1 JUNE 2015 C elebration A monthly publication of the Chatfield United Methodist Church 50 Ways to Love Your Neighbor Last month I shared with you the summary of mission/service outreach of Chatfield UMC I submitted to the Annual Conference at their request. I received a call from Gail Johnson at the conference office that we had been selected as one of the 50 churches that will be on display at the Annual Conference. Called 50 Ways to Love Your Neighbor the displays will be available for attendees to peruse at the Annual Conference in St. Cloud. Hopefully, through these displays others will get ideas of how they can serve their neighbors as people of the United Methodist Church. A group of us got together one morning to put together the display that I will take to the Conference. We focused on the Parish Nurse ministry to Senior Adults, the Community VBS, the Weekend Food Program, and some of the ways we serve alongside the community of Chatfield. As we were putting the display together, we thought of all the other ministries we could add to our display. As we stood back to admire the display boards we all remarked on its impact and the story it told. What an exciting place of ministry we have built together here at Chatfield UMC! You will be able to see the display in the narthex and fellowship hall in the weeks to come. In This Together This display represents a picture of OUR ministry of service as disciples of Jesus Christ. None of us do any of this alone. As you look at the display, know that there is always a place for you in the ministry of Chatfield UMC. There is always room at the work table for you. Sometimes we forget to ask people if they would be interested in serving alongside us. If we haven t asked, it isn t because we don t want you. It is simply because we have been neglectful. We hope you will forgive us. I hope you will remind us that you are willing to help. We never expect anyone to do anything they don t want to. But don t ever feel you are unqualified. We ALL started out feeling unqualified and unsure; but through the work of serving God we learn so much about ourselves and our gifts and graces. And we experience such a joy that most of us couldn t imagine NOT volunteering our time and talents. You are invited to discover this joy alongside us. Throughout this newsletter there are many opportunities for service. Choose one and join in. It will bless you as much as it blesses us. Hope and Peace, Pastor Debra JUNE 2015 * CHATFIELD UMC * ( )

4 Chatfield United Methodist Church Celebrated It s 90 th Father-Son Banquet On April 22, the Chatfield UMC hosted multiple generations of fathers and sons as they celebrated the church s 90 th Father-Son banquet. In the Spring of 1925, the first Chatfield UMC Father-Son banquet was held. The basement of the old church (located along Winona Street in what is now the church parking lot) was filled to over flowing. There were fathers and sons in every corner. Tickets quickly sold out as the banquet was one of the biggest social events of the year a chance to connect with friends and neighbors and to dine out, something rarely done back then. We suspect it was always the women of the church who cooked the meal for the fathers and sons. The United Methodist Women s (UMW) group, who will celebrate 75 years in September, began officially hosting the banquet in about 1940, serving the traditional meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy and corn with homemade pie for dessert. One source tells of the year the women decided to substitute bars/cake for the pie. It did not set well with the men and it s been homemade pie ever since. Today, while the UMW still hosts the banquet, the main portion of the meal is catered, except for the pies which are still made by the church ladies. Another long standing tradition is the toast to the Fathers and the toast to the Sons. The toasts have ranged from something humorous to something heartfelt, depending on who was asked to do it, all equally meaningful. This year s toast to the Sons was given by UMC member, Mike Simpson, and the toast to the Fathers was given by Mike s adult son, Jim. Jim s young son, Kael, also attended the banquet. In addition to the toasts, there was always some form of entertainment or an interesting speaker. This year s speaker was John Goutcher, who spoke on North by Canoe Christian Adventures in the Boundary Waters. In the early 50 s the banquet was attended by UMC members, Bob Jefferis, Andy Groen, Oscar Fahlgren, Norman House, Larry Zincke, Dwaine Yust, George Potter, Hugo and Bob Siegel, Louis and Hershel Thurber, and Art and Roger Houghtelin, to name a few. Several of these men went on to attend for many more years, later joined by their sons and grandsons. Not having a son didn t keep the men from attending they invited nephews, in-laws, friends and neighbors to join them for an evening of great food and fellowship. Bob Jefferis continued to attend the Father-Son banquets until the age of 101! His daughters estimate that he attended over 75 of them in his lifetime, attending them first with father figures, Orville Briggs, Frank Cooper, Fritz Stout & Frank Chermak, before his own sons, Tom, Mallory & Michael were old enough to join him. Later, Bob s sons-in-law and grandsons would enjoy the banquet with him as well. While the event is held at the Chatfield UMC, it was always, to our knowledge, a community event. Jim Burnap remembers attending the banquet in the old church along with his father, Bud, and his brothers, Bill and Joe. Bill also gave the toast to the Fathers one year. Jim, his sons, and grandson still attend the banquet. In spite of all the other activities that keep families busy in today s fast paced world, multiple generations from the church and the surrounding community still make time to attend this yearly event, with 68 tickets being sold this year. Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success. 4

5 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION VBS Chatfield United Methodist Church July 13, :30 11:45 am Vacation Bible School will be held July 13 through July17 from 8:30 to 11:45 am. Registration will be done through the Chatfield United Methodist Face Book page. Contact Jennifer Collett if you have questions. The theme for this year s Bible School is SonWest Roundup. Chatfield UMC has provided a community wide VBS for a number of years. This year the ELCA in town will be joining us in a joint effort to provide an ecumenical program. The people of the church put amazing amounts of love, work, creativity, and commitment into providing children will an almost magical VBS experience. Each year children leave on the last day asking when the next VBS will happen. Each year children are singing VBS songs (most of which are based on biblical passages) to their families, neighbors and friends. For many months after VBS is over. Each year, they eagerly come back to learn new songs, hear new stories, reconnect with the adults from the church who have shown them love AND learn again, and more deeply, that they are beloved children of God. Ages 3 years through 6 th grade are invited to join in the fun of learning. Civic Engagement as Christian Service The Confirmation Class attended a Post Bulletin Town Forum in October We heard about the ways the community of Chatfield can be featured in the Post Bulletin and some of the great things that happen in our community. The students also learned about the Post Bulletin teacher of the month award. They returned to the church and placed a nomination for Mr. Lee Becker. On May 6 the students were present as Mr. Becker received the Post Bulletin May 2015 Teacher of the Month award. It was great to see how young people s actions can have such wonderful results. Some of you will remember Lee as the son of a former pastor. Congratulations to Mr. Becker and the students of the 2015 Confirmation Class. You all are changing the world. 5
