1 The Happenings At Pittman Park MONTHLY NEWSLETTER PITTMAN PARK UMC NOVEMBER 2018 WELCOME! It is a wonderful word and one I love to hear... Welcome! It has mysterious properties. Have you discovered it s power to transform both the one who speaks it...and the one who receives it. Welcome! Test it. Try it out yourself and see if what I say isn t true. Pittman Park from its beginning has always been a welcoming congregation. I especially love to hear stories of the early years at Pittman Park. Three couples in a meeting recently were sharing stories of how they had come to be a part of Pittman Park. Everyone was fascinated to find out that all three couples had received invitations from the same precious Pittman Park member - Bennie Herring. Way to go Bennie!! May God increase your tribe!! You ve heard about Woody Powell haven t you? What an interesting soul! Immersing himself in the work of joyful invitation, he would make his visits armed with pecan pies he had baked and/or beautiful roses he had grown in his garden. He offered his life so completely as a beacon for Christ s love. I wonder how many found their way into a connection at Pittman Park because of the love he shared! Another favorite story of mine is the way in which Mike Huling for nearly 10 years began and ended worship on Sunday mornings at Pittman Park. As I understand, he would invite the congregation to repeat with him the words: Open Hearts! Open Minds! Open Doors! Don t you know this set the tone for making people feel welcomed and connected to each other in Christian ministry! I am grateful for the legacy of Mike s wonderful spirit which persists among us as a vital part of who we are today. There are so many ways to make our lives an expression of welcome. Some of you are rediscovering the joy of welcoming at Open Table - our midweek meal. It is wonderful to be able to say welcome...there is no charge for the meal...and by the way, why don t you join me at my table. Already there is such a wonderful spirit surrounding this time together. Want to invest in this ministry? You can help out in two ways. First, consider contributing the equivalent of what you would have spent for Wednesday Night Suppers and designating it for Open Table on your check or through your online giving. Your gifts will be used to prepare meals for you and all the guests God sends our way. Second, invite someone who is not connected with a church to come join you at your table. You will begin to see how welcome transforms the host and the guest! Hospitality, invitation and welcome are at the core of our faith. Over and over again in the gospels we find Jesus engaging with others in order that they might perceive God s love and receive the blessed call into active ministry. Throughout the letters of Paul there is a common theme of greeting and welcome to the outsider. It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit would rekindle the flame of welcome among us. It is not that it is not a part of who we are, but what a wonder it would be to see all of us aflame with the desire to welcome others as Christ welcomes us! Be creative with this! Bennie, Woody and Mike have set a good precedent. Let s not miss the opportunity to spread the good news of Christ through our sincere expressions of welcome. Blessings! 2 Park KIDS September Series: Dirty Job: Someone's Gotta Do It Life App: Initiative: Seeing what needs to be done and doing it. When we give kids a task, they're often very eager to help. But what if they learned to do it without being asked? What if we helped them see the needs around them then take action? When God saw our sin, He took initiative. He sent Jesus to make things right. When we see a need and choose to do something about it, people can see the reality of God's love for them. This month, we'll be taking a closer look at one of the best examples of someone who showed initiative even when he didn't have to. Work at everything you do with all your heart. Work as if you were working for the Lord. Colossians 3:23a, NIrV

3 Park STUDENTS August was an amazing month for Park STUDENTS. We just completed a series titled The Greatest. We discussed the greatest commandment that s Jesus gave us. To love God and love others as yourself. We also had fun themed nights. We had a dance competition, team night, and a lip sync performance. September is going to be just as JAM PACKED as we will have a pool party at the Mock s, the high schoolers are going to Rock the Universe, and we will be doing many different service projects as part of our Service September Month. Everyone is always welcomed to come check out Park STUDENTS, and a huge thank you to our volunteers and small group leaders. We are #BETTERTOGETHER!

4 Join us for Fill My Cup - a PPUMC Women's Ministry event. The dream to create an event for fellowship and faith sharing, has grown to an annual event reaching in and beyond our local congregation! It is an open event with ticket pricing set to reach adult women of different ages and stages in life. For 2018, Kathy Bradley is the Inspirational Speaker and Jil Trower will lead our worship music. Join us, invite your friends, reserve a table... It is amazing! As we plan for our 6th annual tea, keep us in your prayers that we may touch others. We'd love your help selling tickets or serving as a table hostess the day of the event - contact our church office at or PPUMC@nctv.com Blessings, Wendy Weaver Women's Ministry Chair

Food Ministry Moment: It was a blip in the headlines, but as manager of the Can Do Spirit Food Pantry at Pittman Park, it caused me to perk up. A report, recently released by the Food Research and Action Center, ranks Georgia 9th in the nation for food hardship. The report focuses on households in 2016 and 2017, and defines food hardship as not being able to afford food for a family. When I hear things like this, I am glad to be a part of a church that is on the front lines, meeting this need. Pittman Park prepares and distributes food free of charge in partnership with groups across the city, through Backpack Buddies, Rebecca s Cafe and our Food Pantry. Join us as we respond to the needs of our neighbors.

8 The Man in the Mirror On Mondays at noon there is a group of men who have become known as The Grilled Cheese Group...because that is the lunch menu every week. We would like to invite any man who might be interested to join us at noon in the Pittman Park student center. We eat, visit, reflect on scripture and pray. It is a winning combination! We do want to spread the word that beginning September 10th our scriptural focus for 12 weeks will be guided by a 30 year old classic - The Man in the Mirror by Patrick Morley. The sub-title of this book is - Solving the 24 Problems Men Face. Interested?? We would love to have you join us. Hope to see you at noon on Monday,
