3 Third Sunday of Easter A word from the Stewardship Committee April 30, 2017 Dear Fellow Parishioners, On behalf of our pastor, Fr. Brian LaBurt, we the Stewardship Committee are requesting your support of the Bishop s Annual Appeal (BAA). The theme this year is Our Return to the Lord. We ask you to prayerfully consider the many ways this appeal benefits our parish and all Catholics throughout the Diocese of Savannah. Our parish, St. John the Evangelist, is one of 55 parishes in the Diocese of Savannah. The word Catholic denotes "universal". Our parish is, therefore, a part of a Universal Church which should have our support as good Catholic stewards. A faithful Catholic steward will contribute their time, talent, and treasure to support their parish. In giving of our treasure, a steward should strive to donate the biblical based 10% of your income. Of that income, it is suggested 5% be given directly to your parish church, 1% to the diocese in which your parish resides and the other 4% would be allocated to various charities or non-profit organizations of your choosing. The BAA gives direct financial aid to mission parishes that cannot fully support themselves. Our diocese has a total of 24 missions and mission stations that benefit from this appeal. As a mission diocese, one of the main goals is to continue to develop and propagate the Catholic faith. In addition, the BAA also helps to fund ministries such as Catholic Social Services, Youth Ministry, Hispanic Ministry, and the Vocations Office which provides recruitment and education of seminarians to secure diocesan priests for the present and future. Our parish needs your support of the BAA. All gifts both large and small are of great importance for us to attain our goal. So far, this year, only 16.34% of our parishioners have contributed. To hit our target goal of $81, we need everyone to participate. Please make your offering in an envelope marked "Bishop's Annual Appeal" found in the vestibule of the church, or call the church office for further information. We are grateful to those who have already participated. Again, please remember all gifts are are appreciated. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. The Stewardship Committee Welcome Reception for New Catholics The reception will be Sunday, April 30 from 10:30-11:00 AM in the Parish Center (with Coffee & Donuts). Parents must register and pay on-line to guarantee a spot for their child/children. Volunteers are also needed to make this a successful week. Students in grades 7 and up are eligible to help in many areas. We also need adults to help in different capacities. All adults, 18 and older, must be VIRTUS trained. Proceeds from this bake sale will benefit our adopted Seminarian, Will Cook. 4

5 The St. John Parish Pastoral Council is preparing for its annual election on May 13/14. Under the leadership of the Pastor, the purpose of the Pastoral Council is to help identify, plan and implement the spiritual needs of the parish. The Pastoral Council is also in dialogue with the Parish Finance Council concerning temporal needs of the parish. There are 3 positions available on the council you will be voting for 3 out of the 4 candidates. Please prayerfully consider each candidate and be prepared to cast your ballot in a couple of weeks. Dr. Kelly Gamble is an Assistant Professor of Accounting in the Langdale College of Business Administration at Valdosta State University. She is originally from New England, but has lived in the south since Dr. Gamble is a graduate of Boston University, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida State University. Before to moving to Valdosta in 2014, Dr. Gamble was an active member of St. Joseph s Catholic Church in Huntsville, AL. Her service at St. Joseph s included: St. Joseph s Parish Council, the adult education ministry; and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary. Since joining St. John s, she has been active with the greeting ministry; the Council of Catholic Women; the adult education team; and the Black Catholic Ministry. Heidi Gonzalez has lived in Valdosta and been a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church for more than twenty years. She graduated from Valdosta State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in She now teaches nursing at VSU s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Heidi is in the final stages of writing her dissertation to complete her doctoral degree in educational leadership. She and husband Tom have three sons Tristan 19, Julian 15, and Lleyton 12 - who serve as altar boys for the noon mass. Heidi is an active member of the parish and serves as lector. Heidi understands the Parish Pastoral Council is a significant way for parishioners to be involved in the future of our parish life and various missions in our community. She would like to serve on the parish council to develop a deeper understanding of the needs and goals of our parish. Laura Hanna is a life-long parishioner of Saint John's, a Saint Francis Center volunteer, and a lector. Laura works as an instructor and advisor at Valdosta State University's Honors College. She has also taught at other institutions, including Auburn University, where she earned her Master's degree in literature. Laura will finish coursework for her doctoral degree in education this July and will begin writing her dissertation in the fall. Her dissertation research focuses on increasing the number of minority students in the VSU Honors College, a social justice topic that intersects with Laura's desire to use her time and talent to help others. Laura is excited about increasing her involvement in the Church through service and fellowship. Hello my name is Jessie Kalinowski. I was born and raised in Waycross, GA by my mom and dad, Eddie and Michele Harris, there I attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church with my parents and 4 brothers until I moved to Valdosta in 2007 to attend VSU. I visited St. John's for several years with my aunt and uncle, Mary and Chris Williams, before I moved to Valdosta in 2007 and became an official member of the church in I met my husband, Cody Kalinowski, in 2008 and we were married by Father Dan at St. John's on October 17th, I have three beautiful children. Khloe (6) and Colton (5) both attend St. John Catholic School and I stay home with my youngest son, Colby (1). I am a photographer and portrait artist with Jessie K. Photography & Art. I love our parish and the people I come in contact with every time I am here. I am honored for your nomination. 5

7 Wanted: Your Old" Memories Mrs. Pam Rickman, middle-school social-studies teacher at St. John School, is looking for volunteers to be interviewed by eighth-grade students to wrap up their study of U.S. and Georgia history for the year. She is especially interested in including those who can share their personal memories about World War II, the 1950s and Cold War, the wars in Korea and Vietnam, integration and the Civil Rights Movement, and the 1970s. Target date for these interviews is May 11. What does it do? The seventh-grade students at St. John School have researched a number of Catholic Relief Services programs operating in Africa. They have learned how CRS partners with local communities to empower them to resolve environmental, financial, and health challenges.
