3 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Stewardship Reflection on Lectionary Readings July 24, 2016 St. Paul advised us to pray constantly. In Today s Gospel, Jesus in effect tells us the same thing. It is difficult for us to underestimate the power of prayer. An active and consistent prayer life is a key factor in being a good steward. St. Teresa of Avila had this to say about prayer: The most potent and acceptable prayer is the prayer that leaves the best effects. I do not mean it must immediately fill the soul with desire The best effects are those which are followed by actions when the soul not only desires the honor of God, but really strives for it. Her point is that prayer requires action. That is the same conclusion we might draw about stewardship as a way of life. Adding the phrase as a way of life implies that it is more than an attitude. It is something that should fill every moment of every day for us. That is what Jesus is trying to communicate to us that we must be consistent and persevere in prayer. Our lives should reflect our ongoing prayer. You might say how we live our lives is a living prayer. That is what the Lord wants from us. As the Lord advises us, Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Stewardship Reflection on Lectionary Readings Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc. Protecting Our Youth safe environment training Diocesan policy requires that all adult employees and volunteers (18 and older) who minister to or come in contact with the youth of our diocese and parish on a regular basis attend VIRTUS Safe Environment Awareness Training. This training includes a background check and signing a Code of Conduct. Ministry Leaders should ensure that the volunteers in their program are in compliance. This compliance is required for the following: Ordained clergy, Deacons, Seminarians and Religious, pastoral assistants, church staff, maintenance employees and volunteers, school faculty, staff and coaches, school parents who volunteer and chaperone field trips, Ushers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Adult Altar Servers and/or leaders, Boy/Girl Scout volunteers, youth ministry leaders and volunteers, Religious Education and Vacation Bible School volunteers, social services volunteers, and any other adult the pastor or school principal identifies for compliance. The next VIRTUS training session scheduled here at St. John the Evangelist is on Saturday, August 6th at 9:00am in the Teacher s Lounge. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR YOUTH PRE-K4 THROUGH 8TH GRADE The new school year is just around the corner and August is almost here! Students in grades PreK-4 through 8th grade who do not attend the parish school should be registered with the parish program. Registration will take place on the weekends of July 24, 31 and August 7. You may also register during the week at the church office. CLASSES BEGIN ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 with a parent meeting in the church beginning at 10:45am. All parents and students are required to be present at this time. Catechists will be introduced and students will be dismissed with them to their classrooms. Parents will stay for an informational meeting with Fr. Brian and Susan Kramer (DRE). SACRAMENTS: Students will be eligible for enrollment in the Confirmation II class only if they have completed the previous year (Confirmation I) in our program (or a program at another parish). This policy also applies for First Holy Communion. A copy of your child s baptism certificate is required for sacramental records. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs. However there is a DATE CHANGE for the July meeting. Our next gathering will be on Thursday, July 28 th, in the Parish Center conference room at 4:00 p.m. We continue to invite more parishioners to participate! Our meetings begin with a half hour of meet & greet and light refreshments. So, don t worry about being right on time. Also, as extra fun this month, we are planning to go out to dinner at GG s Southern Kitchen after our meeting. Nothing fancy, but it will be delicious homestyle cooking and good company!
