2 Can We See What GOD SEES OD SEES? The Christmas song, Do You Hear What I Hear? is stuck in my head today. Carrie Underwood s beautiful lyrics ask us, do we see the stars dancing at night, do we hear a voice as big as the sea, do we know a child shivers in the cold and then the King says to listen, people everywhere, listen to what I say pray for peace people everywhere! That is my prayer for you today. That you would know the goodness and light the Christ Child offers and that peace would pervade your life. This time of year is magical as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, God Immanuel. Of course the glitter, presents, excitement of children, and more food than anyone should eat heightens the magic in the air, but there is really one part that strikes me more today than it has in Christmas; past. It s the bridge.. the bridge that leads from the ending of one year to the beginning of a brand new one. That s the magic! Over the next couple of weeks we stand on this magical bridge that we can see the year behind us, we can rejoice and lament over the past and simultaneously be filled with energy and excitement and enthusiasm about what the New Year holds. It s that place that Henri Nouwen describes as where life and death kiss each other. It is a strange feeling of laughing and crying at the same time. It is magic. It is holy. I look back at 2017 and praise God for all the new friends I am getting to know here at Trinity during my first year. I am filled with joy as I think about the way you have poured out your love to me and my family during my daddy s death. I read the Christmas cards and your words of love and 2 Rev. Thank you to all of the volunteers who supported Family Promise during our recent host week! We are happy to report that 2 of the 4 families who stayed with us are now in their own homes! I ve loss two very dear friends who died way too early in their lives. Yet, at the same moment, I celebrate the birth of a friend s first grandchild. Yes, where life and death kiss each other is a very magical and holy place. As we stand on the bridge between 2017 and 2018 can we see what God sees? Do we try? Is it important to us to try to see our lives and our world from God s perspective? Do we have the courage to be on this magical bridge for longer than a day or two? DARE A place where we can rejoice over all that is good, godly and wonderful in the world while at the same time we hold the heart-sickening grief have the over the hatred, bitterness, and courage to try? devastation that at times seems to be rampant. 6 Life Together Coming or Going??? As I write this article, it is December 19 th and with all the last minute preparations, the parties, closing 2017 out and planning for 2018, I m not sure if I m coming or going! Do you ever feel that way too? (Like going into the kitchen and when you arrive you forgot why you went in there in the first place!) How do you know if you re coming or going? Do you make a list? Do you plan out your day so you know where you going next? A funny paradox occurred to me in the midst of all this busyness most of us think about coming to church, but Jesus said for us to GO! In fact, these are the last words Jesus spoke to His followers: "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation (Mark 16:15, NRSV) What s up with that? Surely Jesus knows if He s coming or going. Aren t we supposed to come to church? How do we know if we re coming or going as a church? On Sunday, January 14, 2018 immediately after our 11:00 a.m. worship service, the leadership of Trinity UMC will be hosting our first (but not last) Church Townhall. We will gather in the gym for a soup and salad lunch and then spend time sharing about the state of our church. We have lots of accomplishments to celebrate, business information to review, and important ideas to share with you. We also want you to bring your questions and ideas to share with your leadership team. Where do you want to offer your applause? How can we do life together better? So are we coming or going? Both. You see we were created to worship God. Our whole reason to exist is to bring our praises into God s sanctuary. Coming to church to worship, to learn and grow together was already a regular pattern in the lives of Jesus disciples. Are you coming? Jesus has charged ALL who want to be His disciples with a mission, a purpose, GO into all the world and give them good news! Are you going? We look forward to being together as a church family, please make plans to come to this very important celebration! During this time (12:00-2:00 p.m.) the children will go to Fowler Hall to enjoy lunch and movie. 6 Praise Report! Jared Weyand, nephew of Karen Lang, has been on our prayer list for over a year when he started his treatment with brain surgery and then radiation and chemotherapy which he has just finished. I received this note from my brother, his dad; Just a quick note to let you all know, we went to Jared s appointment and got good news. There is no mass present, only the chance of micro cells. He has completed his chemo at 130 lbs., but already starting to feel better after 2 weeks out. Thanks so much for your prayers and thoughts. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! I know ours is already blessed. Love, Dave Mark Your Calendars! January 4, 2018 at 10 am 2 pm: Staff Retreat January 14, 2018 at 12 pm 2 pm: Soup & Salad Lunch with Church Town hall Meeting to follow. This is for everyone active in the life of Trinity UMC. Child care will be available. January 27, 2018 at 9 am 2 pm Leadership Training Retreat for all church council members January 18, 2018 at 10:45 a.m. Our speaker will be Kathryn Compeau, mentoring initiatives recruiter with Knoxville Leadership Foundation. They have a very good program for helping children with life skills so it should be very interesting. See you there! 11

7 Worship and Prayer Wednesdays Dear Trinity UMC Members, As we head into 2018 we pick back up with our busy schedules after the holidays of school and work. As we do, I pray that we all continue to live with the spirit of the love of Christmas in our heart. The youth will be attending Resurrection January Please keep them in your prayers as they attend this spiritual retreat. Would you like to stay connected and know what is going on with the youth in the church? If yes, then you can ask to join Trinity UMC Crossfire Youth on Facebook, Trinity Crossfire Youth on Instagram, and/ or sign up to get Remind texts. To sign up for Trinity UMC Crossfire Youth Remind texts follow the directions below. On your cellphone enter the number and message below and hit send. You should get a message saying you have joined Mr. Balcom s Trinity UMC Crossfire Youth. IF it sends you a text asking for any further information, then just answer the questions. To Message Here is a prayer to pray for the youth and children this month. "Lord, please instill in my children a soul that 'followeth hard after thee,' one that clings passionately to You." (Ps. 63:8) Donald Balcom Director of Youth Ministries As we ponder and pray about where God would have us go in the future, it is vital that we pray together as a church family. From January 10 th to February 7 th, rather than have a Bible study, we are requesting everyone who is able to join us in a season of worship and prayer specifically to discern God s will for Trinity. We will gather in the sanctuary after the Wednesday meal, at 6:15 p.m. for one hour. We will offer God songs of praise, have a time of sharing, and time of corporate and individual prayer. Your prayers and participation are very important! Wednesday Bible Study (February 28 April 11, 2018) John s Revelation Yes, we will go where angels fear to trod and study the Book of Revelation. Wednesday Bible study will resume February 28 th and we will again offer two different time periods, a morning class in the Logos classroom from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and evenings in Fowler Hall 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. If you ve been mystified, confused, or curious about this intriguing book of the Bible you will not want to miss this class! Even if you have studied it before, come join us to hear what may be new insights into demystifying the Word of God. There is no cost for this class, you will need to bring your Bible and will do reading between classes. Come and bring a friend! Please note that there will be no Fifth Sunday Lunch on Sunday, December
