4 Upcoming events...mark your calendars for Holy Family's and Knights of Columbus' Texas Hold 'Em Poker tournament on Saturday, January 28, This event is open to everyone, so bring your family and friends! Check-in and dinner begin at 6:00pm and the first hand will be dealt at 7:15pm. There is a cash payout for the final table. Tournament admission is $100 and the spectator fee is $20 (includes drinks and dinner). Patricia Hoffmann is the physical education teacher at Holy Family. Mrs. Hoffmann's credentials include a BS degree in Physical Education from Illinois Benedictine University, Lisle, IL with a K- 12th grade teaching certification. As the Physical Education teacher for St. Charles Borromeo since 1987, she has developed and lead the interscholastic volleyball, middle school health education, the President's Fitness Testing, Badminton, Roller Skating and Walk-a-Thon programs and assisted the student council. VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED Tutors on Wheels is an adult literacy (English as a Second Language) program sponsored by the Congregation of St. Joseph of La Grange. This program is in need of volunteers to teach English in Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Addison and other surrounding areas. Teaching takes place in libraries, churches, businesses, and social service agencies. Volunteers are needed to teach ESL one hour a week, on a one-to-one basis in nearby locations. Tutoring sessions are scheduled weekday mornings and some late afternoons (and/or evenings.) Training, books, and other materials are provided. It is not required to speak or understand another language. A tutor training will be held on Saturday, January 14, It is necessary that you attend the training sessions. The evening will begin at 6:00 PM with Rosary and Mass in the Church. At the dinner which will follow in the Parish Hall, Father Burke Masters, Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Joliet will be the guest speaker. The Serra Club is a national organization fostering vocations to the priesthood and religious life. 5 The Epiphany of the Lord The Little Drummer Boy Did you know that the only reason we say that there were three Wise Men is that they brought three gifts? The Bible never mentions their number or their names. The gifts tell us about the givers. And these special gifts--gold, frankincense, and myrrh--tell us much. When one king visited or sent an ambassador to another, he would give a gift of gold to show that he acknowledged the kingship of the other. So the first gift of the Wise Men tells us they recognized Jesus as king. The second gift is a type of incense, which was used in Jesus' time to worship God. This gift shows the Wise Men paying homage to Jesus' divinity. Oil, the gift of myrrh, is used to anoint the dying. It reminds us of Jesus' suffering and death on the cross. What gifts do we have for Jesus? Maybe we can take a hint from the Wise Men. If we acknowledge Jesus as king, maybe a better gift than gold would be pledging our obedience to him. Each day we can promise to live our vocation as best we can, to love those around us, and forgive those who hurt us. A better way than burning incense to pay homage to Jesus' divinity is taking time to pray throughout the day. Some people are able to attend daily Mass, others spend time in adoration before the Eucharist, or take even a few minutes of their lunch break to say the rosary. As for the gift of myrrh, we can offer Jesus the crosses we bear each day. When we accept suffering in our lives, especially that caused by our sins, we give ourselves to Jesus as he gave himself for us on the cross. The song "The Little Drummer Boy" reminds us that the best gift is not necessarily the most expensive one. Instead, it is the simple gift that only we can give.
