1 Germantown Council #7449 Knights of Columbus September Officers Chaplain Msgr. Edwin J. Creary Grand Knight Chris Cambre Financial Secretary Thomas Kirk Deputy Grand Knight Tom Wilson Recorder Steve Cantu Treasurer Troy Traxler Jr. Advocate Marvin Schaefer Chancellor Darren Arnoult Warden Thomas Bachman Inside Guard Dale Jackson Outside Guard Christopher Franz One Year Trustee Gary Frost Two Year Trustee Vince Morelli Three Year Trustee Scott Hamblen Brother Knights and families, as you can see we kicked the new fraternal year off with a bang. Our Cuban themed welcome back social was lots of fun, just ask Frank Suddoth, who won the prize of the night. We may have to get our Supreme Knight to pre-approve Msgr. Creary s pranks ahead of time from now on. On a more serious note, we owe Ed Cabrera a thank you for putting on such a fun event. As you can see from the calendar and the committee reports, we are ramping up our activities quickly. The Germantown Festival is on track. Please don t forget to volunteer. If you are attending the festival stop by the sausage shack and say hello. The sausage shack is just one example of the many activities that council 7449 does to raise money in support of our various charities. You don t have to do everything just pick a project or activity that you feel drawn to and contact the chairperson for that event. These activities are a good time for fellowship with your Brother Knights and a great opportunity to do some good in the name of the Knights of Columbus. I do have some exiting news to pass on. Thanks to the hard work of some Brother Knights in this council, the Christian 49ers have commissioned a Statue of Fr. McGivney to be placed in front of flag pole located near the entrance of St. Theresa Hall. This statue and plaque is designed to honor our past, current, and future Pastors at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. To my knowledge, this will be a one of a kind monument in the State of Tennessee. We are all very grateful to Paul Cardelli, who came up with the idea and has managed the entire project for us. This statue will be officially dedicated on October 6, 2012 immediately following 8:15 Mass. I encourage all of the members of Council 7449 to attend this very special event. May God Bless all of the members of Council 7449 as we work to serve others. Programs Vivat Jesus! Chris Cambre GK On Sunday August 26 our council 7449 represented by brothers Ed Cabrera, Ken Wundra, Mike D'Addabbo and former Grand Knights Tom Fristick and Marvin Schaefer had the privilege to cook and serve dinner at the U of M student Catholic Center after they celebrated Mass on move-in weekend for the current school year. This has been and is still an annual undertaking of our council to welcome back the students. The event starts with Mass which this year was celebrated by Fr. Robby Favazzo and dinner is served afterwards. Mass nourishes their souls and food nourishes their bodies. This year the diocese made a concerted effort to be in contact with new and returning Catholic students and the results were evident as the turnout was the largest they have had. We cooked for approximately 50 to 60 students (including Christy Cabrera from OLPH) with a few parents (including Ed and Cathy Cabrera) and some siblings as well as the Catholic Center staff (Sam and Kathleen) and Univ. of Memphis advisor (and OLPH member) Rick Fisher. Our expert chefs prepared over 70 hot dogs and 70 hamburgers as well as tomatoes/onions and provided pickles/chips and rolls. The food was well received but more importantly we could see new friendships being made and enjoyed. We witnessed a strong relationship of the young people to their faith as they were extremely attentive and participatory during Mass. Father David Graham also attended and spoke to the young adults about the possibility of service to others during the school year. We were very encouraged at this turnout. Continued.. Page 1

2 Knight Of The Month 2012 July - Jim Rolleri August - September - October - November - December January - February - March - April - May - June - Family Of The Month 2012 July - Tragarz Family August - September - October - November - December January - February - March - April - May - June - Your service to our fraternal organization and community is most appreciated, and we want to thank you all Chris Cambre - GK Tom Wilson- DGK Continued from page 1.. This was an uplifting experience for the brothers who were there. In fact we discovered that council 7449 is the only council that does this service (welcome meal) and later in the semester the "fuel for finals" meal. An idea came up that the District Deputy should ask all the knights councils to participate with the student catholic center. The district could commit to cooking for the students one Sunday a month after Mass and assign (or "volunteer") a council to take that month. Many of us are parents and know that the way to a our children's heart is thru food and especially that of a poor college student fending for themselves on weekends. If the district could organize this it would be a great boost to the Catholic center participation program and would hopefully result in greater faith participation of our young adult students. There might even be some chances to recruit future knights!! This dinner cost about $ to put on but the return on investment cannot be measured in dollars only in souls. Program Director - Tom Wilson Article - Mike D. Youth Well, the new school year is upon us. With that comes the weekly meeting of the OLPH Senior Youth group. Also with that comes our annual Knights vs. Senior Youth Volleyball game. The game this year is scheduled for Sunday, August 26 th at 4 PM. The Knights won a close one last year, with hopes of it not being that close this time around. The Senior Youth have a tendency to bring in some high-powered female volleyball players who play for the varsity squads at their respective high school. I believe we are up for the challenge. Be watching for next month s newsletter where I plan/hope to be announcing that we won yet again. Also, just as a note, back in June, the Knights held its annual bowling party for those who had perfect attendance this past OLPH School and PRE year. We had a lot of kids attend this year. It was a lot of fun. Final note, the Knights of Columbus which to welcome the new Senior Youth leader, Charles Tindall. For those who did not know, Matt Hudson, the Senior Youth director for the past several years, moved back up north to help out his family. Charles, welcome to OLPH. Brother Steve Jung - Chairman Membership Membership Growth is our duty I am a dedicated Knight, as are all of you who read this column. As the chair of the Membership Committee, I ask for your help. I want to help this council achieve the coveted Star Council Award. I want all the eligible Catholic males in the area to become Knights so they and their families can be part of this great Order. To that end, I am here to help this council with its recruiting efforts. The help I need is for you to ask someone to join. Remember, most men who could join but haven t yet are merely waiting to be asked. They likely do not know about the many good deeds done by the Order and its members on an annual basis. It is our job to ask them and tell them that with minimal commitment, they too could be Knights. I would be more than happy to speak with any potential candidates, especially those who may be right under your nose. Is your father, brother, cousin, son, son-in-law, or neighbor a member? How about the man sitting in the next pew at Mass? Strike up a conversation and see where it goes. If you are not comfortable striking up that conversation, simply get me a name and if possible, a phone number, and I will start the conversation. To fulfill Father McGivney s vision is our goal. Growing the Order and educating all members about the benefits of membership is the way to do it. Thanks for your help. Jim Rolleri Brother Jim Rolleri - Chairman Jim.Rolleri@KOFC.ORG Page 2

3 Soup Kitchen Family I would like to give a big Thank You to all the brother knights who came and helped support handing out our Family Prayer Cards after each Mass this past August. Once again you all made Council #7449 look good in the eyes of non-brother-knights for what we stand for as an organization. I hope we can receive this much support in our upcoming events in the new fraternal year. Speaking of the new year it is soon time for one of our most fun family events - The Annual Family Picnic. That's right, on Sunday,October 7 we have our largest family event scheduled to take place right after life chain. For all you new knights this is where we eat, drink, play games and fellowship with all who are willing. Just ask some of your fellow knights of the stories they can share of the past picnics - Bingo, door prizes, kid games, horseshoe, adult beverages, great picnic food, and quality time with fellow knights and their families. Come to our meetings to hear more and give any ideas you would like to see take place to make this years picnic a smashing success. Vocations Church Family Chair - Brother Darren Arnoult Through the Knights of Columbus Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP), our council adopts one or more seminarians or postulants and provide them with financial assistance and moral support. RSVP money is used by seminarians and those in religious formation for tuition and books, car insurance and maintenance, travel during vacations, emergency expenditures and other living expenses. Knights provide more than financial support, though. Members write letters to students, sponsor dinners for them, invite them to join the Order and, most importantly, pray for vocations. Last year, we supported three Seminarians thanks to your generous donations and will continue to do so this fraternal year. Tom Bachman - Chairman Do You have One Hour for Jesus? 24 Hour Eucharistic Adoration 6:00 Jesus waits for us each day in our Churches around the world. We have a special gift at OLPH every first Friday of the month. Twenty Four Hour Adoration and Benediction is available starting with 8:15 Mass on First Friday and ending with Benediction before the 8:15 Mass on Saturday. We especially need your presence from 11:00 pm Friday to 6:00 am Saturday. First Friday for September is the 7th. Just a reminder of the promise made to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque by the Sacred Heart of Jesus: "In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the first Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments, and my Heart will be their secure refuge in their last hour." Please join us! Jesus waits for you. 4 Pro-Life As we look forward to October as Respect Life Month, let us prepare our mind and spirit to be open to God s calling. Prepare our minds by learning the key pillars of our faith so that our consciences can be fully formed in the truth. For the Church, there is no distinction between defending human life and promoting the dignity of the human person. Pope Benedict XVI writes in Caritas in Veritate that "The Church forcefully maintains this link between life ethics and social ethics, fully aware that society lacks solid foundations (1). (John ) And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. We will bring the truth to light in October when we stand along Poplar Avenue carrying signs in silent vigil to show our support of life issues and the rights of the unborn. Afterwards, the Knights will host the family cookout that is open to the entire parish. USCCB website; Issues and Action; Human Life and Dignity ( Community Pray for Life - Brother Ed Cabrera Brother Knights, Let me start off by saying, Thank You to all our Brother Knights and their Families who helped with donations & time in the school supply drive for Fayette County Project Outreach. 5 Let the amazing story be told In the early months of 1981 Council 7449 of the Germantown Knights Columbus held a membership drive at OLPH church (chapel). After the 9:00AM mass on Sunday I was standing in the back handing out info about the Knights when a lady ( Mrs. Frulla) approached me and gave me a check for $75.00 in honor of her husband who was deceased and she told me that more would be coming. We took that $75.00 and purchased the crucifix that hangs on the wall in our council chamber. As Grand Knight I didn't know what or if we could accept large sums of money or property as a council. After checking with Supreme I found out we could NOT own property but if we formed a corporation, separate but affiliated with KC council 7449, we could own property etc. So I met with the officers at my house to discuss this and we approved it and so did the council. We incorporated and approved our Christian 49ers by laws on January 18,1981 and I was the Incorporator and first president, We never did receive any more money etc but we were in a position to do so if and when it was presented to us. Father Elliott was our pastor and council Chaplin and of course we discussed this with him and he gave us his approval, He is the one who suggested the we call ourselves "The Christian 49ers" because our council number is 74 (49) and as the 49ers of old, pioneered the gold fields of California. So we as Knights are pioneering our Catholic faith here in Germantown TN and Shelby county. Paul Cardelli - PGK Membership is automatic to 3rd degree only members of Council The actual incorporation of Germantown Knights of Columbus Christian 49'ers in the state of Tennessee was May 5, 1981.The 49'ers is a 501 c (3) tax exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service. We are registered in the state of Tennessee to solicit donations from the public advertising that the donations are tax deductible to the donor. The organization is required to have at least 5 but no more that 9 directors. Currently there are 9 directors. The current Board of Directors and Officers are: Paul Cardelli - Director & President Frank McFadden - Director & Vice President Frank Lamanna - Director & Secretary Howard Giffin - Director & Treasurer Tom Fristick - Director Joe Piacenti - Director Phil Moore - Director Chris Cambre - Director Tom Wilson - Director Through August 23, 2012 the 49'ers have made the following donations/contributions in the name of Germantown Knights of Columbus Council 7449 Organizations other than OLPH or Catholic Schools: $96,700 OLPH & OLPH affiliated organizations and priests: $151,100 Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Memphis: $148,800 Grand Total: $396,600 Page 5

Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of the product among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that 76 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor. Sixty-eight percent of that same survey group said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family s life insurance, retirement, disability income and long-term care needs. I ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about making the wrong decision. Talk with me, and, afterwards, you ll understand that the only wrong decision was not protecting your family s future sooner. 8 Another Over the Edge Success Thanks to all who helped send Team Schaefer Over the Edge for Special Olympics, this year. Team Schaefer, representing Germantown Knights of Columbus, raised over $8300 to help keep the programs of Special Olympics going. New team member, Steve Cantu, is to be applauded for raising over $2800 of this by himself. The day started off rainy, but Team Members, Marvin Schaefer, Mark Pitcher, Jim Nicholson, Amy Strange, and Steve Cantu all got in their rappels, despite the weather. Thanks to all those individuals who came out to watch and cheer on the team...marvin Page 8
