2 Page 2 (View this bulletin on-line at January 14, 2018 Notes from the Pastor Being Present: What Technology Cannot Replace The advances in technology over the past several decades have been amazing. For example, a smartphone is more powerful than the computers used in the space crafts that took the astronauts to the moon in The average personal laptop has more power than the giant supercomputers of the 1970 s. If printing out the pages of the Internet as a book, it would weigh 1.2 billion pounds and take 57,000 years to read. But, unlike the discovery of electricity, antibiotics, or nuclear energy, both good and evil can come from the presence of technology in the world. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications addresses the delicate relationship between nature and the modern world. It states Depending on how they use media, people can grow in sympathy and compassion or become isolated in a narcissistic, self- referential world of stimuli with near narcotic effects. What s the big deal? Although technology can enhance our lives in many ways, there are leading indicators that tell us how difficult it is to disconnect when needed. One New York Times/CBS poll found that about half of respondents check their work while on vacation and after business hours. They also found one in seven people stated that they see less of their spouse and their family because they spend more time on line. The University of California at San Diego estimates that the average person today will consume 350 percent more information that the person living 20 years ago. Many experts think this is more information than most of us can handle. This information overload leads to shorter attention span, mental fatigue, memory loss and can lead to a form of addiction. El año litúrgico se ha movido hacia el tiempo ordinario y es apropiado que estos encuentros sucedan en días que de lo contrario fueran ordinarios. Ya no visitamos el pesebre ni estamos frente al sepulcro vacío. Samuel dormía en el templo, tal como era su costumbre. Andrés y Juan (Juan el otro discípulo con Andrés) estaban pasándola junto a Juan el Bautista, que estaba bautizando en Betania cuando Jesús pasó de casualidad. Su día ordinario se convirtió en trascendental. La vida de Samuel se transformó cuando le respondió a Dios. Lo mismo le sucedió a Andrés, a Juan y a Simón Pedro cuando decidieron seguir a Jesús. Por entregarse al Señor, ya no viven para sí mismo. Samuel se refiere a sí mismo como el siervo del Señor; Andrés fue a buscar a su hermano, Simón Pedro, y se lo trajo a Jesús. Pablo le escribe así a la comunidad de Corinto: No saben ustedes... que no son ustedes sus propios dueños? (1 Corintios 6:19). Samuel sabe eso y también lo saben los discípulos de Jesús. Pregunta de la semana Cómo respondo al llamado de Dios? Estoy dispuesto a cambiar de vida por seguir a Cristo?

We hear this phrase every Sunday at Mass, but there s a good chance that many Roman Catholics do not know who in the Bible originally spoke it. The phrase appears only in the Gospel of John, on the lips of John the Baptist, who utters it twice. In today s Gospel reading, John proclaims Jesus as the Lamb of God, and two of John s own disciples then follow Christ. A little bit later Andrew, who heard John and then followed Jesus, brings his brother Simon to be re-named Cephas, or Peter. A careful look at these Bible verses shows us the mission of everyone baptized into the Body of Christ: we must always proclaim our faith in Christ, so that others will follow him. We may not know how the will of God might work through those we bring to Christ; that is not the point. The point is that our ongoing mission as a church is to bring others to Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. On the old calendar, the feast of the Presentation, still more than two weeks away, was the last day of the Christmas season. Sadly, Bethlehem is hardly a place of peace on earth these days. The ancient Christian community has been largely uprooted by political strife. The Church of the Nativity stands (barely) in remarkable disrepair and disorder in Manger Square. The roof is crumbling, the major doorways are blocked, the wiring is faulty, and the worship life is disrupted by quarrels among Eastern Christians. The church was founded by the Emperor Constantine in 325, destroyed in a Samaritan revolt in 539, and rebuilt by the Emperor Justinian. When the area came under Muslim control in 638, the holiness of the church was respected, and in return Christians allowed Muslims to pray in the south aisle, a right still upheld. Earlier in that century, invading Persians were ordered to destroy all churches, but when they saw the magi carved over the doorway of the Church of the Nativity, they spared it out of respect for their ancestors who bore gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the same city. The Crusaders restored and redecorated the church by the twelfth century, and it is their plan that survives. Down a few stone steps is a stone grotto with a silver star marking the place of Christ s birth: when the star was stolen in 1847 it triggered an international crisis that exploded into the Crimean War. Since 1852, the church has been shared by the Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian Churches. The Greeks are in charge of the grotto, but don t enjoy the best of friendships with the Armenians. Catholics have the care of the Chapel of the Manger, and avoid the squabbles by a separate entrance to the Franciscan monastery church of St. Catherine. Pray for peace in Bethlehem! Rev. Each reading has its own message on our being called to serve the Lord. One way may be in speaking or witnessing our Christian beliefs in our communities, not as preachers, but through our actions (First Book of Samuel). Another way is to recognize that, as baptized Christians, we are members of the Body of Christ (Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians). Finally, in John s Gospel, Jesus begins His ministry by calling His first disciples. We are called daily to follow Jesus. How do we respond? In the first reading from the first Book of Samuel, the Lord called Samuel, who answered when awakened from his sleep, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. The reading goes on to tell us that following that call, Samuel grew up and the Lord was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect. When we give time to God in prayer, we should open our prayers by saying, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. We then need to empty ourselves of our own worldly desires and listen to His call to us that day. In Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians, he writes, Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ.and are temples of the Holy Spirit whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? You have been purchased for a price. As members of the Body of Christ, we are called, as he was, to serve our brothers and sisters in need. A simple, uncomplicated way to do that is to volunteer our time to worthy causes. In John s Gospel reading for today, Jesus changes the name of the disciple Simon to Cephas which is translated to Peter or Rock. The word rock in this case means strong foundation, upon which our church was to be built. Rock can also mean stubborn or immovable. Let us be a strong foundation for St. Joan of Arc, and not immovable in our ways. It is in giving that we receive. St. Francis. (Deacon Lee is ill. Please keep him in your prayers.)

This is the Council that updated our church in our modern world. Pope St John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council, a significant event which, to this day, continues to affect the very flow of contemporary human history. Set against a dramatic backdrop of world events, The Faithful Revolution: Vatican II is the first filmed series to document this council, its decisions, and its profound impact on all of humanity. Told through the eyes of many men and women who witnessed this event firsthand, The Faithful Revolution is an important historical documentary for all Catholics. These videos and discussions will be held in the Nursery room, Tuesdays, 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. The following are the topics that we will discuss. RETREAT FOR ALL WOMEN OF THE PARISH CCW JANUARY MEETING NOTICE The CCW is giving a retreat on Feb. 3, Mary Jo Waggoner will be presenting the topic: "Celebration of the Eucharist. All women are welcome. We will begin at 9am with Mass, then together we will pray the rosary and then proceed to the parish hall for a light breakfast. Mary Jo will then start her presentation. About 12:30 we will break for lunch and Mary Jo will finish by 2 pm. Tickets will be on sale after all Masses, the charge for the day will be $10. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! The Art & Environment Committee of St. Joan of Arc Parish would like to take the opportunity to thank those church family members who volunteered to help with the tremendous task of preparing the church for the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Each year this small group of volunteers dedicate their time and talent to preparing the parish for the celebration of Christmas, and they do a wonderful job of making the church look so beautiful for the birth of our Lord! We hope you all took the time when attending the Masses during this holy season to enjoy the beauty of the nativities, the flowers and the decorations that were placed with Love by these church members! As committee heads of Art & Environment, Melinda Pataki and Sue Page would like to extend their grateful thanks to these members of our church for setting aside time from their busy holiday schedules to accomplish this task, we couldn't have done it without you!
