3 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 Dear Parishioners of St John the Evangelist, I would like to personally invite you all to the Ordination to the Priesthood on June 30th at 10:00 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Savannah. Deacon Chris Hassel and I will be ordained priests of our Diocese of Savannah. Your parish has been such a big part of my formation, not only giving confirmation to God's call to the priesthood, but also motivating me to want to give myself more fully to this life after witnessing the charity and the effectivity of God's work in this community. Thus, I encourage those of you who are able to come to attend the ordination. Ordinations are a beautiful part of our Catholic heritage and are filled with powerful symbolism; Savannah is also not a bad place to spend a Saturday. I hope to see many of you there and I hope to celebrate Mass at St. John in the near future. Thank you all once again for all of your support and know that I am praying for you all here during my last days in Rome. In Christ, Dcn. For more information call the church office at SUMMER READING FOR YOUTH The Young People s Book of Saints. (age 8 and up). Saints are the men and women who best love Christ and His Church. They may be kings or queens, statesmen or soldiers, scholars, visionaries, workmen or beggars. They teach us the real meaning of human history, and they show us how to live in any walk of life or set of circumstances. Included in this anthology are famous saints Francis of Assisi, Dominic, Joan of Arc, Ignatius of Loyola, Teresa of Avila but also more obscure ones, such as Raymond Lull and Hugh of Lincoln. Many of these saints were martyrs, killed in periods of persecution. Others died trying to bring the knowledge of Christ to pagan tribes. Yet others built up the Church through their example and their teaching, but were never called upon to shed their blood. These beautifully written stories follow one from another, linked through time in such a way that the reader easily obtains a vivid picture of the sweep of history, the history of Christendom as it unfolds in the lives of individual men and women right up to modern times, with the first citizen of the United States to be pronounced a saint, Mother Cabrini. Every saint is different, every one a unique personality. Each of them finds his vocation and destiny in a different way teaching us that God has in mind for you and me a very special adventure that will be all our own. The purpose of our lives is to find that mission that only we can fulfill in the body of the Church, for the love of God and our neighbor. (Available through Amazon) 5

7 ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is not something new. It is a centuries-old practice rooted in an essential teaching of Catholic Christianity: Jesus Christ is truly and completely present in the Eucharist. Like many practices of our faith, however, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament developed gradually. In the earliest years of Christianity, consecrated bread would be brought home from the celebration of the Eucharist to be given to those not able to be present at the liturgy because of illness. It was also to be consumed by the faithful during the week to keep them connected to the Eucharist and the community they celebrated with. In about the fourth century monasteries began to reserve the Eucharist, and by the 11th century, reservation still mainly for the sick and dying was a regular feature of churches. While reverence was certainly given to Christ present in the sacrament, it was not yet customary to pray before the reserved sacrament. In the 11th century the French monk Berengar of Tours began to teach that the bread and wine in the celebration of the Eucharist could not change physically into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Pope Gregory VII demanded a retraction from Berengar saying that the body and blood of Christ were truly present in the Eucharist. This resulted in a refining of the church s teaching on the real presence. In response, eucharistic devotion burst forth throughout Europe: processions, visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and other prayers focused on the reserved sacrament became part of Catholic life. Around the same time, elevations of the bread and the wine were added to the eucharistic prayer at Mass. For some, the moment of seeing the consecrated host overshadowed the rest of the liturgy. Times of extended exposition of the Blessed Sacrament outside the Mass grew out of this action, and eventually a blessing with the exposed Eucharist, or benediction, developed. The feast of Corpus Christi developed in the 13th and 14th centuries. Processions became traditional on this day, and other devotions, including adoration, gained popularity. Eucharistic Congresses, held since the late 19th century (most recently in Canada in 2008), continue to promote this devotion. Since the Second Vatican Council, a great deal of attention has focused on the reform of the liturgy and a deepening of eucharistic theology and piety, but the practice of adoration remained in many places. Like the practice of the earliest Christians, adoration can keep us connected to the community s celebration of the Eucharist. Our parish offers adoration on Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 5:40pm and on Sunday from 3:00 4:00pm in the St. Joseph Chapel. On the first Tuesday of each month we offer adoration in a bilingual praise and worship format from 7:00-8:00pm everyone is welcome! This coming week there will be additional opportunities for adoration: Monday: (6/11) 7:00 8:30am, Tuesday (6/12) and Wednesday (6/13) 6:30-8:00am St. Jospeh Chapel (located at church office) 7
