But do you know what was the second most popular subject was with Jesus? Was it a) Love, b) Money, c) Sin, d) None of the above? If you have been Lutheran for a while, you might be forgiven if you said Love. But the answer is actually, money. Jesus had a lot to say about money. How we handle it, what we do with it, what being a good steward looks like. As we approach the end of the year, we are once again confronted with the joy of working on our budget. (Kudos to Laurie Eudy for undertaking this thankless task!) We have been doing some great things this year in our community, none of which makes me more proud than the adoption of two refugee families from Columbia. In my conversations with Interfaith Refugee Ministries in New Bern about the job we have done, they have commented on how we are rock stars in their little corner of the world. This is the kind of life-altering ministry that is possible at Shepherd of the Sea! As we work on the budget for 2017, there will be a few items that will need to be increased. We would like to ask for some extra funds to be available this year for the 500th anniversary celebration of the Reformation. We would like to do a special Reformation themed vacation Bible school next summer, and of course we will continue to look for ways that we can be a positive influence in our community. We have found in the past that pledge cards don t always give us a true spending picture, since many do not fill them out and we get a fair percentage of our funds from visitors who are not members. What we are asking then, is to consider your church giving for Think about it, pray about it, and trust in God that we will be provided with what we need to continue the great things we are doing here on the Crystal Coast. 2 CHURCH HAPPENINGS AND UPCOMING EVENTS Giving for the year through August 2016 per family: Low giving: $0 High giving: $6400 Top 90% gave: $20 Top 75% gave: $55 Top 50% gave: $430 Top 25% gave: $1,095 Top 10% gave: $2,019 Avg. needed each month per family to fully fund our ministry: $150 Avg. received each month through August per family: $104 This means we are currently meeting 70% of our budget LET US KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON If you, or a loved one, or even a friend is hospitalized or deployed, please let the church office know so that we can pray or visit as needed. THE FELLOWSHIP HOUR Drop Off Month has been a great success. Thank you everyone who contributed cookies, cleaned coffee pots and tables or taken out trash. We will continue Drop Off every Sunday as long as there is cooperation and interest. If you would like to do a special coffee hours, please call Rosemary at REFORMATION DAY #499 Join us for the 499th Reformation Day celebration (minus 1 day) October 30. Enjoy worship, fellowship, and don t forget to wear red! ALTAR FLOWERS The order for the altar flowers will be placed the first of the month only! The sign up sheet for flowers is on the bulletin board. The cost is still $35.00 payable to the church. NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE The deadline for the November SeaNotes submission is October 26. Please call the office at or info@soselca.org to submit articles you wish to be included. REFORMATION BIBLE STUDY You are invited to explore some of the theology and background of the Reformation and how it relates to us today. Classes are held Sunday mornings at 9 am. This will be a discussion-focused class. People of all ages, middle school and up are invited to participate in this intergenerational study. CONFIRMATION CLASS Reminder that our next confirmation class will be held on October 23 after worship. 3 Missions of Grace STUFF THE TURKEY FOR MARTHA S MISSION Martha s Mission is gearing up for the holidays. Donations of stuffing, gravies, cranberry, broth, cake mixes & icings, cream of chicken/mushroom/ celery soups are needed. Of course, we will accept a turkey or ham as well! There is always a need for pasta, sauces, boxed meals, canned chicken (for chicken helper boxes), Jell-O, boxed or bagged dessert mixes, flour, sugar, canned soup, canned fruit, and hygiene products. Contact Ginger Wade at Your contribution will help fill Martha s Mission shelves with food that will help feed over 300 families each month. Together, we can help fight hunger in Carteret County. CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION ALUMINUM CAN PULL TABS Continue clipping and saving Campbell Soup UPC Codes from the labels, Box Top for Education and Aluminum Can pull tabs. Collection boxes for these items are located in the narthex. We are collecting old/used magazines for the Domestic Violence shelter. You can place your magazines in the basket in the Narthex. (The Dialysis Center is no longer accepting magazines). We are looking for volunteers to serve Holy Communion to our homebound members. If you interested in being a part of this wonderful ministry, contact Pastor Scott. Volunteers needed who would like to help serve a meal to the homeless at Hope Mission. If you are interested, please contact Marita Bretzke at: maritabretzke@yahoo.com SHOP TO STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Shop to Stop Domestic Violence at Caroline s Collectibles Thrift Store at 3716 Arendell Street, Morehead City. As their website states, This is a no brainer. Save the planet, save some money, clean out your closets and help stop Domestic Violence at the same time. Proceeds help benefit the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program. TOILETRIES TO FIGHT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Please gather all those small hotel soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes and other toiletries you ve collected and donate them to the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program. You may place your donations in the box in the narthex marked Stop Domestic Violence. PRISON OUTREACH MINISTRY Did you know that our church sponsors a female prisoner in Raleigh? Her name is Loretta. We send her cards and letters to help brighten her day. We ve also sent her Inmate Packages (snack packages). If you would like to see some of her letters, check out the Prison Outreach notebook in the narthex. Homebound Members Keep our homebound members in your prayers.
