3 N 5, 2017 R "For they preach but they do not practice." The scribes and Pharisees may be the ones Jesus was speaking about in today's Gospel, but we must be careful not to dismiss his words when it comes to our own actions. Jesus offered a difficult challenge to those honorseekers that we must also heed when he said, "The greatest among you must be your servant." This is not the way the world usually works. Generally speaking, the idea of being a servant is considered inferior to being someone who has risen to high levels of leadership or status. But Jesus wants people in positions of authority to selflessly serve those over whom they have influence. And he insists that the leaders who establish laws, rules, and guidelines do not excuse themselves from following their own directives! "Practice what you preach," as the saying goes. Whether or not we have extensive public influence, almost all of us at certain points are in a position to exercise leadership with our children and families, with classmates, coworkers, neighbors, friends, and sometimes strangers. When these moments arise, we are called to step into this role without being hypocrites. It's important to be sure we don't issue unrealistic demands on others that we ourselves would find it burdensome or even impossible to fulfill. This requires the virtue of humility. Instead of reveling in the authority we may have at any given moment, instead of creating "heavy burdens hard to carry and laying them on people's shoulders," we need to be ready and willing to walk a mile in their shoes, and lead accordingly. And Jesus tells us clearly that this servant leadership will be rewarded, for "whoever humbles himself will be exalted." Stewardship of Treasure For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 4 All Saints Day We can all remember growing up and learning about saints, whether from our parents, grandparents or in catechism class. We were told that these people of faith were role models for us in our Christian journey. Even though they were real people, they always seemed to me to be larger than life. When I was younger I never thought I could become just like them. Now that I am older, I realize that we are all, in fact, called to be just like them. Holiness is not something reserved for those in a book of saints. It is the goal of all intentional disciples living as good stewards. However, it takes commitment to achieve holiness. It also requires us to live mindfully and be continually aware of how God is moving in our lives. You may never have thought about a stewardship way of life as a pathway to sainthood, but if you take the time to read the lives of saints you will see how these heroes truly cultivated the gifts God had given them and gave them back with increase to God. You will encounter stories of outreach to the poor, comforting the distressed, and befriending the lonely. And you will begin to see the parallel between what these great disciples did in their lives with the simple responses to God's call in your life. The Church may never formally canonize you, but there will be those whose paths you cross that will bear witness to the fact that at least for a moment they caught a glimpse of what could have been a living saint. I PLACE MUCH OF MY HOPE FOR THE FUTURE IN MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER. (Pope John Paul II) Our Holy Father invites all married couples to experience the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend, which is a fantastic gift of the Catholic Church Now that the kids are back in school and your calendar is full of their activities, where have you put time for your spouse and your Marriage Relationship? How about making some time to enrich your Marriage by attending a Marriage Encounter. It s a wonderful time to rekindle communication and enjoy a weekend away. Contact Mike and Janet Turco at or or njwwme@peoplepc.com for more information. LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK It is so easy to cast judgment upon the thoughts and behaviors of others. We have heard the phrase, "Practice what you preach." If we really believe in Jesus we will put great effort and care into following his example and living his message. Humility is our goal. True humility begins when I see myself as one among many wounded, searching souls who are striving to work out a place in life and discover who God is and how God acts. We are here today because we need to taste and feel the God who reveals himself fully in the Eucharist the God who is our strength, hope, and salvation. We are not here because we are better or wiser than anyone else for we are simply humble sinners in need of mercy. Sharing God Blessing Serving our Parishes Each year the Annual Appeal helps fund several essential ministries throughout the Archdiocese. Your generosity helps support our seminaries, our schools, Catholic Charities, as well as our retired priests, just to name a few. In addition to supporting these crucial programs and ministries, the Annual Appeal is also an opportunity for our parish to share in this effort s overall success. Once our parish has achieved its goal, 62% of gifts received above that amount will be returned to our parish. This funding can help our parish support our ministries, be used for capital expenses, or support any number of projects. Stewardship is what you do with what you have when you believe in God. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin Imagine how much good we could do for our parishes and those in need around the Archdiocese if we all did our part. Thank you for your prayerful consideration. To learn more about the programs and ministries supported by the Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal or to make an online gift, please visit Our Annual goals for 2017 $26, currently we have $ pledged. We are only $8, away from hitting our goal. The De Profundis Prayer for the deceased Every time De Profundis is recited, a partial indulgence is received. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord And let perpetual light shine upon them. BETHLEHEM HANDICRAFTS From the birthplace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Christian community is seeking your love and support through obtaining their handmade olive wood religious articles. These items will be displayed at the church after all masses next weekend on November 11 th and 12 th. Your help can and will make a difference in the lives of your brothers and sisters in Bethlehem
