1 April 2017 The Rev. David Nelson Pinehurst Trail Drive Atascocita, Texas (281) What s Inside The Rector s Page 2 Calendar of Events 3 Servant Leadership 4 5 Staff, Vestry, and 6 Financial Snapshot Birthdays and 7 Anniversaries About CTK 8 Palm Sunday, is on April 9, For me personally, I do not believe I have ever experienced any other liturgy that encompasses so much joy and sorrow. As we begin our Palm Sunday service, we will celebrate Jesus s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The Bible tells us that people waved branches of palms or olive trees as they walked. They sang psalms and shouted, "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We will begin our own Palm Sunday service outside and will wave branches of palms as we enter the sanctuary singing the hymn, All glory, laud, and honor. As the liturgy continues, however, our joy will soon turn to sorrow as the focus changes abruptly to the solemnity of the Passion. We will read the Passion gospel, which takes us on Jesus s journey to his crucifixion on Good Friday. I wonder what it must have been like for the people who were present at the crucifixion who loved Jesus and were distraught by what they were witnessing. Although reading the Passion gospel on Palm Sunday is difficult for us, we already know that three days later when the stone was rolled away, the tomb where they laid Jesus s bodywasemptyandjesushadrisenfromthedead. Butthe people who were present at Jesus s crucifixion did not know what weknow, muchlikepeopletodaywhohavenotexperiencedthe joy that we celebrate on Easter Day. April is going to be a busy month. Please mark your calendars for the dates outlined in Father David s article on page 2.

2 April 2017 Page 2 of 8 The Rector s Page April promises to be an exciting month! On April 2nd, Bishop Jeff Fisher will visit. Barbara has an RV that is specifically designed for haircuts, which Bishop Fisher will bless. Please stick around after worship for this and a reception. 4 April 2017 Page 4 of 8 Servant Leadership This Month s Spotlight: Debbie Lee, Senior Warden For most of us, what we know of Christ the King is what we see and experience on any given Sunday. But I think we all recognize that an amazing team of folks exist, working tirelessly behind the scenes, to ensure our doors are open each Sunday to welcome everyone! This month we spotlight one such servant leader. Meet Debbie Lee, a member of our Vestry at Christ the King and our 2017 Senior Warden. Debbie, thanks for sharing your story with us this month! Let s start with the basics. What is a Vestry? A Vestry is the legal representative of a parish with regard to all matters pertaining to its corporate property. Christ the King has 9 members on the Vestry, each with different areas of responsibility, each elected to a 3 year term. Though each parish assigns different roles to the Vestry members, each Vestry typically has a Senior Warden and Junior Warden. The presiding officer of the Vestry is our rector, Father David. The basic responsibilities of the Vestry are to help define and articulate the mission of the congregation, to support the church's mission by word and deed, to select the rector, to ensure effective organization and planning, and to manage resources and finances. We meet monthly, and current Vestry topics include the business around the new parish hall and construction, upcoming events, budget approvals, and even making utility provider changes to save us money. You are our current Senior Warden on the Vestry. What does the Senior Warden do? The Senior Warden is appointed by the Rector from the current Vestry members. At Christ the King, our Senior Warden typically serves during the last year of his or her 3 year term. However, in my role that is not the case. I am filling the role of a parishioner who left the church after his first year on the Vestry, so I am filling a 2 year term. The Senior Warden works closely with the rector on the inner workings of the church and in presenting different information to the Vestry. One of the roles of the Senior Warden is to preside in the rector s absence, though we are very fortunate to have a very hands on rector who can be contacted if or when necessary! What s the most rewarding part of this servant leadership role? Since it is so early in my time as Senior Warden, it is hard to answer what is the most rewarding part of this role, but one of the rewarding things about serving on the Vestry is that ithasallowedmetogetto know several people better. It has also allowed me to see that there are many people in the church who are committed to Christ the King and to the success of seeing our parish hall completed. I ve also enjoyed working with Father David and getting to know him better. I was fortunate enough to be on the Search Committee who interviewed him and ultimately presented him to the Vestry serving at that time. But serving with him has allowed me to get to know him personally and his passion for the success of Christ the King. [Continued on page 5]

5 Page 5 of 8 Christ the King Episcopal Church What are your reflections on the current Vestry team? Christ the King has a diverse and seasoned Vestry! Most members are long time CTK parishioners, a couple of members are serving on the Vestry for a second time, and many of the members have a business background. This provides for a diversity of thought when making decisions on behalf of the church. Each person brings a lot to the table and each person has served in different areas ofchristthekingbefore serving on the Vestry. I feel the best part of serving with this team is that each person is respectful of other s thoughts and opinions and is willing to listen when someone has the floor, which provides for a pretty cohesive unit. We are able to accomplish a lot each month, and we laugh a lot at our meetings. Having a sense of humor is key at times. Each Vestry member has a role to fill, but we all work together to make things happen. You aren t new to servant leadership, you have done awesome outreach work with Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM). Tell us about that. As you know, I loved my work with HAAM. I feel my work with HAAM is awesome because Christ the King is awesome in supporting outreach! When I ve presented HAAM s needs to CTK, the congregation has always stepped up and met, and more often than not, exceeded our goals. I feel very fortunate to belong to a congregation that is so generous. I credit my servant leadership to my mother. Growing up, my mother taught me and my siblings that to whom much is given, much is expected. By no means did our family have a lot of money. We had four kids close in age and my mother always found a way to give back. Henry will tellyouthatiama bleeding heart. But knowing that HAAM and LOTS provide a great service to the communities they serve and cannot successfully exist without the support of the communities, I feel called to give back. I am blessed to have been given so much in my life and am able to give back! How long have you been a member of Christ the King? I have attended Christ the King for 20+ years, but I was received into the church in I was very active in the church for the first 10 years that I attended CTK, even serving on the Altar Guild for a couple of years, so most people were shocked when I (and Rosemary Sullivan) were received into the church in Everyone just assumed that I was already a member! Tell us more about your family. I will be married to Henry Lee for 29 years on April 6th. We have lived in Atascocita since We have three rescue dogs Ben, Polly, and Pippa. I love traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Thank you, Debbie, for your time this month and THANK YOU for your servant leadership! Rachel Taylor Vestry Member Publicity
