They receive modest but critical income and food support benefits while they work to become more self-sufficient. The Governor s Office has petitioned the court to allow the state to continue these essential supports even if there is a shutdown. If the court does not find in favor of the Governor s Office, our residents will not receive any cash or food benefits effective July 1. We aren t sure how their access to health care and prescription medications would be affected by an adverse court decision. We need your help as we plan for the worst, and pray for the best. Please consider making a donation to help these women and families avoid a crisis. Our residents need the essentials listed below to get themselves and their children through this difficult time. In the happy event that a shutdown is averted, or the court finds in favor of the Governor s Office, your donation will still be used to directly assist the women and families of Emma Norton Residence and Emma s Place. You can deliver supplies to Emma Norton Residence. Bus, gas, and Cub Foods cards can be delivered or mailed. Thank you for your donations, prayers, and support for our residents! 6 Benefit for Dale Rodgers Family The Rodgers family lost their home and all personal belongings in a fire on Sunday, June 12. Donations can be dropped off or sent to Root River State Bank or the Chatfield VFW. Free Concert SONGS OF HOPE The Potter Advisory Committee is co-sponsoring the Songs of Hope who will be putting on a concert in Potter Auditorium on Tuesday, July 19 at 7 pm. There will be 50 talented performers aged from 17 countries and 5 continents. This program is a must-see for all ages! 2011 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award Finalist! Mayo Clinic Hospice Community Grief Support Groups Fall 2011 Eight consecutive Monday meetings will be held from September 19 through November 7, 2011 Afternoon Session: 1:00-2:30 pm *Death of a Spouse or Significant Other Evening Sessions: 6:30 8:00 pm *Death of a Child or Grandchild *Death of a Parent or Grandparent *Death of a Spouse or Significant Other The Mayo clinic Hospice is offering eight-week specialized Adult Grief Groups in Rochester. Each group must have a minimum of 5 participants per group by the registration deadline in order for the group to be held. The groups are open and free of charge to anyone from the community who has lost a significant person in their lives through death prior to June 1. It is necessary to attend the first session to participate in the next seven weeks. Registrations must be received by September 9. 8 IT S FINALLY TIME! Vacation Bible School begins on Monday, July 18 at 8:45 am Mission: Fillmore County Food Shelf. Each child is being asked to bring a non-perishable item with them each day. You are invited to a VBS wrap-up party on Friday, July 22 at 11:15 am. The campers will be singing and we will have a video presentation. We would welcome any cookie donations for the Friday party. Health News Review of CareNotes by Marlene Hisey Michael J. Farrell, a freelance writer and editor with more than a quartercentury of experience in religious publishing, offers this week s topic HUMOR IT HELPS US AS WE AGE. Mr. Farrell reminds us that God gave us a whole system of facial muscles designed just for laughing; he must have wanted us to use them. Old people can be interesting, jovial, lovable, active, wise, witty, and holy, if only we could cast aside the prejudices of our culture and our own negative attitudes toward aging. The following suggestions will help you use humor to do just that. *TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT LAUGHTER. Even the Bible encourages us to laugh Proverbs 17:22 tells us A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones. Ancient Egyptian writings show evidence of jokes and slapstick, and playwrights of ancient Greece were making fun of silly behavior of their time. Humor is not a random accident of our existence; it is an integral part of us, and for a purpose. Only humans truly laugh. *USE HUMOR TO HELP YOU HEAL. Both Humor and comedy are good for us both physically and emotionally. Some of us are currently experiencing ailments and various problems, or will sometime in the future. Will you give up or will you fight back? *FEEL FREE TO FEEL GOOD. We know humor cannot directly cure physical or mental illness. But humor can have an impact on how we deal with illness. Norman Cousins has shown us how humor therapy can help. *USE HUMOR TO GAIN PERSPECTIVE. The power of humor can help us take a new look at life. Theologian, S. Kierkegaard wrote: Wherever there is life there is contradiction, and wherever there is contradiction the comical is present. Of course, life with all of its ups and downs is serious, but sometimes the only logical thing to do is laugh at life. *LOOK BEYOND THE LAUGHTER WITH HOPE AND FAITH. Having hope makes it easier to laugh even when we are in pain. Faith, as well as hope, can be the balm of old age. God is all the consolation we need. But a sprightly, humorous God is surely preferable to a gloomy one. Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you ve got to start young.
