1 Highlands United Methodist Church Sometimes it s good to just spend time in a book of the Bible soaking in what the Lord has to say to us. For these next few weeks we will be doing just that. We will begin a sermon series this month called A Letter of Love and Light, looking at the letter of 1 John. John was writing this letter after some had left fellowship with believers over disagreements and encouraging the remaining believers to stick with the truths they knew about Jesus Christ. In this letter you will see many of the same themes over and over, such as light and darkness, truth and lies, and love and hate. I hope this letter will encourage you in your walk with Christ to walk in the light and love of Christ. I hope this letter will encourage you to love the Lord and love others more as well. I could not write this letter without also mentioning the Special Called General Conference at the end of this month. At the end of this month delegates from around the world will be meeting to discuss and vote on issues concerning the church s stance on human sexuality and where we go from here. There is a great possibility that the church structure will end up looking very different from what it looks like today. In the meantime, as we wait on the results, I encourage you not to worry, but to trust in the Lord and remain faithful. I encourage you to keep working to make disciples for the transformation of the world. While we are hoping for unity and hoping that the church does not split, I m hoping that if the church does split we will be encouraged by the words of 1 John. Since this letter was written after a split among people leaving fellowship, I hope these words encourage us as well. It is my hope that no matter what happens at General Conference, we will continue to be people who walk in God s light rather than darkness. It is my hope that we will continue to love others as we love the Lord. It is my hope that we will cling to the truth that because of the blood of Jesus Christ we are beloved children of God. So let us dig into John s first letter this month. Let us remember to walk in the light. Let us be encouraged by this letter reminding us of who we are and what we hold true. And my prayer is that the Lord would continue to meet with us this next month and transform us into the people He is calling us to be. Families can go to to register. Eligible children must reside in Florida and be born between 9/2/2014 and 9/1/2015. 4 We will be having a short Cuba Mission trip this year, but plans are still underway. We expect to go for about 3 1/2 days and everyone is welcome to go with us! The more the merrier. Check it out at onlinesermons Did you know On January 2nd we moved our meeting time from Sunday to Wednesdays at 5:30 For as long as we can remember, our regular Youth meetings have always been on Sunday. To quote Ecclesiastes 3:1, There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. Now is a time for change. To remove some obstacles that make it difficult for some of our youth to attend, we have moved our meeting to Wednesday nights. Youth meetings will start at 5:30 PM and end at 7PM. However, youth may also choose to stick around for the Community Campfire that starts at 7PM and ends around 8:30 PM. Highlands youth group Pray for our youth The decision to move our Youth Group meeting time to Wednesday comes after careful consideration and prayer. More youth are now able to attend and this has opened the door for families and the Church as a whole to come together. We think this is proving to be a positive change, and most people we have told about this decision are excited. We all know that change can be difficult and requires some adjustment. Please keep this decision and our group in your thoughts and prayers. We know that God is doing some great things with this group! Highlands Youth Leadership Team 5 5
