2 REFORMATION 500 Well, here we are. 500 years. One might say that it just seems like yesterday, and in a sense, they would be correct. 500 years may seem to be a long time in the context of a human lifetime, but in God s time it has been but the blink of an eye. If we pause to think about what was happening 500 years ago, we see a world ready for great change. Europe had come out of the dark ages, and the Renaissance was in its early stages. It was the rise of the age of reason and humanism; the belief that science and thought, rather than religion and superstition could explain the world. It was a time when the Western Church had tremendous power and influence and all of the corresponding corruption that comes with such great power. Church titles such as Bishop could be bought for the right price. Money was needed to fund extravagant projects, most notably St. Peters Basilica in Rome, and the church seemed more interested in itself, rather than its people. Out of all this came Martin Luther and the Reformation. But what about now? Phillis Tickle observed that the church goes through a great upheaval every 500 years, and we are due. We seem also to be going through a period of great change now as well in society and the world. Technology is moving at an extremely rapid pace, and the general feeling now is that there is no problem that technology cannot solve. The Church is changing too, with a rise in an emphasis on individual experience over tradition. What is right for me may not be right for you, and I certainly cannot tell you how or what to believe. Religion and faith have become largely internalized. This is vastly different from the Church in Luther s time which would decree belief from on high and excommunicate or kill those who dared disagree. Only time will tell how all this will play out. What I see is that the Church IS changing, and a lot of people don t necessarily like it. This is not surprising, as it is our nature to resist change. But change is inevitable. The way the Church works will certainly change, but God and God s promises do not. The Trinitarian God of Father, Christ, and the Spirit remain in control. Regardless of where the next 500 years take us, God s love for us in the self-giving of Jesus Christ has been, still is, and always will be, with us. 4 CHURCH HAPPENINGS AND UPCOMING EVENTS REFORMATION 500 ACTIVITIES In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation, Shepherd of the Sea will be holding several events. All during the month of October, we will be showing portions of the video This Changed Everything during faith formation at 9 am. We will be learning about how the Reformation changed the world and discussing what it means for us today. October 8 - We will be taking a van full to Goldsboro to worship and share a meal with other Lutherans from across Eastern NC in a Reformation Celebration. October 29 We celebrate the Reformation in worship and with a catered meal. We will also be confirming Adian Kimbrell, Trey Piccini, and Anthony Piccini. On Oct. 7 we will celebrate St. Francis, the patron saint of animals, by having a blessing of the animals at 10 am in the church parking lot. Bring your dog, cat, bird, or snake well, maybe not the snake for a blessing and a treat for your pet. 6 Missions of Grace MARTHA S MISSION VOLUNTEERS NEED FOR DINNER OF HOPE AND FELLOWSHIP Volunteers needed who would like to help serve a meal to the homeless at Hope Mission. June Boyette Doris Nelson The 2017 Food-A-Thon is going on now until December to collect food for Thanksgiving and Christmas when Martha s Mission gets very busy. They are collecting canned vegetables, canned fruits, peanut butter, jam & jellies, cooking oil, cereal, flour, sugar, and rice. They especially need extras for their goody bags: dressing mix, gravy, spaghetti and pasta sauce, canned meat, popcorn, cool aid, Jell-O, muffins, cake mix and frosting, cracker sets and personal items such as shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, pads, baby diapers and larger size 4 & 5 diapers. Cash donations are always welcome. Items can be dropped off at the church and put in the Martha s Mission basket in the Narthex. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER We are collecting old / used magazines for the Domestic Violence shelter. You can place your magazines in the basket in the Narthex.
