1 Germantown Council #7449 Knights of Columbus November-December Officers Chaplain Msgr. J Edwin Creary Grand Knight Kenneth McLean Deputy Grand Knight George Michael Richert Financial Secretary Thomas J Kirk Chancellor Vincent Morelli Recorder Alex Mathis Treasurer James Clark Advocate David Spence Warden Nathan Hamblen Inside Guard Scott Hamblen Outside Guard Victor Espinosa One Year Trustee Christopher Cambre Two Year Trustee Gary Frost Brother Knights: Let me begin with a question why did you become a Knight? If you re like most of us, your decision to become a Knight had little to do with insurance, feathery hats, or shiny swords. Instead, most of us decided to become Knights in order to become more involved in our Parish, in our community, and in our faith. Sadly, I have seen a steep decline in our council s involvement. We struggle to make quorums at our monthly business meetings. We struggle to find volunteers for our service projects. And, I struggle to find ways to encourage members to become more active. I understand that everyone is busy we work, have families, and are involved in other organizations. However, I would like to make a modest challenge spend 10 hours with us over the next year: (1) commit to work a 3-hour shift at one of our service projects/fundraisers, such as the Germantown Festival, Gala, leaf raking, or Project Outreach, (2) come to two business meetings (3 hours), where we discuss the goings on of our council, and have some time to relax with each other over some beverages and refreshments, (3) bring your family to two of our social events (4 hours), such as the upcoming Southern Night, family bowling night, or the family picnic. We d love to see you, to get to know you, and to hear your ideas on how to make our council better. While I d like to better the experience for our current members, I m also focused on bringing in new members to our council. On November 7 & 8, we will be holding a church membership drive after all Masses. Please plan to attend this weekend. You will be recognized during the Mass. We are also asking all members to ask one. Ask one Catholic man this weekend to become a Knight it could be someone you ve been working on for years, or someone you ve never met. A personal invitation does more than any pulpit announcement, flyer or . I look forward to seeing you on our recruiting weekend and meeting your new prospects. Vivat Jesus! Kenneth McLean, GK 2015/16 Thursday - November 19th, :00 pm - There will be a Christian 49 ers Meeting 6:30 - First Degree Ceremony Regular business meeting following the first degree Dinner and Beverages after business meeting Brother Knights, Please come at 6:00 pm and support our 49 ers, Degree Team, And New Brother Knights!! The success of all our good works rely on a quorum of members to make this very important night happen. We cannot function as a council if we are continually absent. Please make an effort to be there at 6:00 pm. God Bless, Vinny Morelli - Council Director Three Year Trustee Tom Wilson Page 1

2 Youth Hello again! Here hoping everyone had a great summer! As far as ac vi es since my last report, our last major event was our annual Knights vs Senior Youth volleyball game held back on September 20 th. While we had a very small turnout from both the Senior youth and Knights, we s ll had a great me. This year, while the match came down to the deciding game, the Knights were victorious in winning 2 out of 3 games. The best part of the day was that we played a fourth game where we had a combina on of Knights and Youth on both teams. A erwards, we all went down to the Pavilion and had a dinner of Subway subs, chips, and cookies Thanks to all who came out and par cipated. A special thanks to our cooking team who helped prep the meal. Our next event is going to be our annual Free throw compe on in January. Stay tuned for more informa on to come. That s it for now! Again, thanks for your con nued support. Brother Steve Jung - Council Youth Chairman Family On Sunday October 4 we celebrated are Annual Family Picnic directly after Life Chain. We had a nice crowd that came out on a brisk Fall day to enjoy some fun, food & fellowship. Bingo was a hit and everyone went home a winner with a prize or two, while Brother Jim Nicholson & Brother Bob Tragarz dominated the horseshoe event to again hold bragging rights for yet another year. As we enter in to the Thanksgiving & Christmas Season in the Months to come please keep your Holy Family as well as your own close to your heart. Our next major Family Event will be early in the New Year with our Annual Family Bowl. Be on the lookout for more info soon. Council Darren Arnoult - Family Chairman On October 8, Thursday Morning Kenneth McLean, Grand Knight and Myself, met the entire OLPH grammar School for Rosary... Luminous Mysteries... and brief introduction to the Silver Rose During the Day The rose was on display before the main altar and a life size statue of our Lady of Guadalupe During School hours various classes from the school would visit, view the rose up close, pray, and learn more about the Silver Rose and Our Lady of Guadalupe. Members of the OLPH parish would come to pray and visit the Rose. The rose was guarded though out the day by Knights from council 7449 AT 5;30 pm The Silver Rose was escorted into the OLPH Sanctuary by a Honor Guard consisting of Members of the 4th Degree HOLY CROSS Assembly. Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Silver Rose were Honored with Holy Rosary, Benediction, Scripture readings, and Our Lady s Litany of Loreto. Msgr. Creary conducted Benediction and spoke on the history of the Silver Rose to the assembled OLPH parish (about 50 attended) At the conclusion of the OLPH ceremonies, The Rose was then transferred to Saint Francis of Assisi council (TOM C.) by the Honor Guard. Soup Kitchen St Vincent DePaul Fraternally - Bill Chiles The first Saturday of each Month is our schedule date for this ac vity. We could use more Brother Knights par cipa on to help feed the homeless. When was the last me, you did your part? 3 Happy Birthday Council 7449 Germantown 36 Years this December 2015 Purposeful Meals It has been a mean day at work and all any of us want to do is get away from the world. One kid is screaming another wants help on a math problem and the kitchen sink is backing up. And oh yes, there is a kids outing in an hour, Well, settle everybody down you included and sit around the dinner table to talk and eat. It may be leftovers or something of a favorite dish but it is so important to share some family time before we continue with the next event in life. Well maybe tonight is not the best night but set aside a night each week to re-establish your family ties and values. Don t wait for Thanksgiving for family time. Not only to eat together but to listen to each other. yes turn off all electronic devices. Even your cell phone. Moving on from your dinner table by which you receive nourishment for your bodies.what about nourishment for your soul. I am referring to the Eucharist. Holy Communion think about those words. Thanksgiving (Gr eek tr anslated) and Communion (with whom not a phone call fr om someone) but union with our cr eator yours and mine The wonderful meal you had with your family satisfied the body and allowed communication with loved ones. food nourished your body that nourishment became a part of your body. The Eucharist is something beyond nourishing your body it goes to your eternal soul (that soul will live forever). God in the Eucharist becomes part of us really Jesus is living in us. We can say we become part of God what a wonderful thought a bit of heaven come down to earth. If you are a grandparent you are critical to demonstrating the wisdom you have gained from your life experiences and your knowledge of your faith to your grandchildren and those around you. God has been enjoying meals with mankind for a long time. Many times we have seen the importance of meals in scripture. Abraham before he fathered Isaac, he fed 3 strangers who promised him an heir by next year, The Passover meal God told the Jews of today not only to remember this meal but to see themselves at the Passover with their ancient relatives as if they were celebrating the meal with them. The Last Supper was another such meal? Not just a meal but The Meal during which the Eucharist was instituted. Bread and Wine became Jesus Body and Blood Not just a remembrance J esus did not lie He said it His body and His blood. He meant it. The Resurrection and His many following appearances demonstrated HIS being alive in the body and spirit his Divinity He is God he created all that we know so bread and wine becomes as he says My body and My Blood So at Mass we should hang on every word spoken as if our future depends on it. The problem is our weak human nature tends to wander to the material things that coat our lives well we need to keep trying to bring our minds back to God. At the end of the Mass the celebrant might say Go forth and bring Christ to all Yes, you are a tabernacle who is bound to carry Christ to others This meal is so so so important keep trying to find your special place in Salvation history..starting with The family meal where you can share Godly virtues and The Mass during which you receive God s Sacramental love in the Eucharist to pass Christ s love on to others - God Bless, Brother Bill Chiles Council 7449 Germantown Brick laid at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Retreat Center statue. 4 PROJECT OUTREACH Shona Moore, OFS 9183 Sycamore Creek Cove Germantown, TN Serving the Poor of Fayette County October 12, 2015 Dear Knights of Council 7449 of the Knights of Columbus Before memories of last year s bitter cold winter have slipped our minds and before the colorful leaves of 2015 turn to bare branches I d like to look back with you and thank you for the families you have helped through Project Outreach over the last four decades. Some of your members have been and remain our best volunteers and our dearest friends. When we started together you had already been helping Sr. Elaine Wicks for many years. Some of you were her right arms as she built a ministry in the 70 s to help care for some of the poorest people in the U.S. When I came along after her death in 1998 your helping hands, among others, assured me the project could go on, and it has. Having my Knight, Phil, join me in this work has only lightened the load and multiplied the blessings. Now, Sister Elaine Wicks Memorial Park has become a gathering place for the community on five acres with a pavilion, bathrooms, storage facilities and a playground. The families we help with food, toys, blankets and warm clothing for Christmas have multiplied from 40 to 240. In August, we had school supplies for over 600 children in Fayette County and were able to share from the abundance with St Paul s School (Fr Johnie), Resurrection School and Little Flower School. Our God is so good! As you can imagine, winter coats for our children are of utmost importance and you have graciously raised money and ordered coats for us the last few years. This year, to comply with your wishes to be present with us when the coats are given away, we are going to let you guys hand out the children s coats at our coats Thanksgiving distribution rather than Christmas and moving our Thanksgiving distribution to a Saturday. We use nearly 50 volunteers for Thanksgiving so we need to ask you for a count of the number of Knights who will join us in the park, in Fayette County on Saturday, November 21. We will adjust the number of other volunteers accordingly. Our Schedule: Meet in the Walmart parking lot in Collierville: 7 am, Saturday, November 21. Carpool 35 minutes to the park and divide bulk food and stock the pantry. Distribution: 10 am - 1 pm to 150 families. We are often finished earlier. Let your souls be content (and without pride) in the knowledge that your contributions to this ministry are answering God s instruction to care for HIS poor. You and your needs are remembered in prayer each time we gather at the park. We are extremely blessed to enjoy your support and friendship. Through Christ and in His Love, Phil and Shona Moore, OFS Page 4
