2 Rev. Rhonda Hobbs Love to Be Clean! Today is Hobo s bath day. Hobo is my sweet 16 year old Shih Tsu who loves to be clean, but Hobo hates a bath! He is smart enough to know that when the water begins to run in the tub and I get his shampoo and towel out that it s bath time. He starts trembling and shaking, looking at me with those big sad puppy eyes - please don t give me a bath. He hates to have his face washed he can turn his head around almost like an owls trying to avoid me washing away the dark circles from his eyes. When I dry him with the towel, he shakes as hard as he can thinking that if he can dry himself off he could avoid the dreaded hair dryer. Drying his hair always takes a lot longer than the washing part and within a few minutes of hearing the hum of the dryer and having his back massaged, Hobo relaxes and starts to enjoy at least this part of the process. Thirty minutes later out comes a fluffy clean white dog, smiling from ear to ear, wagging his tail, as he struts down the hall. Hobo hates a bath but he loves to be clean! Watching him strut about so proud to be clean again, makes me think of the lyrics to the Brooklyn Tabernacle song I m clean, I m clean by the power of His blood, I ve been cleansed in the fountain of blood shed for me I m clean. I love to be clean too, spiritually that is; but I hate the bath. I think most of us would agree that we love to be spiritually clean, to do those things that are pleasing to God, to allow His love to cleanse us from the inside out, but we hate the bath. Giving up bad habits, having God correct us when we think unloving thoughts or say unloving things or when we resist doing loving deeds of kindness, is like a bath for our soul. However, the cleansing process can be uncomfortable and painful. Like Hobo, we try to hide, we act like we re afraid, we pout, we even try to butter God up with flattery, hoping to get it over with faster, but becoming clean is a process it takes time, and we have to cooperate with God s Holy Spirit. Critical elements of the soul cleansing process are worship and prayer. How s your prayer life? I look forward to seeing you in worship this Sunday morning as we focus on how Jesus taught His disciples to pray. Shalom! Rhonda The Pasta and Bluegrass Festival benefitting Family Promise will be held on August 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Bearden (pasta will be served until 7:00 p.m.) This year the event will offer expanded entertainment with more Bluegrass and more children's activities. As always you will be able to sample 16 competition level pastas and vote on your favorite. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids with a family max of $30. Please see Liz Wright or Ed Coppock for tickets or buy online at EventBrite. This year we are emphasizing all types of pastas including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free! Family Promise continues to be the only family shelter for the homeless in Knoxville and always has a waiting list of up to 40 families. So far in 2016 they have sheltered 16 families: 56 individuals, 33 children with 9 of those being under 5. In 2016 an amazing 100% of the 12 families exiting shelter have successfully found safe secure sustainable housing! Family Promise also works with those housed for 2 years, vastly increasing the opportunity for sustainable housing. Family Promise is an important ministry at Trinity. Please consider becoming a sponsor. The success of this event really makes or breaks the Family Promise budget. Help get the word out to your business partners and colleagues. Together we can bring homeless families from brokenness to transformation. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind--yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. (Ephesians 5:25-27, NRSV) 2 15
3 Rev. Brenda Dowell Do You See What I See? A woman reflecting on teachable moments in life tells this story. A couple of years ago a friend of mine fell off a bike during vacation and hurt her knee. She and her husband were going on a hike in a national park, and she could only walk very slowly. She discovered her slowed pace helped her look at the world as if through a microscope. New Phone Number Since moving to Savannah, Georgia, Bob and Sheri Witzak now have a new phone number that they would like to share. If you would like to give them a call, their number is Family Promise MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Trinity will host Family Promise the week of September Sign-up sheets will be available in the gathering area beginning Sunday July 31. Thank you for your continued support of this wonderful mission! As they walked along so slowly, she discovered a lizard that was in the process of devouring a centipede. They spent ten minutes watching. The centipede was trying to sting the lizard, but the lizard knew just how to avoid that. Of course I would have missed this if I hadn t hurt my knees Right behind them there was a single hiker with a big camera. Every time a friend stopped to examine a wild flower, he would stop and look too. Finally, the hiker came up to her and said, You're seeing so many wonderful things. I m seeing these wonderful things, she told him, because I can't walk very fast. School begins in August for many from elementary to college classes. This is a time to reflect and engage in the teachable moments of our lives. Psalm 25:4 says, Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. If we don t take the time to allow the Spirit to lead and teach us, how will we know the ways of the Lord, how will we see the beauty of God s creation and listen to what it is trying to tell us? I challenge you to look around you, enjoy the learning environment you are in whether it is in a classroom, on a hike, spending time in your garden, etc. Everyday God is giving us opportunities to learn and grow. What will your next learning moment be? Blessings, Rev. Brenda 14 3

7 In spiritually educating our children, we think about what distinguishes spiritual from other sorts of development, the nature of children's spiritual experience and how we can engage children in this experience. We know that they model us and we strive at Trinity to lead by example and to do our best to promote their spiritual growth. As our children develop and grow, we support them in their efforts to know God and to build that relationship with God. On Sunday, August 7 we celebrate their spiritual formation as we promote them to other classes to further their education in this church as they learn how the power and love of God can help them on their life journey. Please come to this special Promotion Sunday. Promotions will take place in the Bridge worship service at 11:00 a.m.. Thank you for your care of our children. Blessings, Rev. Brenda Children s Sunday is coming up on October 23. Parents please talk with your children concerning this important Sunday when they will be leading the service. We will, also, be honoring all our church teachers. 10 To all the parents of our children and youth. There is a parent meeting on August 21 right after the Bridge Worship Service. Bring a picnic lunch and join us for this important meeting as we talk about the exciting new year coming up for our children and youth here at Trinity. Some of the older youth will help watch the children so the parents can attend the meting. Thanks for all your support. Newsletter Schedule Change Please note that there is a change in the scheduling of the next newsletter. The September newsletter will be printed on August 23, not August 30. We will return the normal newsletter schedule on September 27. Attention Small Groups! Rev. Rhonda Hobbs would like to meet with each of the small groups here at Trinity! Please contact Rhonda with a couple of your meeting dates that would be convenient for you to meet with her!
