2 Sometimes we in the church are like that middle school band, unsure of our parts, tentative in our roles, reluctant to trumpet forth the music of faith that God desires of us. And that's because we have trouble deciding what's most important. Christians live in community. It is a gift from God. Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, It is true, of course, that what is an unspeakable gift of God for the lonely individual is easily disregarded and trodden under foot by those who have the gift every day. It is easily forgotten that the fellowship of Christian brethren is a gift of grace, a gift of the Kingdom of God... What a beautiful visible gift God has bestowed upon us to pray together, to be comforted by others, to rejoice with friends when we feel like celebrating life, and to have a listening ear near us when we need to be heard. Christianity gives us a unique family where our fellowship is founded on the love of God. God has bound us together in one body long before we entered into a common life with one another and we are so thankful for this blessing. Celebrate this family that God has given to us. Tell someone how much they mean to you, lift them up in prayer asking the Spirit of God to surround and guide them on their journey. Lift up our church embracing the Christian fellowship God has put right in front of us. It is one blessing that we never need to forget. Blessings, Rev. Brenda Dowell I remember an incident on a hot summer afternoon outside a shopping mall. A friend and I saw a young child in a car seat inside a locked car, in a sleeping posture. Where was the mother? How is the child? She would not rouse to our yelling and beating on the window. It seemed to me a life and death situation. What to do? Mall security arrived. Immediately the opposite side window was smashed to get to the child. She was ok. Were we heroes? Not so. The mother soon arrived and was mad because the window had to be broken. She was just inside a store to exchange clothing. I thought to myself, What s more important this child or a window?' Most of the choices we make in life are not between what is trivial and what is important. Rather, most of the choices we make are usually between what is important and what is more important. Sunday by Sunday come to hear and receive what is most important God s everlasting love in Jesus. Don 2 11
3 Continuing Prayers Chris Combs (Jenny Compton s grandmother), Aileen and Tom Fugate, Sherran Key and Blenda Norman (Velma Bradford s daughters), Joanne Stansberry, Tom Johnson (husband of Cindy Best Johnson), Maci Smith (granddaughter of Jeff and Cindy Tallent); Kenny Higgins, Larry Banner. A middle school music teacher had just organized a band in her school. The principal was so proud of the music teacher's efforts that without consulting her he decided that the band should give a concert for the entire school. The music teacher wasn't so sure her young musicians were ready to give a concert, so she tried to talk the principal out of holding the concert, to no avail. Just before the concert was ready to begin, as the music teacher stood on the podium, she leaned forward and whispered to her nervous musicians, "If you're not sure of your part, just pretend to play." And with that, she stepped back, lifted her baton and with a great flourish brought it down. Lo and behold, nothing happened! The band brought forth a resounding silence. Prayers for those with recent surgeries and health needs: Jerry Manley, P.W. Rose (father of Christie Cook), Joe Lentz, George Seal (father of Scarlet Walker), Marge Fleck, Cinnie Offutt, Libby Price (Betty Wallace s mother), Louis Nickle, Gary Dixon (Mary Dixon s son), Bob Vandiver, and Julius Deaton s parents. Continuing Care Lola Corrier, Mary Dixon, Marcetta DeLong (Cindy Bell s mother), Mary Heimbaugh, Verna Kitts (Suzie Hazlewood s mother), Nancy Wallace, Sue Woods. In the Military Mathew Chesney, Tim George, Wayne Houser, James Raxter, Ryan Witzak. In Sympathy Sympathy is expressed to Ann Tockstein the death of her brother, Bill Hanna, of Kinmundy, Illinois, on January 9. Sympathy is expressed to Kim Deaton,in the death of her step-father, Bill Clark, of Pinehurst, North Carolina. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, January 30, in Pinehurst. Sympathy is expressed to Bruce Vo and family in the death of his father, Nguyen Van Vo, on January
4 4 Before they become Husband and Wife Let's shower them with things For their new life! Please join us for a Bridal Shower honoring Sarah Freel and Andy Bunch on Sunday, February 1, immediately following the Bridge Worship Service in Fowler Hall. A light lunch will be served. The happy couple will tie the knot on February 21 and are registered at Kohl's. We hope you will join us in showering Sarah and Andy (Liz and Bob Seaman) For our January meeting we had a delightful trip back to the "50's" thanks to Linda Williams and Richard Johnson. It brought back a lot of memories. We always appreciate it when some of our members share with us. A great big thanks to Linda and Richard. For our meeting on February 19, 2015 our speaker is Sam Venable (Venob) from The News Sentinel. Many of us have enjoyed his columns for many years and are looking forward to hearing him speak. Hope to see you at 10:45! The Youth of Trinity will be going to Winter Jam on February 13. The cost is $10. We will meet at the church at 5:30 p.m. The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the Christian Concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Come Jam out with us! Don t miss it! Contact Rev. Brenda Dowell for more information. 9 The children of Trinity UMC will be going to Lazer Tag on February 8 right after the Bridge worship service. We will eat lunch at the church and then head out for an afternoon of fun. The cost is $14. Siblings are invited to attend too. The Training Session for all Church teachers of children/ youth and Extended Care volunteers at Trinity has been changed to February 22 immediately following the Bridge worship service. Parents are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided. We will be discussing Safe Sanctuary, Behavior guidelines, and different techniques of Discipline. I really need all Church Teachers and Extended Care volunteers who work with our children and youth to attend this meeting. Contact Rev. Brenda Dowell for more information.
5 Family Leisure and Activities WINTER JAM, February 13, 2015, 7:00 p.m. (Tonya Jelf) Our Ash Wednesday service will be on February 18 at 6:30 p.m. Come take part of this service as we prepare our hearts for the Season of Lent. The youth and children will have Valentine s Parties on Wednesday, February 11, right after dinner. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m. The parties will begin at 6:30 p.m. Don t miss it. We are going to have a great time. February 8 is Boy Scout Sunday. Come to this special service where we recognize our scouts. Show them your support by attending. We are so proud of their accomplishments. For more information contact Scott Newby. As your new Family Leisure and Activities person, I would like us to start the year off right. Please let me know what family activities you would like to see at Trinity. Our goal is one a month if not more. My ideas include: sock hops, family lock-ins, $2.50 movie nights, walks, hikes, riding go-carts, going to the park, and special events. All events will be church family friendly!!! Our first event: WINTER JAM is on February 13, 2015, at 7:00 p.m., at Thompson-Boling Arena. What better way to celebrate LOVE for Valentine's than to do so with your CHURCH FAMILY??!! Ten Christian bands for TEN bucks, really!!! Devotional time, too!! Cash at the door. God is good all the time and all the time God is good!! Who is going with me? We always sit in the Mezzanine section right next to the leather seats (not the box seats) so that you are close but you can still hear afterwards. Plus, it is close to both concessions and bathrooms. We go in the door closest to the Communication Building and literally go across the hall to the mezzanine section so we are easy to find for those that must come late or after it starts. For those brave enough, you can stand in line with me at 5:30 p.m. (Doors open at 6:00 p.m.) We will save as many seats as we can but get there as soon as you can. We will coordinate the usage of church vans if needed, as you do have to pay for parking. Please me at thatjelfgirl@yahoo.com if you are interested or have questions. Looking forward to our first event in 2015! Thanks, Tanya 8 5
