3 Dear Parishioners, PASTOR SCORNER JULY 3RD, 2016 "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest." Can we be counted among the laborers? Are we ready and willing to work for the sake of our faith, or are we looking for the easy way out? Our faith is more than a personal experience. It's more than a routine that fits into our weekly schedule. Our faith is meant to be shared with others, even when that requires a bit of work on our part. In today's Gospel, Jesus calls his followers to "Go on your way," to prepare people for the Lord. And we are called to do the same. We are meant to go on our way--out of our homes, and even out of our churches--to share the good news of the Gospel and to serve those in need. It can be tempting to think, "I believe, I go to church, isn't that enough?" But Jesus tells us that there is an abundant harvest out there--countless people who may just need to know that Jesus loves them or that someone is willing to help. If we don't step up to the task then those people will miss out on that word of encouragement, that personal invitation to Mass, that act of kindness that might have made all the difference in their life. God may be calling some of us to an even deeper commitment--to be a lay minister in a parish or to discern a religious vocation, for example--but there is no doubt that God is calling all of us to labor for his kingdom in some way. This mission isn't for someone else. It's for us to carry out the work of the disciples because we are today's disciples. When we accept this mission, we will not only enjoy seeing the benefits that others receive, we will also rejoice with those whose "names are written in heaven." God is with us always! Fr. A Higher Power A Sunday School teacher said to her young students, "We have been learning about how powerful the kings and queens were in biblical times. But there is a higher power. Who can tell me what it is?" Tommy blurted out, "I know, Aces!" 4 Feed The Poor For many year here at St Elizabeth we have helped to feed the poor by making sandwiches. Donations come in to purchase the food, someone comes in and cuts the meat, the ladies( known as the sandwich ladies) come for an hour to 90 minutes to make the sandwiches and someone comes and picks them up and brings them to the food pantry. We have others that donate food and that goes along with our delivery. We are in desperate need of sandwich ladies. They come every other week on Tuesdays. Please call the rectory at and help this act of stewardship continue, Thanks Although we only experienced one bad storm this year we did not go unpunished. We discovered that the gutters and leaders on the side of the church going over the three alcoves and the confession booths had been damaged. One set came off completely. We put it into our insurance but received very little back. The gutters are copper and the flashing underneath should be copper as well. Apparently years ago it was replaced with aluminum. Over the years aluminum and copper do not mix, this caused more corrosion. The estimate came in at $9, This will replaced the flashing, the gutter and leaders with copper. However, while fixing they discovered more damage to the tile roof which will lead to another $4, If you can find it in your heart to help off set the cost it would be greatly appreciated. To date we have $4, in donations, thank you for your generosity! A Time to Relax Summertime is a time to relax. During this leisure time, would you be willing to go through your closets to get rid of all those unwanted heavy winter clothes and shoes which served you so well during the winter season? We will see the biblical production of Samson. The cost will be $115 per person. We have only 50 tickets reserved and it will be first come first serve. If the trip is not sold out byseptember 1st, it will be open to other parishes in the area. The bus will leave St. Elizabeth's at9amand return about9pm. 5 On December 8 th to November 20 th 2016 Pope Francis has declared a YEAR OF MERCY INDULGENCE This the year to become more merciful in our own lives and bring God s mercy to others. Doors of Mercy Archbishop has designated six other Archdiocesan Parishes and Shrines as Pilgrim Churches. Each of these Pilgrim Churches will enable the faithful to gain a Plenary Indulgence under the same conditions as those at the Cathedral Basilica. The Pilgrim Churches are: Saint Francis Xavier, Newark Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus, Linden Divine Mercy, Rahway Our Lady of Mercy, Park Ridge Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Wallington Our Lady of Mercy, Jersey City The We Are Living Stones Campaign will allow each of us to join our gifts with those who made the parishes and programs of this Archdiocese a reality in years past and will ensure that we remain a strong, vibrant and faithful Church in the years to come. We know that our greatest strength is our Catholic faith and the faith of our people. This campaign is centered primarily on the spiritual growth and development of our people s faith.
