YOUNG AT HEART Potluck Supper The St. John Young at Heart Seniors Group will celebrate the New Year with a pot luck dinner on Thursday, January 19th at 5:30pm in the parish Center Conference Room. This would be a great time for more seniors age 55 + to consider joining this faith group. Bring a dish to share and together let s give thanks for our faith and fellowship as we begin the new year! Thanks to a very generous parishioner, we have been able to pay off the original Diocesan loan. In addition, we were able to pay a significant amount toward the new loan for our school roof and parish center remodeling projects. Our current Diocesan loan balance is $189, We also have a $200, line of credit related to the purchase of the new Newman Center which will be paid off when the old Newman Center is sold. We will continue to have a debt reduction collection on the first weekend of each month and your support of this collection is very much appreciated. As always, I am grateful for your prayers and the loving support you have shown me as your pastor. Fr. Please consider donating jackets, scarves, gloves, and sneakers to the needy of our community. These items may be placed in the container in the foyer of the church or in the trailer. This is the equivalent of two months rent and two months of phone bills! We resume serving on January 8th. As a reminder, the suggested minimum donation for one donut with one cup of coffee or one cup of lemonade is $1.00 Donut-loving small children may need supervision from parents. No cash on you for the donation basket? No problem! We will happily accept checks made out to Birthright of Valdosta. 6 THE YEAR OF MERCY On Saturday, January 14th Dr. Larry Hilgert, Deacon Drew Larkin, and Laurie Wallace, LMFT, will be facilitating a workshop based on the book "The Holy Year of Mercy", A Faith Sharing Guide. This will be an interactive workshop with coffee and light refreshments. It will begin at 9:30 and end at 11:30. Blessing of Homes For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all. 2 nd Chronicles 7:16 This year, beginning January 9th and continuing through January 22nd, priests and deacons will carry these words to parishioners homes when they offer the traditional Christmas blessings of homes. This is a wonderful way to ask God s blessing and protection on your home and loved ones for the coming year. Upon arrival at your home, the phrase 20-MCB-17, will be written in chalk above your door. The MCB is a reference to the Magi, whose traditional names are Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar. The priest or deacon will then read a short passage and prayers of blessing before sprinkling all the rooms of the home with holy water. Any sacramentals such as statues, rosaries, etc., will also be blessed at this time if you wish. It does not matter if you own a house, rent an apartment, or sleep in a hut, ask God to bless your home. This blessing can be done annually! It is a great way to teach your children and remind yourself that God is found not just in church but in the Christian home. Anticipating a large number of blessings, the priests and deacons will not be able to stay for refreshments or a meal. The whole visit should last only 15 minutes. All we ask is that the family be present, the television be turned off, and the pets put up. Call the church office to schedule a date and time, or sign the sheets provided after Mass in the vestibule. 6
