6 To our dear friends at Chatfield United Methodist Church, I m writing this letter from my brother Tom s house in Jacksonville, Florida. I flew from Seattle to be able to visit with him one last time. Tom is in a hospice in Jacksonville. It s a beautiful facility with wonderfully caring and attentive staff. His physicians believe he may have three months to live. I believe you are aware that his surgeons recommended rather radical surgery to remove a portion of his rapidly growing tumor. They successfully removed about 2/3 of what they described as a pancake-size tumor in hopes of getting him prepared for a massive combination of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Their thinking was that if things went well, they may have extended his life for another couple of years. He underwent a couple of weeks of rehab following his surgery. As Gary was taking him home when he was released from rehab, Tom collapsed in the parking lot of the rehab facility. Gary immediately took him to the emergency room. Another series of MRIs revealed yet more growth in the original tumor, plus two additional tumors. He is in hospice because there are no additional treatments that the doctors believe will be effective in stopping the growth. As Gary (Tom s partner) and I were talking a short time ago, I mentioned something about Tom and Gary s generosity toward my children over the years, and how that generosity has continued on to my grandchildren. Tom and Gary remember every event with generous gifts: every birthday, Christmas, graduation... well, you get the idea. Anyway, Gary sprang up from the table and returned with a 9-inch tall stack of cards, notes and letters, all for Tom, many from families and individuals at CUMC. I write this letter to give an update, but more importantly to thank you for your encouragement and loving kindness. Tom keeps those many cards and notes because they mean a great deal to him, just as so many of you mean a great deal to him. Thank you for taking the time from your busy lives to pour your love into my brother. It is wonderful kingdom work you are doing, and far more valuable than you may think. Jesus so often reveals himself through the work of his children, and that s what all of your notes have done. Tom is no longer able to speak, but his eyes and smile tell me when he is laughing. He still has most of his cognitive abilities, but he no longer is able to use or control the right half of his body. I have discovered that he has had an impact on people in the Jacksonville area, much as he did in Chatfield. Friends visit the hospice, particularly from his workplace at Blue Cross. They loved Tom for his ability to make them laugh and for his many kindnesses toward them. It seems to be a familiar story. I pray that Tom will be comforted in his remaining days, and that he will pursue Jesus, who loves him more than any of us can comprehend. Thank you for your wonderful witness and love. With great fondness, Jon Siegel Everett, Washington New address: Tom Siegel Northeast Florida Community Hospice, Room Sunbeam Road Jacksonville, FL 32257
