Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (John 15:1-4). In these few short words, Jesus explains the way to spiritual progress is through Him. Our job is to say yes, to surrender. When we remain in Christ, we acknowledge that God is the source of all that is good, including the good that He calls me to do. So often we struggle and make no progress then in frustration we wonder why. The answer is simple. What is it that I am afraid to lose? What the Lord offers is so much more than anything I have. So let go! What is it that I am afraid of? Let go! In the image of the vine and the branches, we see clearly that our life is from the Lord. Everything that is good comes from Him. If we surrender and bear fruit, the Father will work in us to produce more. So surrender already! Here is a translation I really like of a prayer that can help us surrender. Sucipe (Receive) by St. Ignatius of Loyola Take Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O Lord, I return it. All is Thine, dispose of it wholly according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and thy grace, for this is sufficient for me. Amen. The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint session of the U.S. Congress as an annual Observance, inviting people of all faiths to join in prayer for our nation and community. Prayers will also be offered for our young people and schools, health care workers, and for those serving in the military. Our days are happier when we give a piece of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

3 Reflecting on Sunday s Readings 5th Sunday of Easter ~ April 29, 2018 To help you prepare for Mass next weekend, here are next Sunday s readings: Reading I: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 98 Reading II: 1 John 4:7-10 Gospel: John 15:9-17 Religious Education Classes will continue on Wednesday, May 2, beginning with Mass at 5:30 pm, Cinco de Mayo Dinner at 6, and Classes at 6:30 in the Hall. This will be our last session until we return in September. Bible Study Bible study class will continue this Thursday, May 3, at 10:45 am in the Parish Hall with social time and sharing of prayer requests. Class begins at 11:00. We finish at 11:45, in time to attend daily Mass at 12:00. Please call Kathy Cowan at for more information. May 10 will be our final class for this year. Archdiocesan EMHC Training Msgr. Gerard O Connor, Director of the Office of Divine Worship, will present a training session for all Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion 6 pm Thursday, May 10, at Holy Redeemer Parish in North Bend. He will present new norms of the Archdiocese with some best practices as well as special considerations for those who minister to the homebound and those in nursing homes, hospitals and other institutions. Each attendee will receive a copy of the Vademecum containing the Archdiocesan Norms and the Rites for Communion to the Sick. Be sure to mark your calendars! "The Eucharist is essential for us: It is Christ who wishes to enter our lives and fill us with his grace." ~ Pope Francis May 1, Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker To foster deep devotion to Saint Joseph among Catholics, and in response to the May Day celebrations for workers sponsored by Communists, Pope Pius XII instituted the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in This feast extends the long relationship between Joseph and the cause of workers in both Catholic faith and devotion. Beginning in the Book of Genesis, the dignity of human work has long been celebrated as a participation in the creative work of God. By work, humankind both fulfills the command found in Genesis to care for the earth (Gn 2:15) and to be productive in their labors. Saint Joseph, the carpenter and foster father of Jesus, is held up as a model of such work.
