some of our other projects, so in addi on to sharing fraternity and having front row seats to watch the air show, you can help you council earn some income. Please consider helping when we start to send out the e mails and save the date. Church Church God does not Sleep We do!!! How many mes do we get that great spiritual thought in the middle of the night and we fail to record it then and next morning we can not remember any of it except something important was on our mind. ST Joseph was told in a dream get out of town to protect the life of Jesus. He moved then. to head to Egypt God visited Solomon in a dream. God asked Solomon what he needed from God as he began his reign as king. Samuel as a youth living in the Temple, kept hearing a call during his sleep reques ng his presence. His finial response was Hear I Am Lord. Paul was knocked off his horse.i am sure on a long journey he too was half-asleep as most of us are on such long distance travel. Many mes we pray and expect God to make His appearance in similar ways.we want some assurance that we heard it correctly or heard any thing at all..test the spirit for sure Mother Teresa of Calcu a had for many years wondered if God was listening.but she persisted in faith imita ng what she had seen in the saints who had imitated Jesus I have a Jewish friend who declared he was not an atheist but agnos c because he saw so much tragedy among his people and the world in general.are we any different, Are we really Catholic/religious?? or are we going thru the rule book and following a MINDLESS BLURPRINT? Without real commitment...will that get us to Heaven.and see the face of GOD? Have we set the alarm clock of faith dictated by grace or just showing up at appointed mes. The 15 minutes with Sacred Scripture helps prepare us to hear the ny voice that Elijah heard when he was hiding from his persecutors in the mouth of a cave No ma er what me of day or manner God speaks to us AND you will be able to hear Him. YES, HE DOES ENGAGE US DAILLY. Some mes it is a whisper other mes its miracles we a ribute to luck.remember there are no accidents in life. If you are looking for a place to begin start with the Gospel of Mathew and read slowly and reflect. Pick a quiet me.for a moment avoid the noise of daily life. Buy a Bible commentary to read along WITH you re reflec on learn to meditate...find a prayer partner who holds you accountable and Remember God does not sleep and. Its not all about ME God Bless Page 3 Penance on Fridays Do you think Vatican II did away with the requirement to abstain from meat on Fridays outside of Lent? Not exactly, is the correct answer. Canon Law states that "Abstinence from eating meat or some other food according to the prescripts of the conference of bishops is to be observed on all Fridays" (Can. 1251). However, Canon Law also states "The conference of bishops can determine more precisely the observance of fast and abstinence as well as substitute other forms of penance, especially works of charity and exercises of piety, in whole or in part, for abstinence and fast" (Can. 1253). The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a document titled On Penance and Abstinence on November 16, 1966 to clarify the rules. So what is the bottom line? Friday is a special day of penitential observation. Abstaining from meat is no longer "the sole prescribed means of observing Friday". However, the bishops "hope that the Catholic community" will still abstain from meat or perform another act of penance on Friday. God Bless - Brother Mike Richert

The ANGEL Program is an early intervention education program for Autistic Children and the first of its kind in the Diocese of Memphis. The ANGEL Program is designed to offer children with autism year round, intensive instruction using innovative teaching techniques. In just three years, the program has grown to serve over 40 children strictly by word of mouth. Several Knights and family members from Council 7449 were on hand to participate in the 5K and represent our Council. Participants from Council 7449 included Mary Anne Giannini, Chris Cambre, Marvin Schaefer, Andy Schaefer and Amy Schaefer. Mary Anne Giannini, Amy Schaefer and Marvin Schaefer all placed in their respective categories. The event seemed to be a great success with 67 sponsors and approximately 400 runners. Page 4

6 A Brother Knights Journey.. I attended the EWTN Family Celebration Weekend in Birmingham, Alabama on August 16 & 17 at the Birmingham - Jefferson Convention Complex. I met an old college friend there for the weekend. There were many great talks and speakers. Just to name a few there were: Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J., Father, Fr. Robert Barron, Fr. Timothy Gallagher, and Fr. Larry Richards. There were several priests on hand to hear confessions as well as an adoration chapel. There was a Mass on Saturday as well as Sunday. Each Mass had about 2,500 attendees. The Mass on Sunday was celebrated by Bishop Rober Baker of Birmingham. Saturday night, there was a live broadcast of EWTN Live! hosted by Fr. Mitch Pacwa. The guests that night included Joan Lewis from Joan's Rome as well as many of the previously mentioned priests. We enjoyed meeting many of the priests, and as a Fr. Larry Richards groupie, I especially enjoyed meeting him. I've included a picture of Fr. Larry and me, as well as a picture of the stage as it was set up for Mass. Also included is a shot of EWTN Live! as it was being broadcast. The lighting in that picture may be a bit bright. The event is held every year around mid-august. It's held every other year in Birmingham and the other years in a chosen city in the U.S. Next year, it will be in Philadelphia. If I don't make it to that weekend, I will definitely be back in Birmingham in 2016! It was a great weekend for spiritual renewal! I highly recommend it. Respectfully yours, Alex Mathis Page 6

10 Public Responds to Knights' Initiative and Add $1 Million to Christian Refugee Relief Fund 9/10/2014Knights' twin efforts to help those suffering religious persecution in Iraq includes $2 million in aid and a prayer campaign for peace In just over three weeks, the Knights of Columbus Christian Refugee Relief initiative has raised more than $1 million in public donations for those suffering persecution in Iraq and the surrounding region. Combined with the $1 million donated by the Order, the fund now stands at more than $2 million, which will be distributed to support humanitarian assistance to refugees fleeing from the ongoing persecution. Expanding its support for persecuted Christians and those from other religious minorities in Iraq the K of C is also adding a spiritual dimension to its response to the humanitarian crisis, urging Knights and their families, as well as the public, to recite the Prayer for Those Persecuted in Iraq, written by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore. The prayer, available at communications/prayerforiraq.html, asks for a spirit of perseverance and courage for those under attack, and asks the God of all the nations to look with mercy on your servants in Iraq who are persecuted for their faith. It pleads that wisdom may be given to leaders of nations to work for peace among all peoples. Our twin efforts are a concrete response to Pope Francis request for prayers and material assistance for those affected by this terrible persecution, explained Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. He added, We are asking our members, and all people of good will, to pray for those persecuted and to support our efforts to assist them by donating to this fund. The supreme knight also noted, It has shocked the conscience of the world that people are systematically being purged from the region where their families have lived for millennia simply for their faith. It is imperative that we stand in solidarity with them in defense of the freedom of religion and conscience, and provide them with whatever relief we can. The Order has a long history of providing humanitarian relief and has long supported persecuted Christians. Throughout the 1920s, for example, the Knights provided humanitarian assistance and created international awareness of the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. Those wishing to assist with the relief efforts in Iraq can donate to K of C Christian Refugee Relief by visiting or by sending checks or money orders to: K of C Christian Refugee Relief, Knights of Columbus Charities, P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT Donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., is recognized by the IRS as a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, and 100 percent of all donations collected by Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc., will be used for humanitarian assistance for Christians and other religious minorities being persecuted or displaced in Iraq and the surrounding regions. If you would like to get involved in the Soup Kitchen, please contact Brother Bill Satterlee at wcsatt@bellsouth.net Brother Bill Satterlee Chairman Page 10
