3 Fourth Sunday of Easter Stewardship Reflection May 7, 2017 Shepherds and sheep were so much a part of life for Jesus and those from Galilee. Galilee was, after all, largely a rural area and raising sheep and sheepherding was an intricate part of their lives. That is why the image of a shepherd with his sheep was so often used during biblical times. It was a connection with which people could identify. It is equally important for us today to understand this important cultural connection for them. Shepherding was all about feeding the lambs and the sheep (recall that Jesus tells Peter Feed my sheep. ), bringing them to good pasture lands and water ( The Lord is my shepherd He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters; he restores my soul. ); going after lost lambs ( Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? ); and protects the sheep in the field and the fold ( The watchman opens the gate, and the sheep listen to his voice. ) Our Gospel reading today comes from St. John 10: In St. John 10: 11, the next verse, Christ declares I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. As Catholics and Christians, we, too, are called to be Good Shepherds to all those with whom we come in contact. It may be from another culture than ours, but we should understand full well the implications of that. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. Frequently I have heard our needy brothers and sisters say, "I have called/visited seven or eight churches/organizations and heard the words 'we have no funds.' St. John Church are the only ones who are willing to listen, understand, and help." These are a few examples of how your sacrificial giving has been used to bring hope, light, and new life to others: When I was trapped in an abusive situation you helped to set me free and give me a second chance. When we were tired, hungry, and exhausted from working in the fields, you brought us fans, food, clothing, and hygiene items to comfort and soothe our aching bodies. When I was ill for four days, my employment was terminated, then I, my wife, and two young children were evicted, you helped me find shelter and brought hope back into my life. (He now has a new job.) When my wife and I were stranded in Valdosta after caring for our son, a college student on a full athletic scholarship, who had developed an addictive disease, you helped us get home so that I could maintain my job. After discovering my son's disease, we had encountered several unanticipated expenses (e.g., plane tickets, automobile repairs) and without your help, we would not have been able to make it home in time for me to report to work when I was scheduled. When my wife and I lived in a car for a month you, through your assistance, restored our faith in humanity. "...whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." 6 The St. John Parish Pastoral Council is preparing for its annual election on May 13/14. Under the leadership of the Pastor, the purpose of the Pastoral Council is to help identify, plan and implement the spiritual needs of the parish. The Pastoral Council is also in dialogue with the Parish Finance Council concerning temporal needs of the parish. There are 3 positions available on the council you will be voting for 3 out of the 4 candidates. Please prayerfully consider each candidate and be prepared to cast your ballot on the weekend of May 13/14. Ushers and greeters will have ballots available as you arrive for Mass. Each adult parishioner may cast one ballot. Please put your ballot in the basket during offertory. If you will be away the weekend of voting, please stop by the church office the week before elections. Dr. Kelly Gamble is an Assistant Professor of Accounting in the Langdale College of Business Administration at Valdosta State University. She is originally from New England, but has lived in the south since Dr. Gamble is a graduate of Boston University, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida State University. Before moving to Valdosta in 2014, Dr. Gamble was an active member of St. Joseph s Catholic Church in Huntsville, AL. Her service at St. Joseph s included: St. Joseph s Parish Council, the adult education ministry; and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary. Since joining St. John s, she has been active with the greeting ministry; the Council of Catholic Women; the adult education team; and the Black Catholic Ministry. Heidi Gonzalez has lived in Valdosta and been a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for more than twenty years. She graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in She now teaches nursing at VSU s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Heidi is in the final stages of writing her dissertation to complete her doctoral degree in educational leadership. She and husband Tom have three sons Tristan 19, Julian 15, and Lleyton 12 - who serve as altar boys for the noon mass. Heidi is an active member of the parish and serves as lector. Heidi understands the Parish Pastoral Council is a significant way for parishioners to be involved in the future of our parish life and various missions in our community. She would like to serve on the parish council to develop a deeper understanding of the needs and goals of our parish. Laura Hanna is a life-long parishioner of St. John, a St. Francis Center volunteer, and a lector. Laura works as an instructor and advisor at Valdosta State University's Honors College. She has also taught at other institutions, including Auburn University, where she earned her Master's degree in literature. Laura will finish coursework for her doctoral degree in education this July and will begin writing her dissertation in the fall. Her dissertation research focuses on increasing the number of minority students in the VSU Honors College, a social justice topic that intersects with Laura's desire to use her time and talent to help others. Laura is excited about increasing her involvement in the Church through service and fellowship. Hello my name is Jessie Kalinowski. I was born and raised in Waycross, GA by my mom and dad, Eddie and Michele Harris, there I attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church with my parents and 4 brothers until I moved to Valdosta in 2007 to attend VSU. I visited St. John's for several years with my aunt and uncle, Mary and Chris Williams, before I moved to Valdosta in 2007 and became an official member of the church in I met my husband, Cody Kalinowski, in 2008 and we were married by Father Dan at St. John's on October 17th, I have three beautiful children. Khloe (6) and Colton (5) both attend St. John Catholic School and I stay home with my youngest son, Colby (1). I am a photographer and portrait artist with Jessie K. Photography & Art. I love our parish and the people I come in contact with every time I am here. I am honored for your nomination. 6
