1 Connecting People with God, Each Other, and the World Trinity UMC Trinity United Methodist Church 838 North 25th Street Fort Dodge, IA facebook.com/trinityumcfortdodge June 2016 On Monday, May 9th we had a small reception for the celebration and consecration of our newly remodeled kitchen. We were proud to honor Pauline Morrison's gift and welcome her two daughters and their husbands, Deb and Mark Culley and Peg and Tim Watson. Jeff Siems and Dale Conklin gave Deb and Peg a tour of the kitchen and the steps the renovations went through. Further everyone had a chance to share a memory of Pauline and her life at Trinity and Deb and Peg shared their life with their mom and their life now. Pastor Ron concluded with a wonderful consecration program. Check out the pictures in the hall of the church.

3 What is your favorite thing to do in the summer? Maybe it is going on vacation, going to the pool, spending time with your family and friends, going to concerts, playing sports, grilling, going to work (yeah, right!) - the list can go on and on. There are so many opportunities in the summer, and sometimes we try and cram it all in that we forget what summer is about - rest. In my life, my favorite summer has been in I had the opportunity to spend ten weeks in North Myrtle Beach, SC. I went with a college ministry, and had a blast. We had Bible studies, mentoring, work, community events, evangelism, and lots of fellowship. Through the busyness of everything, I managed to find one afternoon a week to be by myself. I would go on walks, bike rides, take naps, but my favorite thing to do was go to the beach and just sit, listen to music, and read my Bible. (And apply sunscreen every 20 minutes because I am one of two colors - white or red!) That was my favorite summer because it was a time where I would stop and spend time with God amidst the busyness of life. In those moments, my faith grew in immeasurable ways. I learned how to trust God in my life, how to rely on God through good and hard times, how to study Scripture in a way that would reflect in my own life, and how to tell others about the good news of the Gospel. So let me ask you a question - what can you do in the summer to slow down and spend time with God? Our lives are hectic. There's stuff to do, people to see, families to raise, the list is endless. But I believe with my whole heart that above all of that, God needs to be our first priority. Take 5-10 minutes each day between the chores of this life to remember that, pray, read or listen to scripture, and have fun while you do it! I promise you, it is worth it. Megan

4 I know it is currently NOT politically correct to mix patriotism and religion in some folks eyes. However, in my way of thinking and valuing the American experience; the three American summer holidays, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day, can t be just secular observations! How can we observe the profound dedication of the men and women who served our country in the military, how can we celebrate the founding of our country and the faith of the founding mothers and fathers, and how can we be grateful for the men and women who go to work every day to make our lives and living better; without thanking God for giving all Americans, past, present and to come, courage and strength to be faithful??? Fourth of July is a big deal for our family. For the Kittermans it probably ranks right behind Easter and Christmas. So as summer gets started with Memorial Day, peaks with July 4 th, and ends with Labor day, my faith feels a special connection with the season of summer. I believe we Kittermans extend that connection from the supposed secular holidays to God and all Americans. There is a song from the musical, Porgy and Bess, that says: Summer time, and the living is easy! Let s not forget on Memorial Day, the 4 th of July, and Labor Day why the living is easy! [Hint: Its not just because of the weather!] With gratitude, let s connect our faith to all the people who have made America good and great! I hope we can remember what the flags and flowers in the cemetery, the fireworks in the sky and the Labor Day picnics all point toward: a nation of dedicated and faithful people, past and present and to come! A people who understand that with God and together, all good things are possible!

5 Summer is upon us, and it is time to get outside to enjoy the weather and our surroundings. The long sleeve shirts can finally be put away along with the snow shovels, snow blowers, and sidewalk salt. The picnic tables, lawn chairs, and our favorite pair of shorts can be brought out of storage. This is the season of year which I think God was talking about when He declared, it was very good in Genesis 1:31, but then again I just don t like winter. Whether God has a favorite season or not, I don t think I will ever know that until I reach the gates of heaven. What I do know though is that God created the heavens and earth. That creation is to be enjoyed each and every day. As we travel around on summer vacation, or simply get outside for a barbeque with friends and family; take a few moments and look around. Those beautiful flowers, green trees, lush lawn, and blue skies are all blessings from God which we should not take for granted. This summer, I challenge you to offer God a prayer of thanksgiving for such a beautiful creation.
