3 Pastor s Corner December 20th h 2015 As we approach the Fourth Sunday of Advent we are delighted to hear the story of Mary the Virgin Mother traveling and meeting with St Elizabeth the Mother of John the Baptist. It is appropriate that we are reminded of Mary s stewardship before she gives birth to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mary is the epitome of stewardship: After Jesus, it is the Blessed Virgin Mary who by example most perfectly teaches the meaning of discipleship and stewardship in their fullest sense she was called and gifted by God; she responded generously, creatively and prudently; she understood her divinely assigned role in terms of service and fidelity. As we complete our preparations for the coming of the Lord at Christmas, we need to consider Mary s total trust in God and her willingness to place her entire life at His service, and ours. If we can even be a fraction of the steward she was, we will be ready for Christ s coming and better prepared to be disciples and good stewards. In the midst of our joy and celebration at this holy time, we, too, must bear in mind that we are called and chosen. God is with us always! Fr. Ed Jocson Stewardship of Treasure Give and gifts will be given to you the measure with which you measure will in turn be measured out to you. 5 On December 8 th to November 20 th 2016 Pope Frances has declared a Year of MercY Indulgence Whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven Mt 16:39 In the spiritual realm everything belongs to everyone. There is no private property. The goods of others become mine and my goods belong to others This is what is intended by the expression treasure of the church and the merits of the saints. To ask for (an) Indulgence means to enter into communion of spiritual goods and put oneself at its disposition. (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) Pope Frances grants to the following persons the opportunity to receive a jubilees indulgence: Those who make a pilgrimage to a Door of Mercy in Rome or a Door of Mercy designated by the diocesan bishop, and who receive sacramental absolution and Communion within several days of the pilgrimage and offer a Profession of Faith and a prayer (our Father, Hail Mary, etc.) for the Pope s intentions. Those unable to enter a Door of Mercy particularly the sick and or the home bound and who unite their suffering to the Lord s Passion and if possible, receive Communion and attend Holy Mass or some community prayer, even if by means of radio or television. Those who are incarcerated who make a pilgrimage to their prison chapel or direct their thoughts and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell. And those who perform a spiritual or Corporal work of mercy during the Jubilee Year. The jubilee indulgence can be applied to oneself or for the deceased The SpiriTual WorkS of Mercy Counsel the doubtful Instruct the ignorant Admonish sinners Comfort the afflicted Forgive offenses Bear wrongs patiently Pray for the living and the Dead The Corporal Works of MerCy Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick Visit the imprisoned Bury the dead What is a Jubilee Year? Celebrating a jubilee every 50 years was an ancient Hebrew custom. It was a year of rest and restoration, when captives were set free, debts were paid and land was not sown or harvested. In the 1300 s the Catholic Church adopted the tradition of proclaiming a jubilee every 50 years to encourage people to return to a life of holiness. By the 1400 s a jubilee was proclaimed every 25 years so each generation could participate in the celebration. Our last ordinary jubilee took place during 2000, marking the second millennial anniversary of Christ s Birth. But there is also a Catholic tradition of proclaiming an extraordinary jubilee outside the 25 year cycle. Our last extraordinary Jubilees were held in 1933 and 1983, marking the 1900 th and the 1950 th anniversaries of Christ s death and resurrection. From the heart of the Trinity, from the depths of the mystery of God, the great river of mercy wells up and overflows unceasingly. It is a spring that will never run dry, no matter how many people draw from it. Every time someone is in need, he or she can approach it, because the mercy of God never ends. - Pope Francis A few weeks ago Father Ed spoke about your offerings to St Elizabeth Church. By now all of you should have received a letter in the mail. Thank you for responding it helps us a great deal. If you did not receive a letter perhaps you are not registered, being part of the community is a very big part of being Catholic, there is a sense of belonging and commitment. If you have not registered with the Parish or you are new to the parish welcome!!! Please feel free to call us or fill in the form below Name Address City Phone Address You can drop this off in the basket and we can follow up with you.
