1 C elebration October 2014 A monthly publication of the Chatfield United Methodist Church Knowledge and virtue are not identical, and the expulsion of ignorance by knowledge will not be enough to deal with the spiritual realities and moral challenges of the future. - Jaroslav Pelikan If anyone could claim superiority of intelligence it would be Jaroslav Pelikan. Pelikan was awarded his PhD and seminary degree when he was 22 years of age. He went on to a career as a Professor of history at Yale winning many prestigious awards and academic positions. Yet, Professor Pelikan s crowning achievement, in his own mind, was his study of the Christian Creeds. He knew that the church needed words with which to speak the truth about Faith. Dr. Pelikan knew that being able to profess one s belief in God, Creator, Redeemer and Sanctifier was more important than being able to write a doctoral thesis or even perform brain surgery. Dr. Pelikan knew that knowledge on its own would never be enough to give human beings the guidance and moral compass needed to work through all the complexities of life. Even the world's best brain surgeon cannot remove the cancer of violence from the mind of a murderer, anymore than an expert heart surgeon can remove the systemic sin of selfishness from a society that always insists on having more, more, more. There are some things in life we simply cannot learn from a lecture. ( So while we affirm the work our children and young people do in school and the continuing learning that all adults should be engaged in, we do not affirm that knowledge is enough. Being a part of a church community that can speak together words of the faith and hear together the words of the Holy Scriptures is vital in our lives. Being a part of a faith community that can encourage each other to live out a faith that says an emphatic no to evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves; as we affirm in our baptismal covenant. Knowing that there is evil, injustice and oppression is not enough. God calls us, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to resist evil, injustice and oppression. And the only way we can do this is through the encouragement of the church and the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is too hard otherwise. Knowledge is power; but Faith and a Community of Faith give legs and purpose to that power so that we can use what we know to change the world into a place that more and more is the Kingdom of God. As the Scriptures encourage us: Don t stop meeting together with other believers, which some people have gotten into the habit of doing. Instead, encourage each other Hebrews 10:25. Hope and Peace, Pastor Debra OCTOBER 2014 CHATFIELD UMC (507)

7 Giving and Receiving Have you ever thought, I wish I could remember to give on a regular basis to the church but I always forget. Or, I wish I could get to church every Sunday but my schedule doesn t let me. Or, I wish I could give to the church every Sunday but my schedule makes that difficult. Because we believe that giving to the church is an important part of Christian discipleship, we have set up a way for you to fulfill all your giving wishes. It is a simple thing called ACH. ACH is a secure electronic transfer of an authorized payment from an individual's checking or savings account into the church s bank account. All you have to do is fill out the form and Bea Zincke, our financial secretary, will do the rest. Bea personally takes care of each ACH transaction by recording it in our giving records. She is also able to start or stop an ACH giving transaction whenever you, the giver, would like. You can give as much or as little as you would like on a weekly, monthly or even yearly basis. Each offering, in whatever amount, is important; both to the church and to the Christian giver. We want to partner with you in your Christian Discipleship. Let us help you with ACH. Fill out the form provided and give to Bea Zincke or mail it to the church. Hope and Peace, Pastor Debra An ACH form is on the reverse side of this page. Please use this or make a copy if you wish to enroll in the ACH program OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS Annaliese Johnson Betty Johnson Jolene Dornack Greg Forbes Darrell Bacon Star Kester Karen Long Gary Pagel Don Amy Tena Churchward Linda Forbes Carly Fitzgerald Josh Waadevig Michael Vreeman Sarah Waadevig Gary Hareldson Cadyn Musel Emily Fitzgerald Danae Forbes Patrick Hanson David Zincke Clayton Wright Ann Halloran Marjorie Scott Natasha Irish Nicky Johnson Jeanne Ferguson Marian Gartner Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes. 7 In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our future. -Alex Haley

10 Jars for Mission October 12, 2014 How can jars raise money for missions? Each person who is willing to fill a jar with something creative or interesting or valuable can help us continue to raise money to offset the cost of our next mission trip scheduled for the summer of Fill a jar, bring it to church, and raise money for mission. Won t it be fun to see the creativity of the congregation as we create jars for each other s enjoyment? Making the Jars: Fill a clean jar (does not have to be a canning jar) with anything that someone else might find valuable or interesting Put a lid on the jar. Make sure it is secure Bring the jar to the church anytime before October 7 Suggestions for filling a jar: Cookies or ingredients for cookies/bars/cakes/brownies Herbs/flavored vinegars Tea/drink mixes/hot chocolate mixes Dried fruit Pickles/relishes/preserves/honey String Craft supplies/sewing kit/buttons Party in a jar/balloons/small toys Tractor/cars/other collectables Make a snow globe Check out Pinterest, other websites or the library for more ideas. Purchasing the jars: The mission committee will place a number on each jar. A corresponding slip of paper with the number will be placed in a box. After paying $5, a person reaches into the box and draws out a number. They then have purchased the jar with the corresponding number. Purchasing will begin at 8:30 am on Sunday Oct. 12 and continue until the jars are sold. No jars will be sold during the worship service. Of course, you could trade jars with others afterwards. Or try to auction off your prized jar for even more money and put the raised money in the collection box. Proceeds from the sale will be used for future mission trips. There is no such thing as a non-working mother. 10

12 Mozart Makafui Adevu Mozart is visiting the MN Annual Conference in October. While he won t be able to be with us I wanted you to know about him because of his work in agriculture. Through his ministry our UMCOR and GBGM dollars are doing the work of feeding the poor and teaching sustainability to the people in Africa. Thanks be to God. Serving At: Sustainable Agriculture and Development Program for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Location: Ghana, Africa Home Country: Ghana, Africa Mozart M. K. Adevu is a United Methodist missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries serving as the Africa regional coordinator for the Sustainable Agriculture and Development Program for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). He is based in Accra, Ghana, West Africa. Mr. Adevu s program focuses on the training of communities for transformation, including assessment of needs and assets, and training in such areas as integrated crop and pest management, nutrition improvement using moringa and soybeans; beekeeping that produces pure, hygienic honey; livestockand poverty-improvement practices, and agroforestry to protect the environment and encourage the growing of trees that produce food and income. The UMCOR-Sustainable Agriculture and Develop-ment Program is the first to introduce modern beekeeping into Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It is also the first to provide training in the cultivation of moringa in Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the DRC. Moringa is a near-miraculous plant that is hardy, provides high-grade nutrition, and is a source of treatment for several diseases. Congregations and annual conferences identify many of the farmers in the program. Training is subject to local situations and needs. God s mission of feeding the hungry and the poor has been the hallmark of my work, Mozart says. Through God s divine grace, the program has already improved the lives of over 50,000 destitute families in Africa over the last 10 years. Born in Ho, Ghana, Mozart earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from the University of Cape Coast in Ghana in In 1987 he received the Master of Science degree in animal breeding from Pantnagar University, a well-known school for agriculture in Uttar Pradesh State in India. Mozart studied management and public administration at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and was awarded a post-graduate certificate in Mozart is married to Janet Mina, and they are the parents of two sons, Makafui Kofi and Toni Dela Kofi; and one daughter, Selma Afi Serwaa. Mozart s mother, Grace Ama Afedo is a deaconess in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The Adevu family attends the Adenta Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Adenta, Accra,
