Sunday, July 22, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Ninth Sunday after Pentecost Coventry Cathedral - Fish; ; Spence, Basil, Sir,

Service of the Word July 22, 2018 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Welcome! It is a pleasure to have you with us this morning. This morning we will use the black New Century Hymnal (NCH). *Indicates when people are invited to stand. We Gather Prelude "Blest Be the Tie That Binds", Jonas Dawson Hans Georg Nägeli, arr. Robert G. Farrell Welcome Please sign the red Friendship Book in your pew Call of the Engelbrecht Memorial Bell *Call to Worship (in unison) adapted from Psalm 14 One: Fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is no one who does good. Many: The LORD looks down from heaven on humankind to see if there are any who are wise, who seek after God. One: Many: They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse; there is no one who does good, no, not one. Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call upon the LORD? They shall be in great terror, for God is with the company of the righteous. The evildoers would confound the plans of the poor, but the LORD is the refuge of the oppressed.

All: O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of the people, Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad. Worship the Lord! *Opening Hymn Dear God, Embracing Humankind NCH #502 *Opening Prayer (in unison) adapted from Ephesians 3 We bow our knees before God, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. We pray that, according to the riches of God s glory, God may grant that we may be strengthened in our inner being with power through the Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, as we are being rooted and grounded in love. We pray that we may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that we may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to God who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. *Passing of the Peace We Listen Gospel Reading John 6:1-15 Lloyd Taylor Special Music "Just a Closer Walk With Thee", Jonas Dawson composer unknown, arr. Mark Hayes

Hebrew Scripture 2 Samuel 11:1-15 Rev. John Shillingburg Sermon Rev. John Shillingburg We Respond Prayer of the People Call for Tithes and Offerings *Offertory "He Leadeth Me", Jonas Dawson by William B. Bradbury, arr. Terry Kirkland *Prayer of Dedication (in unison) Gracious and almighty One, receive these gifts from our hands. Bless them to your service, and bless us, your servants. Fill us with your Spirit, that we may be a light unto the nations. Let it be said of us, We know they are Christians by their love. Amen. *The Lord s Prayer (in unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Announcements *Closing Prayer We are Sent *Closing Hymn Awake, My Soul, Stretch Every Nerve NCH #491

Grace UCC Collecting Basic Household Items For the Emergency Family Shelter VISIT THE HOUSE ON THE EASEL In the Good Shepherd Room Take a post-it with needed item! For example: PAPER TOWELS ~ DETERGENT ~ BATH SOAP ~ etc... GO SHOPPING! For Emergency Human Needs Return needed item to the basket beneath the easel! Grace has an opportunity to support the RCEHN s Emergency Family Shelter in a new way. Like all households (and RCEHN does have a home base just off Bentz St. where meals are fixed; belongings are stored; clothes are washed and instruction is given) there are continuing needs for the little things (paper towels, detergent, bath soap, etc.). We d like to collect these items in July and deliver them in August (our next hospitality month). There will be a cutout house on an easel near the sanctuary with a large basket underneath and small tags within the house with needed items, such as: 2 rolls paper towels; 8 oz. soft scrub, etc. You may take a tag, purchase the item(s), and then bring the items back and place in the basket for collection. Contact Carol Garrison for more info or visit Thank you in advance for your ongoing support!

Daily Bible Readings for July This month's readings are all over the place as we begin the longest stretch of the year: Common Time. But two things stood out to me as worthy of our attention. I Samuel and Revelation. I Samuel is a fun book to read because it s the history of Israel. The call of David as King and all the escapades of the Davidic Kingdom, worthy of its own daytime soap opera! There is mystery and intrigue, adultery and murder. Days of our Lives "ain't got nothing" on I Samuel! Revelation is a book that is just as fun to read if you can think of it as a book of hope rather than a "scare you into Heaven" reading. Revelation is often seen as a book of prophesies of the end of the world and the horror that will ensue. With its 6 headed beasts and secret codes, Revelation has been used to keep people in line and to read the newspaper with an eye on how close the end is. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth! Modern biblical scholarship teaches that Revelation is really a book of code for the early church that lived in terrible persecution. It is a book of hope for people whose faith meant almost daily threats of torture and imprisonment. And every generation has read Revelation with an eye to how it applies to their time because every generation has had its share of persecuted people. Bottom line, we are NOT necessarily the last generation and we don t know how any of these readings reflect ours or any other generation on earth. But, what we do know is this; whatever tribulation life may bring our way, personally or as a nation, Revelation teaches us that in the end...god wins! That s the message for a persecuted Church: In the end...god wins. That's the message to a woman facing divorce or a family in poverty or a person facing cancer. The only thing that will ever win in the end is GOD. Enjoy!
