Pastors Speak Out This issue we devote this column to the thoughts of Fr. Mike Driscoll. Fr. Driscoll is a Chaplain at OSF Medical Center in Peoria. Most people will never know anything beyond what they see with their own two eyes. I don t usually like philosophical or theological one-liners, but this quote from one of the X-Men superhero movies is a good explanation as to why we have legal abortion in our country. Everyone knows that the baby living inside the womb is the same baby that will be living outside the womb. Put another way, we would laugh at someone who said that the baby is created instantly as it is leaving the womb. How can it be, then, that the same people horrified by the murder of a child outside the womb would allow the killing of that same child the day before leaving the womb? I think it is because they know only (Continued on page 2) Coming Events During coming months, the following pro-life events are scheduled in the Peoria area: Annual 5K Run/Walk: This year the race will be on August 6th. It will be at Bradley Park in Peoria starting at 7:30 AM. Trophies are awarded to male and female winners in several age divisions. Contributions are needed to help purchase the trophies for the run. Call Dan at or CIRTL at for additional information. Fall 40 Days for Life Campaign : Please mark your calendar for September 28 through November 6. There are plans for having a prayerful presence at the abortion clinic in Peoria and community outreach as well. Contact Karen Guth for more information at Annual Peoria Area Life Chain: Central Illinois Right to Life will sponsor the annual Life Chain on S u n d a y, O c t o b e r 2, Organizational help and church coordinators are needed. Call Dan at for more details.
what they see with their own two eyes. Regrettably, I think that we all fall into this same mistake when we sin. For example, have you ever said something negative about a person when they were not present, something you would never say if that person were standing in front of you? Unfortunately, I have. To look at it another way, I like to think that if the heavens opened and I could see Jesus Christ looking down on me, I would be on my best behavior. But since I cannot see Him, I sometimes act as if He is not present. As frustrating as it is, we must continue to try to use the political process as a means of ending legal abortion. More importantly, however, I firmly believe that the victory must come through people living holy lives, lives that conform to the will of Christ. To live such a life requires virtues such as faith, hope, and love; it requires actions such as prayer, penance, and obedience. These virtues and practices are not the type of thing that we can see in the physical sense, but they will endure long after the physical world is gone. When the Pharisees took careful notice of the sins of others without seeing their own sins, Jesus called them blind fools. Let us ask God to grant us spiritual vision, sight that sees more than what we can see with our own two eyes. --Fr. Mike Driscoll
LIFE CHAIN COMMITTEE c/o Daniel J. Smith 7814 N. Radnor Road Peoria, Illinois (309) Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Proverbs 31:8 (NIV) Dear Friends of Children In the Womb: Please join our stand against the greatest injustice of our time at the Heart of Illinois Life Chain on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Heart of Illinois Life Chain is truly a human chain stretching from where abortion deaths occur at 7405 N. University, south on University Street past churches and schools to the Metro Centre, part-owned (12 ½ %) by Washington state s Planned Parenthood, the northwest s largest destroyer of life in the womb. At the north end of the life chain babies who could fill two classrooms perish weekly. At the southern end of the life chain, the Metro Centre which plays host to the Race for the Cure of the Susan B. Komen Foundation which (between 2003 and 2009) donated 3.3 million dollars to the little shops of horror franchised around America as Planned Parenthood. Earlier this year, Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards went on national TV touting their mammogram services to help women screen for breast cancer. A subsequent sting operation proved that Planned Parenthood provided no mammograms whatsoever. We stand in prayer between the death camp and the money laundry, speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves; we stand for the rights of the most destitute among us, the babies in the womb. Signs will be distributed again this year from the center of the Life Chain at the corner of University and Northmoor near Richwoods High School and St. Vincent DePaul School. We also encourage church groups to sign up earlier to fill blocks along the route where your church members may go directly to participate. Please bring as many as you can from your church and help us stretch out along this route. Adults standing 15 or 20 feet apart can provide a clear and continuous witness to those driving by as well as enable us to reflect more prayerfully. Children standing beside their parents in prayer provide a strong testimony of family unity to a culture where family divisions are commonplace. Everyone, young and old, may participate in prayer. You may bring water to sustain your stand and, if you cannot stand, bring a lawn chair, too. Our witness is strengthened especially by the weakest among us. I will gladly speak to any church or group interested in attending. Life Chain signs will be available for pickup weekdays at the Family Resources Center, 321 Main Street, Peoria in September, or at or at the parking lots near Richwoods High School and St. Vincent s Church at the corner of Northmoor and University streets beginning an hour before the Life Chain. May God bless your stand for righteousness on behalf of children in the womb. Most gratefully yours in Christ, Dan Smith, Chairman
Join the NATIONAL LIFE CHAIN! Sunday Oct. 2, :30-3:30 p.m N. University to the Metro Center Meet at University and Northmoor Intersection Stand with thousands of pro-lifers throughout the USA! Water, lawn chairs for the young and old, umbrellas and strollers are welcome! See other side for more details or call LIFE CHAIN is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life Americans standing for one hour praying for our nation and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception.
Pro Life Events Remembered - Annual Benefit Sale The Annual Benefit Sale this year began Friday May 13th and finished at noon on Saturday May 14th. After a few hours everything was cleaned up and done. Funds raised by this year's sale are once again going to the efforts of CIRTL to educate the public on Pro-Life issues. This is due in most part to the extraordinary number of organizers and helpers who donated so much time and effort to making the event a great success. Thank you St Bernard Church for letting CIRTL use your wonderful facility. Thanks especially to those who organized the sale this year. Outreach Committee News: Each Child... Deserves Protection! On the second Monday of each month, the Outreach Committee of persons interested in bringing the Pro Life message into their churches meets at 6:30 p.m. We come together to share ideas, pray, and to renew our efforts to reach people with the Pro-Life message. Past topics discussed have included presentations of The Hard Truth video to church groups, other Pro Life videos, how to stop Planned Parenthood, how to be an effective Pro Life advocate, and other Pro Life activities. At recent meetings we have also worked on organizing the annual fundraising garage sale and have put together mailings and newsletters like this one. Members have also helped organize and contribute to our new Facebook group. Anyone interested in joining this effort should call Dan Smith at Central Illinois Right to Life: Membership and Volunteer Drive If you would like to work with us to defend Right to Life in Central Illinois, fill out and mail this form to receive our quarterly newsletter and/or to let us know that you are available to help with Pro-Life activities and events in the Peoria area.
