1 On December 8 th to November 20 th 2016 Pope Frances has declared a Year of MercY Indulgence Whatever you bind on Earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven Mt 16:39 In the spiritual realm everything belongs to everyone. There is no private property. The goods of others become mine and my goods belong to others This is what is intended by the expression treasure of the church and the merits of the saints. To ask for (an) Indulgence means to enter into communion of spiritual goods and put oneself at its disposition. (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI) Pope Frances grants to the following persons the opportunity to receive a jubilees indulgence: Those who make a pilgrimage to a Door of Mercy in Rome or a Door of Mercy designated by the diocesan bishop, and who receive sacramental absolution and Communion within several days of the pilgrimage and offer a Profession of Faith and a prayer (our Father, Hail Mary, etc.) for the Pope s intentions. Those unable to enter a Door of Mercy particularly the sick and or the home bound and who unite their suffering to the Lord s Passion and if possible, receive Communion and attend Holy Mass or some community prayer, even if by means of radio or television. Those who are incarcerated who make a pilgrimage to their prison chapel or direct their thoughts and prayer to the Father each time they cross the threshold of their cell. Pope Frances asks each of us to celebrate by showing to others the mercy that God constantly extends to all of us. Each week examples will be displayed below: Contemplate Mercy The motto for the jubilee year will be Merciful like the Father. By contemplating mercy, we begin to see how God gives himself to us and asks nothing in return. Because we are touched by God s Mercy, we can be merciful towards others. Doors of Mercy Archbishop has designated six other Archdiocesan Parishes and Shrines as Pilgrim Churches. Each of these Pilgrim Churches will enable the faithful to gain a Plenary Indulgence under the same conditions as those at the Cathederal Basilica. The Pilgrim Churches are: Saint Francis Xavier, Newark Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, Linden Divine Mercy, Rahway Our Lady of Mercy, Park Ridge Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Wallington Our Lady of Mercy, Jersey City Earlier this year Father Ed spoke about your offerings to St. Elizabeth Church. The Lord then tells his servant that he was formed to be a light for the nations. Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Peter speaks to a group of pagans for the first time. He explains to them that any person who follows God s will is acceptable to God, regardless of nationality. Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, John the Baptist had claimed one would come far more powerful than himself, one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit rather than water. When Jesus came to John and was baptized, the Spirit descended on him and a Welcome to the Family Baptisms are performed on all Sundays except for the second week of the Month. 5 Pastor s Corner January 10th, 2016 This Sunday is the Baptism of the Lord and it brings us to the close of the Christmas season. Jesus was baptized to show us that he was put on earth in human form like us and we are to be like him. Luke brings forward in this Gospel that God answers him while he is praying. This has significant meaning,for while Jesus was praying (not while he was under water) did God come forward and announce that You are my son and I am pleased with you.. This reflected Luke s emphasis not on historical event, but upon the revelation of it s importance. It was not when an event happens to me ; it is the moment I get it, that we should make the connection. For Luke, prayer was the time of revelation and insight; he portrayed Jesus in prayer before the major decisions of his ministry. Prayer was the time for grace, God with us. When do you realize times of grace? How has your prayer time given you those graced moments? Brother and sisters lets take time our of our daily lives and make our prayer time more meaningful. 6 Youth Ministry would like to invite youth in 8 th - 12 th grades, to join. The sessions are held Wednesday nights, 7:30pm in the lower level of the church. Our mission is to enhance our youth s knowledge on the word of God, promote friendship, bring out the talents of each and to learn more about themselves. We want the youth to know we care about their well-being and that the church is a safe place to go. Youth Ministry has gone to Dorney Park, Red Bulls soccer game, organized activities at Linden s Street Festival, hosted Bingo at Delaire, and went apple/pumpkin picking Our most recent project is that we are making sandwiches for the Elijah Promise. Calling all Men and WoMen Women s Commission Day of Reflection February 27th, 2016 Men s Conference March 5th, 2016 Seton Hall 8:00 am 1:00 PM Saint John the Apostle will again sponsor a bus to the March for Life on January 22, 2016, the Anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision of the US Supreme Court that legalized abortion on demand in the US. The bus is free. You are welcome to send a free will offering to the Rectory if your means allow. We will meet for Mass at 6:30 am and depart immediately after. The bus will drop off and pick up at the Renaissance Hotel for those who wish to March. The Hotel is a short walk to the National Mall where the March for Life begins. The bus will also drop off and pick up at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception for those who wish to be present and pray.
