God will save his people, and the blind will see, the deaf will hear, and the lame will walk. Streams will come forth in the desert, the sandy ground will become springs of water. Second Reading: James 2:1-5 James encourages the people to never show favoritism. He discusses an usher who escorted a rich man to the best seat, while ignoring a poor man. God chose poor people to be rich in faith, so we should never judge people by their riches. Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 Some people brought a deaf man who could not speak to Jesus and begged him to lay his hand on the man. Jesus opened the man s ears and cured his speech impediment. He ordered the people not to tell anyone, but they were too amazed to keep this to themselves. 3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: (September 5-6, 2015) While I am away, much progress has come into play. I am quite grateful on how many of the parishioners have said yes to our appeal. Our first week, we have collected $3, and in addition the office staff has been able to help clean up our files as well. In my talk and in the letter, I stated that we are in need of $8,500.00, and although we may have a few more expenses, we are almost half way collected. Many of you have expressed how happy you were to help. We are blessed to have parishioners that have moved away but still think of St Elizabeth as home and wanted to give.this week we were able to obtain the permits to go forward. As a pastor, I never knew there were so many steps to get one project done. I am hopeful that they will start shortly. In the readings today we learn of another miracle that Jesus performed, with a touch of his finger he made the deaf man hear and to top it off he would speak clearly. We can only imagine the feeling that man experienced to be freed from this ailment that outcast him his entire life. Brothers and sisters when we were Baptized, we too were touched with a finger and blessed, we too can have that experience and be freed, let us always remember that Jesus heals us every day if we let him. But unlike this story do not keep it a secret, tell everyone how you are touch by our Lord and continue to spread the word. We may never know when we have touched someone s life and help them to be freed. God is with us always! Fr. The process is one of inquiry, of evangelization, of prayers, of study and conversion leading to ones entrance in the church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The RCIA welcomes the unbaptized as well as those who have been baptized in another Christian tradition. The RCIA also welcomes those who have been baptized Catholic but who have not completed their sacraments through the Eucharist and Confirmation. The RCIA is a step by step journey highlighted with corresponding rituals celebrated within the Parish Community. 4 St E s Youth Group St. Elizabeth s Youth Ministry would like to invite youth in 8 th -12 th grade, to join Youth Ministry. The sessions are held Wednesday nights, from 730pm- 9pm, in the lower level of the church. Our mission is to enhance our youth s knowledge on the word of God and to learn more about themselves. CONTEMPORARY PRAISE We are looking for instrumentalists and singers to join our Contemporary Praise group for Sunday at noon mass starting on Sunday, September 27th. 5 Sharing god S BleSSing annual appeal Our Goal this year is $38, Currently we are at 53.3% $20, WE ARE OVER THE 50% MARK!! Help us make this happen Many of you are aware of the Appeal that we do every year through the Archdiocese. This appeal helps to support so many of the programs that we offer as Catholics. The seminarians, our youth, especially at our college level, churches and schools to do Capital improvements. And last but certainly not least, Catholic Charites, a program that helps the sick and the poor, isn t that what Pope Frances speaks about every day? Our goal is not big or too large, but it helps in a big way. Can you please consider giving to our Sharing God s Blessing Appeal so that you can make a big difference in a lot of people s lives? Although it saddens us to see the little ones get bigger, just think how you would be able to put a smile on someone face that is in need of help through Catholic Charites. This year after you wash their clothes, you can drop them off in our bin in the parking lot on your way to mass. Going to mass and doing something for the less fortunate; makes for a great day!! S HORTCOMINGS AND F A I T H Gospel: Mark 7:31-37 What kinds of shortcomings do people have? How do those shortcomings challenge people to grow? We all have 'em. Shortcomings. They can be physical, emotional, moral, behavioral, or mental. Most of us have several shortcomings. Some of these shortcomings are real. Others are imagined (they're only "real" when we compare them to other people). No matter. We will obsess, deny, and rationalize them. And we will spend money for relief from them. We'll do anything to alleviate them, to be free of them. Sometimes we call these shortcomings our "demons." In the time of Jesus, the ancients equated many of these shortcomings to demonic possession. Jesus freed a man from a real shortcoming, a demon, but did more than heal him. He allowed the man to hear and speak the truth. Jesus treated this healing as a demonic possession. He spat on the ground as a warning against evil spirits. Jesus freed the man from more than a physical ailment. He restored the man's moral character and social contacts. Jesus wanted discretion from the crowd because he would, in time, reveal the type of Messiah he was. He would also reveal the type of follower his Messiahood required. Is our praise of God for his benefit or ours? Do we pray and worship God to fulfill our needs alone? Or do we do it for his glory? Or do we praise God for both reasons? Sometimes our shortcomings are spiritual. We are people of faith, but our spiritual focus is upon the self. Many times we struggle between our immature "needs" and a real exercise in the Spirit's gifts. These shortcomings can lead us to discouragement ("church does not fulfill my needs anymore"). Or they can challenge us to grow. Through growth, we begin to listen and understand. Then, we can speak clearly. Our ears are no longer blocked. Our tongue is no longer held bound. Despite our shortcoming, Jesus will touch and call to us. And he will use these shortcomings to lead us to greater faith. Reflect on your own shortcomings. How do they affect your spiritual life? How do they challenge you to redouble your efforts in prayer and service?
