I believe we all should learn to value the time we have and the things we have done or others have done for us. We need to become grateful.

It just means that we don t need to wait to the last moment to express our gratitude to those who have filled our lives with blessings.

2 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 16, 2017 The gift we received Pastor s Note I am convinced that everything we have and are is a gift and the Lord has given us time to use and share the gift we have received. It is up to us to value and cherish it. One of the gifts we cannot keep but we can use is time that occasionally seems to fly and if we are not careful can escape our hands. I believe we all should learn to value the time we have and the things we have done or others have done for us. We need to become grateful. It is with this concept in mind that I would like to express my gratitude for this 5 years in this parish. It doesn t mean I am leaving. It just means that we don t need to wait to the last moment to express our gratitude to those who have filled our lives with blessings. All of you my brothers and sisters are the way God has blessed my five years in this parish. I have try to serve you and use the time given to me, to enjoy your company, and to walk together in this life for the time the Lord has determined for us here at St. Martin. And I encourage you to do the same. Time, because of its nature, doesn t know pause. It continues even when we would like to stop it, and is not faster when we desire that things will be over. As time, we should never stop, but we should find the way that God will be always present because what is the time without its author, what is movement without the one who moves everything. While it is truth that we cannot stop time, we need to pause, stop what we are doing and to reflect about faith, life, family and friends And see how lucky we are. Because for us who believe time is not just the time in which we live, but more. It is in the time in which God out of time, and live in eternal present, wanted to bless our time with His presence that in fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday (Gal 4;4-5). Cathedral of Faith is another first-time partner In the Village House experience and could use some of our volunteer expertise and enthusiasm! 4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two Englishspeaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word Eucharist comes from the Greek for thanksgiving. For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. 8 Welcome Our new Director of Faith Formation Daniel Valcazar II Daniel joins the St. Martin of Tours community after completing his Master of Divinity degree at the Jesuit School of Theology (JST) in Berkeley. His experience of quality faith formation programming began when he was a member of the youth group at St. Mary s Parish in Gilroy. His formation continued at Bellarmine College Preparatory and then the University of San Diego (USD). After graduating from USD, Daniel served as an Alumni Volunteer at Bellarmine and then returned to USD for his Master of Business Administration where he was able to serve as a Resident Minister. During his two years as a Resident Minister his desire for a career as a professional minister was confirmed. Prior to pursuing his Master of Divinity at JST, Daniel served in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. His last assignment before JST involved managing multiple parishes throughout their diocesan capital campaigns. While this work was fulfilling in many respects, after completing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola, it became clear that Daniel s vocation was to work even more closely with people by joining them on their journey of faith. As the Director of Faith Formation, Daniel hopes to utilize his Ignatian spiritual formation, including training in the Spiritual Exercises, and over five years of experience in offices of ministry and formation from the secondary to the graduate level. As St. Martin continues to form people of faith committed to welcoming all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God, Daniel looks forward to supporting and enhancing the various offerings of formation in our Christian Faith. Daniel and his wife, Monica, will be celebrating six years of marriage this month and are expecting a Baby Girl in August! Please keep them and their growing family in your prayers.
