1 FOUNTAIN VALLEY United Methodist Church Family God Showed Up at General Conference! The news from Portland at the recently concluded General Conference of our denomination is mostly good, from the perspective of orthodox, biblical United Methodists! Here is a short list of the notable decisions made. We successfully completed the Imagine No Malaria campaign, raising over $75 million to eradicate this deadly disease in Africa. The denomination made decisive moves toward a more pro-life stance, withdrawing from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, and voting down an attempt to reaffirm support for Roe v Wade (the federal court decision legalizing abortion). The denomination withdrew from an anti-israel lobbying group and refused to divest or boycott companies that do business with Israel. While none of the legislation to strengthen our stance for a compassionate, biblical position vis-a-vis homosexuality made it to the floor of the conference, many petitions were approved by legislative committees by strong majorities. In an effort to avoid a division of the church, the General Conference approved a suggestion from the Council of Bishops to form a commission to discuss and study the matter and return with legislation at a special called General Conference in 2018 or But with the growth of the UMC in places like Africa (where UMs are conservative and evangelical), our denomination will continue to become more orthodox and evangelical. Whatever is suggested by this special commission will have to be passed by a more conservative General Conference, so the likelihood for a liberalizing of our positions is extremely unlikely. Our own Karl Baumgardner was there in Portland for the first week, helping with the prayer ministry, so if you have any questions, see Karl for his perspective! Our prayers have been answered, but we need to continue them! The coming few years are critical for restoring the United Methodist Church to its orthodox, Wesleyan roots. 2 The FVUMC Family Communique Church Council Meeting The next quarterly Church Council Meeting and potluck is scheduled for June 12th after service in the MPR. The Fount is Coming! We ve been talking about this for a long time, but the time is almost here! We will be changing our name, as a church, to The Fount this month. On Father s Day, June 19 th, we will officially change our working name and our new logo and branding will be unveiled. This is all an attempt to make our church more accessible to people who are not from a churched culture, which most people these days are not, especially younger people. The Fount is a unique name, that connects us to our roots in Fountain Valley, and to the Fount of every blessing (i.e. Jesus)! It may seem awkward at first, but getting used to it will be fun! Think of it as a nick name for our church! You will begin to see symbols of fountains, water features, our new logo and more showing up around the church in the weeks to come, including changes to our sign out front. Even our website will change its address to: TheFount.Church (but you will still be able to get to it via fountainvalleyumc.org). We are not changing our corporate name; it will remain First United Methodist Church of Fountain Valley. And we will not hide the fact that we are a United Methodist congregation. 3 June 2016 Gospel Swamp at The Fount! Over the summer, we will be hosting a special, casual time of worship and testimonies on the fourth Saturdays of June, July and August. We ll gather in the patio outside of the Multiple Purpose Room at 7:00 PM to sing some songs of faith, share some scripture and share testimonies of how God is moving in our lives and our community. We are calling it Gospel Swamp because of its connection to the Gospel Swamp tradition of our area. It will be geared to young adults, but everyone is welcome, of course! This would be a great way for us to meet new, younger Christians and pre-christians, and to engage with them in matters of faith. Our vision is for it to be intergenerational. The warm summer evenings will afford a perfect environment for these services, so plan now to attend. And pray that God will draw whomever He desires to be there. What a great way to fellowship with others and make some new friends while enjoying the beauty of one of God s wonderful outdoor settings. 3

What a great way for the family to have some fun and enjoy fellowship with others! The Youth Mission Team of FVUMC and La Cima will be hosting a yard sale to raise funds for the their mission trip to Arizona July 30 to August 6, Where: FVUMC Front Law n Date: Time: June 18 th 6:00 am to 2:00 pm If you have items to donate, contact Ric Seaver or Sonja Perez. Mission Trip Fundraiser BBQ Join us for a Hot Dog Fundraiser June 26 th hosted by our Youth Mission Team immediately following services. Donate $5, $10 or even $50 to enjoy amazingly delicious gourmet hot dogs and incredible homemade sides. First time visitors can enjoy the meal on the house, so bring a buddy! 4

5 June 2016 End of School Year Coming! We are coming to the end of our preschool year. The last day of school for the Tuesday/Thursday children is June 14th with family picnics from 11:30 am 12:00 pm. The 5-day and Monday/Wednesday/Friday children s last day is Wednesday, June 15th with their family picnics from 11:30am 12:00 pm as well. We have had a wonderful year helping the children learn and grow! Summer School Begins! We are looking forward to a wonderful summer with many new and exciting experiences as summer school begins at the preschool on June 21st. The children should dress in play clothes, closed-toe shoes (crocks are okay for summer) and lather up in sun block! Every Thursday the children can wear a bathing suit under their clothes and bring a towel. The summer school schedule is below: Week 1 June GOING ON A SAFARI! Week 2 June DINOSAUR DIG EXCAVATION! 6 The FVUMC Family Communique Annual Conference: June The California-Pacific Annual Conference will convene at the University of Redlands on June 16 th. Pastor Glen, along with our lay member, Karen Olson, will be in attendance. Our church will also be represented by Dennis Olson, who will go as the South District President of United Methodist Men. Pray for annual conference. It is always a difficult time, but one in which God is still able to accomplish much! VBS Is Coming! July & Aug Last year's neighborhood VBS was a great success! In 2015, we took VBS to the streets. Kids from the Murdy Park neighborhood invited their friends and neighbors for a week that changed lives. Over 80% of the children who attended this VBS were not regular church attenders. Three kids decided to follow Christ for the very first time and five of them are now attending church with us nearly every week! It's time to do it again, but even bigger. This year, elementary aged kids will claim Murdy Park in Huntington Beach for Christ July 11-15, 3pm-5pm. Three year olds through kindergarten will make their home in our pre-school classrooms August am-11:30am. We need your support whether it's presence or prayer before and during this important week. Our prayer is that kids would come to know their loving Creator and that we would be able to walk along side parents as they disciple their kids for life. 6
