3 December 16th, 2018 Third Sunday in Advent In Christianity, we hear often about the "Good News." We might often associate it with Jesus' compassion to the poor, his healings and miracles, and the salvation he won for us. In today's Gospel, we read of John the Baptist. "Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people." Yet as we examine the rest of the reading, we see examples of John's preaching. If you have two cloaks, give one away. Don't cheat others out of their money, extort, or lie. And, of course, the warning that the Messiah is on the move and "his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Merry Christmas? Not only do John's listeners enjoy his message, but they seem to think he might be the awaited Messiah! To understand today's Gospel, it's important to understand the Jewish people. For most of their history, God's chosen people had been under someone else's heel. They were slaves in Egypt. Their kingdoms were ravaged first by the Assyrians, then the Babylonians. Now they were under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Familiar with being strangers in a strange land, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, and enacting justice was incredibly important to them as a people. While John's words may seem odd or strong to our modern ears, this call to justice was welcome, even if it was directed at the listener. The truth is, no one is exempt from John's call to repentance. We all have further to go in the Christian life. We can all grow in virtue and love our neighbors more generously. The Church gives us the Advent season to examine our own hearts. Did any of John's warnings resonate with you? That could be a great thing to bring to Jesus this week! Stewardship of Treasure For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 4 WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: What is the Hispanic Advent custom of Las Posadas? Answer: Posada is the Spanish word for inn or lodging. Las Posadas refers to a traditional Advent custom in preparation for the birth of Jesus, beginning on December 16th. For nine successive evenings, groups reenact the search of Mary and Joseph for shelter in Bethlehem. Two children dress as Mary and Joseph, sometimes with Mary riding on an actual donkey. They are usually accompanied by children dressed as angels and shepherds along with the Wise Men. Adults accompany them as they process to designated homes, where they sing Christmas songs and request lodging. Part of the group enters the home and becomes the chorus that responds to the request for lodging. In the beginning, the request is rebuffed. They move to several more homes where the ritual is repeated. Eventually, at the last home, their need is recognized, and they all enter the home where a party ensues. This is repeated in different neighborhoods and homes each of the nine days. While this custom teaches children an important aspect of the Christmas story, it also emphasizes the need for hospitality to strangers and the continual need we all have to make room for Jesus in our "posada." As we struggle to arrive at a fair and just immigration policy, especially with Mexico, it would be good to recall the fact that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were also immigrants looking for a hospitable place to dwell. If you are new to the parish, welcome!!! If you would like to register Please feel free to call us or fill in the form below Name Address City Phone Address You can drop this off in the basket and we can follow up with you Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal 2018 The 2018 Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal is well underway. We have $18, already pledged. This is approximately 60% of our goal of $30, The outpouring of support from many parishioners like you helps sustain the important ministries across the Archdiocese of Newark. These programs help to make our own parish, St Elizabeth of Hungary a more vibrant place of worship. If you have yet to give, please pick up a pledge form at the back of the church or visit Thank you for your prayers and support, It is important for all of us to participate. Our parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. Preparation for Christmas is an important theme for Advent, but more is involved. Advent gives us a vision of our lives as Christians and shows us the possibilities of life. The vision of life that Advent gives us is twofold; it looks back to the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem, and it looks to the future when Christ will come again. In the interval between these two events we find meaning for our life as a Christian. First we celebrate Christbecomehuman. We view his life and experience his presence as a human being in our history. Christ came to show us what life can and should be. He gave us true and valid principles by which we can live true and valid lives. But Jesus knew that the human heart could not live in isolation. He formed the Church around the concept of a people held together by love. In that community we discover unlimited possibilities and meaning. Alone we can do nothing. Together we find real meaning. When Christ left this earth, he did not abandon us. He remains with us in his Spirit, the Church, the sacraments, the Scriptures and each other. He lives in community with us and keeps his vision of life before us. When Christ comes again, his presence will no longer be hidden behind the signs and symbols of the liturgy or the words of the Scriptures. His presence among us will be revealed in all its fullness, a presence that will never end, a presence that will perfect and complete our community. This is the "greater significance" of Advent. In these few short weeks we take in the sweeping panorama of time from Christ's birth to his Second Coming. The season of Advent brings us the magnificent vision of life and hope for the future given to us by Christ. Advent is our time to become more involved, more caught up in the meaning and the possibilities of life as a Christian community. Thus we are preparing not only for Christmas but also for Christ's Second Coming. This means that when he comes again, we will be awake and watchful. He will not find us asleep. A Little Catholic Humor ~ A Sunday school teacher asked the children just before she dismissed them to go to church, And why is it necessary to be quiet in church? Annie replied, Because people are sleeping.

5 Special Message to Families of RCAN Parishes Remember your deceased loved ones this Christmas season and join us at December s Mass of Remembrance at one of our Catholic Cemeteries (Mass schedule at Bring a personal, nonfragile tree ornament in memory of your loved one to help decorate the Christmas Tree of Remembrance following monthly Mass. Feeding the hungry is one of the seven Corporal Works of Mercy and performing this charitable act of loving kindness on behalf of a deceased loved one is a caring gift that truly honors the memory of the faithful departed in a tangible way. Let s keep Christ in Christmas and help feed the hungry this season. Thank you. Our Quarterly statement has arrived and our New amount has been deposited $48, as of November 2018 Thank you for your generosity The We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign continues to focus on strengthening our parishes while building a bright future for the entire Archdiocese we ask that you continue to pray for the success of this campaign both at your local parish, as well as at your neighboring parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Newark. Thank you for your consideration and your participation in this endeavor. Our goal is $450, to date we have $202, in pledges and $132, in collected donations. For those of you that are still thinking about your contribution you can call the office with any questions LINDEN FOOD PANTRY (LINCS) Over the last six months we have experienced a significant shortfall with regard to food availability from our main supplier "The Community Food Bank of NJ." As a result we have not been able to supply our clients with coffee, tea, canned corn, peanut butter, jelly, soups (all sizes, canned and dry), stuffing, turkey gravy, cranberry sauce and personal care items. As the holidays approach we are in dire need of these items. If you are able to donate any of these items, we would greatly appreciate it. Leave them in the baskets at the altar and we will pick them up each weekend in November and December. Thank you for your previous donations and may God bless you for your kindness and generosity. Just to keep you informed The major project that we shared with you since last year is finally getting closer. The Electrical wiring under ground that supports both the rectory and the church must be replaced. The conduit has rotted away causing water to flow along the wires, which results in brown outs. The electricians have moved into phase one, you will notice a new box outside of the Rectory. Another part of the mechanics will be done and then we wait for inspections. LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK This Gaudete Sunday calls us to rejoice because the Lord is near. Does your heart rejoice and sing, or are the pressures and burdens of life weighing you down? We can easily become overwhelmed. The weaknesses and sins of life, indeed our own weakness and sin, eat away at the joy and hope God wants us to know. Those who are grounded in their faith and possess deep spiritual lives know that God is near. Realizing this puts life into perspective. We really want to be free from our burdens but do not always know how to achieve this. We keep stumbling and falling. Advent is a time when we can learn to "do life differently," just like John the Baptist instructed the crowds. Joy and hope are the gifts God offers, not anxiety and despair. The Centennial Plaza In the vestibule please find forms, if you are interested in memorializing a loved one, remembering your family or just wishing St Elizabeth well. There are pavers, two lampposts and benches. The form will allow you to inscribe in the spaces for proper printing. The costs are as follows: Pavers are $ Lamppost are $2, ~ Benches will be $3, Please call the rectory if you have any questions
