The The United Methodist Church of of Danbury Message from Pastor Kim Dear friends, It has been an amazing summer in terms of weather, which as we all know, impacts us a great deal. Summer has offered us a long string of glorious days. As the end of August approaches, I have to confess I am sorry to see summer go this year. Though I was only away one weekend this summer, I have been blessed to enjoy (along with cats Niko and Abby) many hours on the parsonage screened-in porch. Though it s hard to see such a splendid summer go, I also really like the season of fall. Fall blesses us with its crimson, orange and yellow foliage; festive displays of pumpkins and mums; and fragrances of crisp, cool air and wood smoke. The transition from one season to another reminds me again that each season offers us unique things for which to be grateful. Our church, too, has its own seasons. The season of fall brings many special opportunities which I would like to call to your attention. Though they are mentioned in other places in this FLAME, they are important enough to highlight in this space. Sept Homecoming Sunday. This a day to re-gather for a new year, start Sunday school, and celebrate our connection. We will also offer a Backpack Blessing, recognize our Sunday School teachers, and offer Holy Communion. If you have been away for the summer or part of the summer, we will look forward to re-connecting with you on Sept. 7. Summer travelers--you have been missed! Sept Annual Church Conference at 10:30 a.m. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Betsy Ott, will lead us as we reflect on our health as a congregation, elect officers and committee members, and celebrate our connection as United Methodists. Oct First night of Revival Bible study, a new 6 week study program developed by Rev. Adam Hamilton. We will begin at 6:30 p.m., after Thursday Night Life. Everyone is welcome. Please see Pastor Kim to sign up. (continued page 4)

Child care is available Sunday mornings. All our morning worship services are followed by a time of fellowship in the Narthex. Revival : Upcoming Pastor s Bible Study Starting in the fall, Pastor Kim will be doing the Pastor s Bible study in a different manner. Instead of meeting each week to discuss the lectionary passages, we are going to try offering structured Bible study programs, for 5 or 6 week periods each. We are pleased to announce that the first study opportunity will feature Rev. Adam Hamilton s newly released Revival study program. The dates for the study are the following Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.: Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, and Nov. 13 (skipping Nov. 6). Please plan to join us as Rev. Hamilton takes us on a six week journey to England, following the life of John Wesley and exploring the defining characteristics of a Wesleyan Christian. John Wesley founded the spiritual movement that resulted in the United Methodist Christ. His message and his faith continue to speak to 21st century Christians--calling for a revival of our hearts and souls so that our world might be changed. Those who joined last spring s Lenten study will remember that Adam Hamilton is a gifted preacher and teacher. He just released the Revival study, and we will look forward to being among its first participants. To sign up for the fall study, please or speak to Pastor Kim. The cost of the study will be $15, which will include your study book and class materials.
3 Volume 15, Issue 9 September 2014 Page 3 Covenant to Care Friday morning, August 15 th I delivered 19 filled backpacks to DCF. That is the largest number of backpacks we have collected since I have been doing Covenant to Care! Our social worker, Toni Moore as so excited. She said that they would be gone before the day ended! It is only possible because of all of you who contributed in many ways. Thanks to all of you, 19 of our community s students in need are going to be able to begin a new school year with the tools they need to succeed! I can t help thinking Gloria Thorn would be so proud of us and happy for our children. I would like to thank our United Methodist Women, whose continued support allows me to take advantage of the pre-school sales. With their support, our money goes farther and we are able to help more students. Thank you ladies! I know I have said this before but I need to say it again. I am so blessed to be part of such a caring and generous church family. When we come together to help each other, especially those less fortunate, we are truly doing God s work. With gratitude and grace, Phyllis Tranzillo Trustees The Trustees meeting was held Wed., August 6 th. Items discussed were as follows: The new East/West Wing Doors are in and Kevin O Shea will be installing the doors by the end of August. The Youth Room has been painted, the floor cleaned and is ready for Youth Sunday School this fall. The ceiling leak in the Narthex was discussed and we are moving forward in an attempt to determine the amount of damage to the wood structure, if any. Once determination is made on extent of damage, work will begin to repair and replace whatever is needed. After completion, a quote will be obtained from different roof repair providers to fix the leak that has existed for many years. Larry is scheduled to do lockup for the month of September. Painting and repair of garage door at parsonage was identified and will be scheduled for completion this fall. -Larry Bornemeier Correction: The title for last month s article on Naval Commandeer Daniel Lombardo was incorrect and should have been Congratulations Commandeer Daniel Lombardo. Blessing of the Kids Backpacks Bring your backpack to the Worship service on September 7 th for a special blessing.

6 Yes, It is Pumpkin Time Again!! Page 6 The Great Pumpkin says that is nitty-gritty time. The success of our 10th Annual Pumpkin Festival will depend on everyone s hard work, on everyone s outreach for craft vendors, tag sale vendors, for program ads. Set a goal: give 10 neighbors and colleagues our flyer and/or refer them to our very informative website: Truly, I tell you it is nitty-gritty time. Pumpkin Festival Flyers are for Distributing and Posting! Everywhere! According to the Great Pumpkin it is essential for each of us to: Recruit Craft Vendors Solicit Ads for program book Recruit Tag Sale Vendors Bake, make jams, relishes, pickles, and yes, chocolates Collect (& bring in) Jewelry Pumpkin Patch Food If you are out shopping and are able to provide any of the following that would be great! Ketchup, relish, napkins, small paper plates, bottled water, juice boxes and cans of soda of the following flavors: Pepsi regular and diet, root beer, orange and ginger ale. Thanks for your help! Collect Books, puzzles and games for our book sale Gather gold and silver jewelry to trade in for cash and earn $$ for DUMC. Last, but certainly first, Pray! The spare change jar is money used for miscellaneous festival items. PUMPKIN FESTIVAL Next Meetings: OCTOBER 4, 2014 Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Wednesday., Sept. 17th at 7PM. The Mission of our Pumpkin Festival: 1) to provide an opportunity for all members of all ages in our congregation to participate in a meaningful way 2) to provide community members an opportunity to visit our church, become familiar with our activities and missions, and have fun 3) to be a major fundraiser to support our activities, missions and outreach No Editing Experience Necessary! Cut and paste skills, yes. This is a basic requirement as Editor of our monthly Flame newsletter, an opportunity that will be available in October. Ms. Roig is relinquishing this role after several (on and off, mostly on) years. (25!) She has done so with help of many pastors and contributors. Jean Walker had nearly the same tenure and her expertise was invaluable. Microsoft Publisher is the program used and the second office computer is available. No editing experience required, just the desire to keep our members informed of all that we have done, all that we are doing, and our hopes and prayers for the future.
7 Homecoming Sunday is September 7 th Everyone is welcome! We re having a pancake breakfast in Fellowship Hall, starting at 9:30 am. This year we will be making Pinwheels for Peace to be displayed on International Peace Day. Come join the fun! Come make a pinwheel or two or three. We will have registration for Sunday school and a chance to meet the teachers. Also, on the 7 th, we ask that the kids bring their school backpacks to church for a special blessing during the service. What does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6-8 Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.
