3 COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of communities nationwide for over 40 years in an effort to eradicate poverty. During World Youth Day, July 25, 2013, Pope Francis told us to never tire of working for a more just world, marked by greater solidarity. CCHD puts these words into action by funding housing, education, and the development of job opportunities. Projects supported by CCHD move beyond providing for basic needs. They work to build healthy, sustainable futures for communities. Ten years ago, Boston s Haley House began offering bakery training at the request of a few regular guests at the soup kitchen. Experiencing a tremendous demand, Haley House created a sixmonth course that includes customer relations and basic business principles. Haley House currently has 70 trainees who have completed the program and are now employed in the Boston area. Haley House also runs cooking classes for at-risk teens and a Transitional Employment Program that provides holistic, individual support to men and women re-entering the community after incarceration. Haley House creates a strong local economy by building human relationships; it carries on Christ s mission to bring glad tidings to the poor... liberty to captives... sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free (Lk 4:18). This Collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Collection funds offer new hope each year to those living in poverty throughout the United States. And remember, 25 percent of the Collection s proceeds stays here in our diocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors. Help us defend human dignity and show Christ s charity to those in need. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet CCHD Grantee: Forest Park Community Center, Joliet Forest Park Community Center was established in 1994 in Joliet, IL. The program is dedicated to empower the low-income residents by achieving a common goal for the improvement of safety, health, housing, education and welfare of the residents in the Forest Park community. The program is designed to prepare students for a successful transition into the educational system by providing mentors and tutors to increase homework completion, computer training and computer access. They will provide programs such as individual and family counseling, Early Learning Center, Job Training, Food Pantry Distribution, and Second Look Dress for Success.

Then the young men will break up into small groups with our current seminarians to hear their vocation stories and what life is like in the seminary. THE LIVING ROSARY October is the month that we dedicate to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and it is also Respect Life Month. On October 28th, the students at Holy Family Catholic School took part in a Living Rosary. The Holy Family students and faculty dedicated the Living Rosary both to Our Lady and to the wonderful gift of life that God has given to each and every one of us. The students at Holy Family built the rosary bead-by-bead. Each of the students represented a bead/prayer or mystery of the Rosary. The students prayed the Rosary in 8 different languages and each one presented the Blessed Mother with a flower representing his/her love for Our Lady. They led every one in song through their musical talents of singing and playing the piano. The students did a magnificent job showing their love and respect to Our Lady and to life. As one attendee said, I could feel the whole world praying the Rosary together to Our Lady! We would like to express a special thank you to Jim Geils and his family for donating the beautiful flowers that the Holy Family students were able to present to the Blessed Mother. And also a special thank you for all who attended the Living Rosary devotion. You and your families will remain in the prayers of the students and faculty at Holy Family Catholic School.
