3 COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE BISHOP WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2014 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. This year, World Mission Sunday will be celebrated on October 19. Each year the needs of the Catholic Church in the missions grow as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Mission dioceses about 1,000 at this time receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected from this annual appeal. These funds help support catechetical programs, the work of Religious Communities, communication and transportation needs, and the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools. Modeling Pope Francis s love for the least among us and fulfilling the call from Christ to love our neighbor, I ask you to support this special collection on World Mission Sunday. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet Parables-- Scripture Study There is a saying among storytellers: "The story begins when the teller stops talking." Jesus is a master teacher and a master storyteller. When we read the Synoptic Gospels, we see much of Jesus' teaching comes in story form, as parables. By their nature, parables are meant to involve hearers and challenge them to change their perspective, their hearts, and their behavior. The parables invite us to live in a new way, in a way worthy of the Gospel. I will offer a study of the parables using the Little Rock Scripture Study materials, which consists of a book on the Parables and a study guide. Each meeting will consist of going over the questions in the study guide and viewing a DVD presentation that summarizes the week's lesson. The total study is ten weeks. We will do five lessons this year, beginning on Thursday October 16th and ending November 20th. We will do the remaining five lessons beginning in January The cost is about $15 dollars. If you would like to join, we will meet on Thursday evenings at 7PM. If there is sufficient interest I can setup a afternoon session. 5 Congratulations! On September 27th, four of our students were selected to represented HFCS at the University of St. Francis Art Center, in an art workshop. Nicholas Falco, Cayliann Gillie, Sabrina Iniguez, and Emilie Steinbrecher participated in four different workshops taught by the university and Sabrina s artwork was featured along with other students work in the Diocese. Beatification Celebration Mass of Pope Paul VI On Tuesday October 21 st, Bishop Conlon will be at Montini Catholic High School celebrating Mass in honor of the beatification of Pope Paul VI. The official beatification will take place in Rome on Sunday, October 19 th. The Christian Brothers Religious Order was in the planning phase of a new high school in Lombard in 1963, the same year Pope Paul VI was elected to the Papacy. The new school opened in 1966 and was named Montini Catholic High School to honor the new Pope whose baptismal name was Giovanni Battista Montini.
